    G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Before I start, this is my first 5 GT Turbo which ended up being turning into a bigger project than first thought

Hopefully this thread with give me the inspiration to actually crack on with the car and hear some feedback aside from "the piece of crap in the garage"

I had been driving a '96 Campus with a C1J in which was good fun but around the same time a local bloke got hold of this....

    The car and my Campus

Number of months later.... he had a a few knocks, bumps and a bit of a heavy right foot

After spending money replacing the engine, he did that to the following engine within the next few weeks... high boost and flat out driving

Decided to save this car, give it a tidy up and get it running again, so I thought lol. Went and picked it up

Got it home and hosed it down and a quick shampoo

The body had taken more of a beating than I first remembered

    A look at the interior

First move was removing the engine and its contents....

    lol

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

    Cleaned up the gearbox

Then it was time while it was at this stage to search for rust, starting with getting the interior out

    External strip down

What the side skirts were held on with!

Removed the "wheel spacers" and binned the old warped bonnet

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Bit of metal paint and some prep work, also removed the boot floor sound deadening which had seen better days, suprising how much it all weighed up when it was removed!

Next was tackling all the rust that got found

Wheeled in the campus as this got used for a donor car in the end

Got Boris on the case to cut out the rust and weld it up, really didn't get good enought pictures to show off his welding working, top bloke and did exactly what I wanted

I have had the car since January this year, and these are most of the photos of the work I have done so far, for the first few months it just sat that while I was driving the Campus until June, so it's a slow "as and when" project, but what better place to show it than RTOC..... right?

ANY feedback / comment / etc welcome!

Good to see someone putting the time into restoring that car, most people on here would of broken it for parts!

Top marks for effort, good luck with the project!

Another month has gone past, jesus its getting colder which means the pictures may slow down a little now

Anyhow I've been doing even MORE body prepping

    Killed it

I would in the ideal world like to replace this inner sill but I'm going way beyond the budget with this car as it is so cut and killed what was there

Bottom of rear window ground back and painted

The last of the boot crap....

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Next was to get the heater box out and look at why the fan wouldn't work which means..... DASH OUT

I will be taking this opportunity to swap the dash as mine had holes for switchs all over it!

Next was tackling the protection of the following:

    Boot Floor
    Main Floor
    4 x Inner Wheel Archs
    Inner and Outer Sills
    Jacking Points
    Under Floor
    Under Boot Floor

Decided to use trustworthy Stonechip over the nasty tacky underseal.

Excuse the rusty brakes / suspension etc

And some result pictures of some of the car

Only needed to do where a rubber seal was underneath the boot

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

As my roof lining was mostly water damaged from damp and discoloured I spray dyed it

Picture with the flash on (this was immediately after application so some of it looks wetter than other parts) and I'm really happy with the colour / look of it

Earlier in the thread you would of seen when I got the car it had some front end damage. Luckily it was only the front panel that needed re-alignment. It had gone inwards and upwards on the grill side of the drivers headlight

Gave my brother a ring and he popped round with the big boy winch gear Perfect machine for the job

Few hours of playing later !

Some new parts courtesy of Mike @ GTTSpares:

    Heater Matrix
    Side Skirt Clips
    Side Skirt Repair Plates
    Door Torx Bolts
    Roll Pins

Mike also sent me a door

To replace my heavily damaged and rippled one

The new door arrived with some damage (heres a pic showing it at its best) but Mike wasn't happy with this and put in a claim with the courier and got my money back as he promised and originally sent me a mint condition door top bloke

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Thanks to BriC for this front bumper which I actually only bought for the strips and the fog lights for cheap

Cracked and badly smashed both sides but the bodyshop wanted to have a play around with it before I binned it....

    Strengthened from behind

    Filled and fibreglassed

    Cap hole smoothed

Another thanks to BWilkie for these

Other two with tyres trial fitted

Working late into the night lol

    Cheeky shot of my daily

    K-Tec sidey from daveturbo

An old picture but some genuine badges....

Matty J (came off his car before he got it ) won't appreciate this but.... New OE grill and badge and smoked repeaters

    Dinked, dented and rusty bonnet

All repaired inside and out with first coat of primer

Some of the bigger parts being prepped and dusted over

Took out the last piece of the puzzle which was the windscreen seal and was very happy to see it all nice and solid in the bits I hadn't checked, phew

    thanks Matt

With the reputation the bloke gave this car, I felt I had a duty to save it and bring it up to a decent enough standard again

I would love to have the unlimited cash flow I see with some of the projects on here one day but I'm wanting to move out ASAP what with being 25 now!

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Thanks for these positive comments !

I was going to paint it white as I love white ones but maybe one day ill have a white one anyway so good to keep this one black like how it started not black / green it got painted once before in its life!

Went and seen the car yesterday, seeing it being prepped is making me tingle after all this time looking at the damage !

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Some bodywork prepping... both quarters needed repair amongst the key marks, body kit repairs etc etc etc

The previous repaint seemed to go back to metal easily enough so we were able to do a bare metal check on any potential bad areas

On with some paint, here's some of the parts!

    Then of course the shell

Now the car is finally free of rust, dents, scratches, scuffs, bumps (you name it) I guess there is a job of building it, to resemble a GT Turbo again

Got it back to the garages... (sneak snot of the misses car here)

Boot Lid and Rear glass back in

    Door and window seals laid

Passenger door on and lined up with new bolts and catch pin

    Away for the night

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Next spare day.. spent time on the electric side of things, the following did NOT work....

N/S Electric Window (Needed a new motor, fair enough)
    Clock
    Heated Rear Screen
    Heater Fan
    Handbrake Light
    Glove Box Light and switch
Dash dimmer replaced for a piece of wire
    Lights On Warning Beeper
    Some Alarm Features...
And most of these things taped or left as bare twisted wires

Anyway these have all been fixed now after finding masses of diabolically poor wiring installation behind the dash, relating to the alarm, aftermarket gauges I'm guessing and all sorts of old immobiliser left over mess!

It's so nice to say EVERYTHING now works

GTT heater box was full of debris and dodgy wiring / connections from a garage attempting a quick fix previously and failing

Used my old campus box for parts..

    New Matrix in

One complete and renewed internally heater box which now has a working fan

Ran a new aerial as the one in there didn't look great ?

New dash compared with its predecessor on its way in....

And lastly, my dear of a misses found:

    Steam Cleaner
    Autoglym Interior Shampoo
    Vanish
    Meguiars Carpet Cleaner
Autoglym Carpet scrubbing car pad thing
    A Dyson with attachments
(And a few hours work *cough*)

And created this look blooming fantastical....

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Few little unexpected gifts from the misses

Starting with new rear window fittings..

Mine were extremely perished and worn out

Another pic of the old ones..

Replaced the inner seals (originally got these in error but so glad I did as mine were missing !)

Finished doing the main interior trims with this pick and mix bag lol

Finished getting the dash in as I broke the old clip

Replaced the rear cards with phase one items (as like all phase two's the fabric was escaping the cards)

Mix and matched all my seat belts to make the best set

Build up of some of the interior

    Steering column and wheel replaced

Interior light panel with a switch that actually works now (thanks to robw for donating )

Obviously a lot more to do yet..

The steering wheel I will repaint the metal work, and the white dials will be binned, loving my ebay bargain OE gearknob, bit of wear but what can you expected for £15 delivered with gaitor, red carpet and new dash also looking goooood

On to some brief exterior updates....

New fog lamp bolts and revamped surrounds

Orange repeaters to replace the clear

Window regulator in and motor replaced and all built up

Couldn't find my glue gun to make sure the spoiler clips 100% stayed in, so...

Fitted on along with the rear bumper, lights, trims etc.. taking shape a bit now

Finally got to work with prepping my badges..

    This was with:
    Hot water
    Fairy liquid
    320 paper on a block

Will take up to 2000 grit getting them ultra smooth, then scotch pad the "RENAULT 5" for a bit of brushed effect.. the GT turbo will be red again then both of them lacquered

More to follow as it comes

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

It's been a while ... So just keeping this thread alive ...

Sadly, I had to leave the epic garages which proved a real nightmare finding another!... Impossible for my budget

Anyhow, managed to find a space, hardly equal but meh.. It's had a new door and roof, so its dry, and after a few security measures (not pictured), now extra secure

The biggest part of all was sorting everything out... being strict on what I needed and what was ready to dump (hence my cheap for sale thread lol)

Great to see the 5 in sunlight!

Loading up and ready to go !

    In it's new resting place

... oh and sneaky shot of my new daily

No work gone into the 5 since, this has thrown me back...

I have also been keen to getting on that property ladder, preferably without people pulling out last minute

So... cleaned up some spare foot pedals I had and my wiper motor / linkage so I could get that fitted again

Some new orange repeaters (good condition clears available for anyone interested)

Started the job I've been putting off ....

Check earlier in the thread (degreaser)... Over 12 months ago

Came up really well underneath all that grime !

After this, found the 5 difficult to push with some bad noises...

    Resulting in...

Manged to move it on the jack in the end Whoops... Planning to replace all the drivetrain anyway but at a later stage... Guess thats now

Treated it to a Valeo Greenbox Clutch (thanks to Al) and also gave the garage some lightage !

Few final pics of the 5 because I can't help myself

Got to say I'm honoured someone has dragged this up

Well in a nut shell... not really ! The following reasons (excuses) are why:

    1: Bought my first house
2: House needs renovation throughout !
    3: Still doing this
4: The 'new' garage I moved to is absolutely useless
5: Bought my SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.8 20v Turbo back and ended up repainting it, new suspension, wheels, parts galore, and much more

BUT... I have however been buying a few bits of the 5, new parcel shelf, new steering wheel and boss, new rear discs, some manifold studs and suspension bolts and the odd bits I have forgot but photographed

As you can imagine the house and moving into my first castle of freedom has taken a little time..

But I do go and check all is well weekly and give it pat on the roof

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

I now understand how projects on here get lost, dated, or just left for years! As per previous post, I've been rather busy the pat 12-18 months with a new job also.

However, I don't want this thread to complete fizzle out

So time to whore a load of photos again to get them off my camera, although I can't say that it's much of an update I'm afraid folks

Finally got myself a drivers door, luckily already delocked, and hinges to be able to adjust it for perfect fitment

Cleaned up a few bits and pieces, wire brushed the block back, gave it a good thick one coat (due another coat soon)

Sorted a few bodykit bits out and repaired the side skirt mountings, side skirt seals, and a replacement grill tab to repair mine

    New washer fluid hose

Audi S3 got replaced with a budget Civic VTi

Then got my old SEAT Ibiza Cupra back

Primered and flattened back the badge and few little interior bits I needed. Also new steering wheel, stealth shelf, and bargain Chinese fog lamps

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

Manifold studs, locking nuts and top mount bolts

    POR'd battery tray

Few randoms before I removed the Williams wheels for refurbishment

Have got fair few other little goodies along the way, but they aren't pictured yet until they are cleaned up etc, I have only just managed to clear out the garage to even get to the car recently so it's a case of actually bringing the bits to it and making a start again given I don't keep anything there anymore

Watch this space .... Meh I said that last time

Re: G738 YLU - My Black 5 GT Turbo 1989

An update already Doing the thread made me want to pull my finger out a little..

Got hold of these from a neighbour for a pretty bargain

Visited my usual tyre fitter friend, who kindly balanced them, chucked in some bike valves, and filled with some Nitrogen for me

    Ready to roll

Thanks to robw for fixing up my snapped grill tab for me

Collected up all the seals and door rubbers I'll be needing soon for the drivers door etc

Finally took a trip to the 5 to pick up:

    Front Bumper
    Drivers Door
    Side Skirts
    Roof Rail End Caps

    which still aren't re-painted

Having these bits prepped and painted up in due course to finish off building the shell up and getting the kit on

Before that I want some OE replica decals off here (HINT HINT Black 5 owners, get involved in the group buy please )
