Re: The story of your first r5

About 10 years ago a work mate rocked up in a R5 GTT. In a faded red, one lady owner from new. I fell in love with it, but couldn't afford one at the time (I'd bought a brand new 106 Quiksilver)

So I found a non runner in Sunbury, a phase 2 in black. I gave 300 notes & the project began. The engine was completely stripped down & rebuilt with no expense spared (cam, low comp pistons/liners ported head/bigger turbo) Full set Of samco hoses (old ones were buggered).

Anyway after the engine build, the sills were removed and replaced, then a set of alloys.

Anyhow to cut a long story short, the little 5 was given a
New life, passed the mot first time. I later sold it to a young chap from fleet. Seemed
Enthusiastic but i had a horrible feeling I'd never see it again.
And I haven't seen it since. :/ Done a reg check and it no longer exists

Onwards and upwards though. My Tungy is now my pride and joy and is almost complete. Ready for some rtoc meets next summer.

    I was given a 5 campus. .....

Leaky head so sealed for 50quid. No radio so had a battery operated one of the paseenger seat. Squeaky blowers. Over heated a number of times.

Max power around 98/99 I came across a gtturbo article and fell in love. Walking home from work one day some 5 years later I found a phase 1 parked up. Paid a 200 deposit and spent the next 3 months staring at it while I paid in instalments. I remember driving it home shaking in excitement! Had 4 now and shortly going to add a 5th

Re: The story of your first r5

My 1st was a phase 1 that had been painted purple & had 'Ribena turbo' in silver letters on the back. Managed to pop a liner on the way home from a nightclub @ 2am, then it sat in the carpark & got towed after buying my 2nd

2nd was a tungy, managed to rear end someone that decided to stop rather suddenly & unexpectedly so that finished that.

3rd was silver & got the GT5 ltd edition kit & spectra flash paint back when big kits & wheels were in.. sold to a member on here

4th was very briefly owning a white doggy thing, sold it to a mate, he blew it up & I bought it back & broke it.

5th was my old imperial blue one that Logg has now, was supposed to be for the missus but I fell in love with it.. She ended up with the CGB pink one ...

6th... well I hope to own another next year... if I can swing it..

Re: The story of your first r5

Crikey Steve I remember the Ribenna one when it was black Phase 1 I drove it back for your brother Gary when he purchased it. Blew up on the way home the kiddie we got it off had piped it all up wrong.

My first 5 was back in 1998 just as I past my test (first time)went out to by an FRST came back with a std Tungy phase 2 GTT - F901 NBY had bleed valve and remus back box. New nothing about car's back then at all 2nd day of ownership I destroyed the clutch (no signs of slippage before hand)so paid for a new one to be fitted by local clutch place just under £500.00. then I stumbled across GTTuning so ordered some bling bit's and a stage 1 hybrid. Well 3rd week of ownership headgasket went car was running 1 bar but I never checked fueling so of car went to GTTuning for head gasket and had some head work done also.

3 weeks later car put's a piston through side of block again car back to GTTuning i got the car back 6 weeks later all running fine. But was getting oil and coolant mixing constantly car went back to GTTuning and they convinced me to buy another engine from them so i did. Still had the same problem oil and coolant mixing could not work out for the life of me what was going on. Anyway big end's failed car back to GTTuning to be sorted. Once back I sold the car as at this point was pretty strapped for cash being a student, I beleive the car was broken for parts as the jacking points had gone nothing major new owner couldn't be arsed to fix and new owner abused the car believe new owner replaced h/g with sealant only. Anyway I believe the rad ended up in Steve's tungy 5 and he then had same symptoms I was getting oil and coolant mixing turned out to be rad oil cooler split. Gttuning could never identify the problem. Since these day's I have worked on my own 5's and car's had a fair few GTT's since then.

Forgot to add after selling the 5 (after 1 year ownership) I bought a mk1 UNO turbo had that 2 weeks and sold it then bought a red xr2 mk2 turbo technics had that form about 2 years actually liked it got another tungy 5 gtt at the same time G48WDP

Re: The story of your first r5

This thread is gona make a great read lol

    2006 I was 19 and I always had loved 5 turbo's!
One came up on auto trader in electric blue. It was ratty but looked solid and although I knew NOTHING about cars let alone a 5 I bought it on its performance alone :-) it had loads of work done at bbtuning originally so when the head gasket went after 3 weeks of boosting (side story of actually having motion sickness the first few drives of it lol) it went back to bb.

When it was all sorted I learned about the rtoc and joined. By this time I was the envy of all my mates and at one point in 2007 there was 13 gt turbos buzzing round here locally. I took her to rockingham for the rtoc/fcs national day armed with track time. 5 laps in @ 16psi of boost and wallop!!!! Huge plooms of white smoke and a drop in performance, iinstantly thought the turbo was goosed :-/ When I rolled into the pits all was revealed, ENGINE FIRE with nothing to put it out with!!! Me and my pal (an old, quite well known rtoc member Alex johnston) was frantically blowing at it lol. Luckily some stranger ran down with a fire exstigisher and put it out. It turned out that that turbo oil drain had split and a stanly knife sorted that problem. A little clean up and top up and I was back out big only at 10psi which seemed poor but I was scared of it breaking again as I needed it to get home lol.

Anyways I made it through the day and loved it. I have many more funny stories with this car (E820 HAD) and othet 5's but I would be here all day :-)

Re: The story of your first r5

Bought my first 5 way back in 1990, an 88 Eplate in electric blue Stuck a Devil exhaust on it & a bleed valve & drove it like I stole it.lol, 6mnths later I totaled it big time & was lucky to walk away without a scratch. Went to a 205 1.9 for a little while & then back to 5's. I've had at least 1 eversince. Joined the R5GTTOC in 1995 & been a member since then. The only lapse in my membership was when the club died, but I rejoined as soon as RTOC was launched. Must be a gluton for punishment.

Got my phase 1 last year. Payed strong money for what I got. It breaks all the time, drinks fuel. Scares my missis. Still love it, rebuilding the little turd at the moment with some new tricks. Watch this space...
