1st Oct - Saturday Night Special at Santa Pod

Who's up for one last blast at the Pod before the weather gets too bad and Pod close's, Sat Night Special has always seemed to be a good day and if the weather is right some very good times can be had (Stuart Clark set previous record time at this event).

I'm going to go along in eother car and have one last crack before the winter, does anyone else fancy coming along too and make a nice gathering out of it.

Depending on weather could all camp over and enjoy the night antics as usual, camping and evening entertainment is catered for by Pod so shouldn't get too bored.

Lets get list going and if needs be may see if pod could set an area aside for us if numbers are fair size

My dyno session last week went to crap so I don't know if it's worth me going. If I do I'll likely spend all day messing with boost controllers and get no good runs in. Maybe if the weathers good it'll be worth a try

Boost control was being a pain. Dyno operator needed to call it a day, and my wallet couldn't sustain much more, so gave up trying to resolve it. I'll have to go back to the big wastegate springs and try and set the boost at the track, but then 1st gear is going to be problematic again unless I can work some magic in the ECU. Also new driveshafts and hubs still havn't turned up so I'll be running crappy CV's still. Forecast looks good so we should be on for a goodun in that respect

Hey if you think Glenns 100 shot is a lot, there's a guy in York that's putting 600hp in to his V8 !!

haha ye it does get expensive and quick.. Well hopefully you'll be able to sort it at the track, would be nice to see a 9

Mmmm I'm not sure about 100 shot, I think he said he was going up 5 or 10hp steps after every run (when he was close to the 10) he must of been close to 150 then lol.. Yeah them V8's run serious amounts through them, mind is it a hoppy kit? if it is, it would prob be half that if it was a NOS system haha..

150hp, no where near ! It ran 150hp last year on odd occasion. This year with the changes and the new cam it's gone quicker with 100 shot. the 128mph's were at 100 shot. It will do about 126mph with 75shot which he often runs at york. He wants to try a little bigger this time, but the tune is at the limit so we'll need to make some changes before he can.

I was only assuming by what he was saying last time we was up there.. I must have about the same power then as mine with the 60 shot was running 126 traps So when I step it up this weekend I should hopefully see some more MPH.. just need to get of the line better, which is prob down to tyre size now..

Scoff what's the problem with boost control? Have you downsized wastegate springs and now you can't get high boost? Do you use a solenoid to control boost I forget

Yes rob, only 10psi springs so that I might be able to control 1st gear.

Yes, MAC valve doing the control via the ECU so that I can have dynamic boost. Basically, it goes t1ts up at about 2 bar, its just too lairy. At one point 1% was making 0.5bar difference !! I nearly shut his dyno down with 2500lb/ft at the hubs when it overboosted to 3bar! The torque curve was close to verticle, it was quite something !!

So now I will return to the 1.2bar springs and I will have to try and set it on the track.

The changes we discussed Rob have helped a little, I managed another 15hp at the same boost and settings (once I'd corrected the fuel map). It responds very well to small boost increases now, which I wasn't expecting, so the turbo has a little more to give

Re: 1st Oct - Saturday Night Special at Santa Pod

Have you heard of a 4 port MAC valve?
There was a thread about it on HT not long ago, people were running very light springs yet still managing to make 40psi +, and with good control. Seems like the way to go without resorting to CO2

I've seen 6 port ones, essentially just 2x 3 port ones in one body. How are the 4 port configured ? I thought the 3 port should have done it. I just routed the normally closed port to the top of the wastegates and the normally open port to the bottom. There's a slight bleed in each output to allow for some flow. At 0% you get wastegate pressure and at 100% you get no pressure to the bottom but full pressure to the top, IE totally shut. That works to a point, but all the adjustment was in the 88-92% region and it was impossible to make it any less sensitive without loosing the ability to hold enough boost at the top.

Do you have a link to a post about these 4 port MACs ?

At 0% you get wastegate pressure and at 100% you get no pressure to the bottom but full pressure to the top, IE totally shut. That works to a point, but all the adjustment was in the 88-92% region and it was impossible to make it any less sensitive without loosing the ability to hold enough boost at the top.

Do you have a link to a post about these 4 port MACs ?
Here ya go, sound quite good for $36, massive amount of adjustment boost wise

    Yeah that's the thread John

I was going to order one of those ports myself soon as were struggling to get much boost from the 8psi springs

    Jon, rob, thanks.

I don't agree with some of their pneumatics though. That "2 port" diagram won't wont because there's no bleeds. You'd get horrible boost creep when applying low duty to the top port, because eventually the line and volume above the diaphram will equalize in pressure. There always has to be some flow in the system. I run that 2 port method but with a small bleed in each pipe after the solenoid. I think I probably just have a lot more back pressure with the little turbo compared to some of those guys who are getting 4x spring pressure.

I'd like to try one of those 4 port MACs though. Or maybe just 2x 3 ports would work better if I could map each of them seperately. It's all too much fukcing about so I'll stick to plan A !

Yes OK sort of day for most people steve. Weather was nice, too hot for racing in the morning and by the time it cooled down the que's grew to "usc" spec and there was 2hrs between runs.

Robbie turbo ted did well, 128mph and an 11.2 blowing the boost hose off in 4th so plenty of potential there still. Dave reed going ok but ran in to some problems, Glenn caught an annoying misfire and didn't have any replacement plugs to try and my diff locked itself up (or the drive flange has welded itself in to the diff again). I ran it anyway taking it easy in the morning to get some data from it and set the boost. I gave it large on a couple runs once it had cooled down, wouldn't shift in to 2nd on the first run and 2nd run shifted fine, great 60' but the o/s cv exploded as power came on in 2nd. Would have been a nice run I think. This time just shattered the 3 legged spider bit. Managed 148.7mph trap today so that made the day worthwhile and it means the car should go fine at flame and thunder at the end of the month once I've got the new shafts and hubs in.

Good to catch up with the regulars and meet some new faces.

    Chris

Sounds like I missed a good day but I had to work in the morning in the end
Shame about the various problems for the regulars but hopefully you got some info from the day in some form or another to help for next time

Re: 1st Oct - Saturday Night Special at Santa Pod

Rob, yeah that was nice to see, but I can't say it's because of the injectors! I've spent something like 5hrs on the dyno with those injectors now, not seen even the smallest back to back gain compared with the old deka's. It was the other recent alterations that gave it that extra bit. It had really cooled down by the time I was ready for the last run, that might have helped a bit more
