    has my turbo shat itself?

whille i was out giving the 5 some beans today suddenly felt like running on 3 cylinders - checked all vac pipes & ht leads, everything ok.

I carefully drive home and when trying to accelerate the boost guage goes mental and the car hesitates.

once home i leave it running and check the engine again, and I see a bit of smoke and oil burning between exhaust manifold and turbo.

then as i see this - I also see smoke from the exhaust now, more white in colour than blue. slight play in turbo shaft now

Does this sound like the turbo is shot? what else can I do to check?

    thanks

If you got oil leaking from manifold joint i'd say its coming from engine not turbo, pull the turbo off and see if its wet in the manifold.

    Do compression test too.

bugger! not looking too good then!! I dont have a compression tester to hand but will see if I can get hold of one

thanks, I will take off the turbo & rocker cover off tomorrow and have a look

As Mark said, it's impossible for oil to travel back to the manifold if it's the turbo. That looks engine related.

js check the water and oil... see if they have mixed,,,, do a compression test too. You;ll be able to tell what needs to be done then.

Re: has my turbo shat itself?

    Found the problem!!!

removed the rocker cover to find the retaining nut on valve no.7 rocker arm was missing! it was wedged between the pushrod and the head!

had to slowly turn the crank as the pushrod wouldnt move, then the fecking nut went down underneath the pushrod as I was teasing it out and I cant see it!!!

how im I going to get it??

Re: has my turbo shat itself?

Not good matey, hopefully the nut would have got stuck in the cam follower do you have a magnetic pen or one of those halfords magnetic screwdrivers?? only thing I can think of doing is removing the push rod fully out and trying to use a magentic pen or screwdriver tip to get it out. Worst case it's prob head off to get it out

Note sure that is the cause of your oil problem though coming out of the exhaust manifold before the turbo.

    Comp test matey

Re: has my turbo shat itself?

I had to move all the nuts from top to bottom, it gave me a bit more room to do valve clearances

I will get my hands on a decent magnet from work tonight so when I get a chance tomorrow I will try and get the nut out.

is this valve an inlet??? what sort of damage could there be if that cylinder was starved of air/fuel for 10mins.......

picking up a compression tester tomorrow

no problems at all as the cylinder is still being lubricated.

I love the randomness - just goes to show there are never straight forward oh it'll be this it'll be that. Good work on spotting it.

I didnt manage to get the nut out or the pushrod channel so looks like head has to come off

Need to buy a torque wrench now, but Can someone tell me the size of socket I will need to get the head bolts off/on??

That's a fecking ****ter, ref head bolts T50 ring's a bell for the head bolts,

There must be someone local to you whom can lend you a torque wrench failing that the Halfords Pro torque wrench's are ok, I had a set until recently never had a problem but some fecker stole my toolbox from my car. So I just purchased a Snap On digital jobbie TECH3FR250.

Well, ended up having to remove the head. The head gasket looked ok to me, but in not 100% on what to look for, will post some pics later for you's to inspect

Number 4 on the head looks wet / oily? would the valve not moving properly cause this?? as you said before have oil coming out of the manifold before thr turbo.

    Could the rings be gone?

Thanks James, so is the only way to tell exactly if the rings have gone, is it either remove the piston or put it back together and do a compression rest??

Dry comp test then a wet comp test to see if compression would tell you what has happened but seeing as head is off seem's a waste put it bnack together and do a comp test on a new gasket only to take it apart again

isnt that the end which popped the pushrod off?

seems a coincidence thats its also the one with the wet cylinder....

    Yes, its the same cylinder.

I take it re-using the head gasket just for a comp test is a No..No...?

Pop some petrol down the bores and report back in the morning.

A drop of diesel is probably better, it won't wash the bore dry and will also help to loosen up any crap in the rings.

Right then, I put just enough oil in to cover the top of each piston and when I checked this morning - the same amount is still there in all 4...

Re: has my turbo shat itself?

Clearly the mis-fire was down to the pushrod not moving properly, as the headgasket never failed just forget about the rings and put it back together. Tighten the rocker arm nut properly this time

you need more then a day for all the oil to drain true the rings

Re: has my turbo shat itself?

Had another look at the fuel on the pistons today, the suspect piston is holding it well

Although one of the other pistons is nearly empty. I wasnt experiencing any smoke prior to this, so is a slight leak through the ring acceptable/common?.....
