Yeah tried ringing Mike, but he`s away till next week, I`ve yet to buy anything off him, but there`s always good comments about him so I might give him a try?

CGB (tricky one) I`ve had very mixed results with them, some stuff ok, some other stuff over priced crap and expensive postage!

Any help on genuine mint/new coolant hoses ???

Also I need to source a exhaust system in good condition, can`t seem to get a sensible priced new one so if any one has a stainless used one and its not to big then please PM me.......

One of the lads on the Fb site has just bought a set. The ones he got are awful, bleed valves that were solid and runs that were too short. Maybe not all like that but why take the chance when you have put in so much time and effort to get everything perfect.

on your coolant hoses i know your going for oe but would you consider silicone hosing?

with my efi conversion i really wanted it to look oe so i just bought black silicone hoses, same oe look and the performance of a silicone hose?

sfs silicone hoses do them in black

I`ve been working on cooling system this week and a few more pipes arrived from France, I think the long one is a air pipe (not sure) when I start refitting them i`ll post all the genuine part numbers I managed to get hold of!!

PS I have both of the little carb coolant hoses now, so will post a list of genuine hose numbers when I have all the ones I can get from Renualt.

So many new items looks great.

My local Renault has a few original hoses still in stock, purchased a lot of his old stock but when it was around £50 a hose for some reason I didn't buy it.

If I can`t replace it with new, I replate everything or blast it then re-paint, every screw/nut and washer is new, every hose clip is new, I spend hours washing parts and I`ve been doing this on my drive with no garage for over 4 years!! (crazy hey)

I just love the little thing, you never know one day it might move!

Once again, thank you for all the nice comments about my car. Luke (pigsnake) came over and showed me what a finished one should look like! Lovely car and lovely guy.
I would like to thank him for his time and patience on Saturday.

Put a few more parts on the car, but need a question answering about the oil cooler pipes, I`ve bolted them up to the new radiator but they still move around and are they supposed to be like that??

they should have side to side play in the square part of the fitting , ,as long the fitting is tight in the rad you will not get any oil any where

I've been looking at pics of my bay to see if I can answer (I can't) and though not perfect I thought my bay was quite clean but the pictures above are a different level, must get my zinc finishes redone.

Thoroughly entertaning read, and an awesome car. Surely the cleanest in the club?

If I was in any doubt as to what colour to paint mine, I'm certainly not now. Glacier brings out the best in the 5. OE in white=perfect.

Totally agree,I've always thought glacier is the best colour, and I've never owned one
The question is are you going to use it when it's finished or is it going to be a garage queen?

Due to job loss this car is now for sale or I will mothball it for 12 months and start again, please see classifieds if interested or pm me, you can look through this thread to see the level of restoration.

Deeply saddened by this but if someone wants a concourse one which needs a little finishing off them please make an offer.

Car can be delivered to mainland UK for 25p per mile..

VALE mate that is not good at all. I've been following your post from day one and was my kick up the arse to go and get another 5.

Surely you can just stop spending money on the 5 and put it away like you say.

Like Simon says, put it away, put things together without spending money on it, and hopefully find a job in the meantime, or push comes, sell off some of the new items to bring in the money but keep the car as a whole, as amount of time and effort gone into this car will be such a waste to give it away.

Well technically yes, as people who do this kind of restore will never be happy with the finish. I am forever searching for new original parts to put on my car.

I considered buying this car! But didn't for 2 reasons:

    1. Its just so be beautiful i'd be scared to drive/leave/use it
    2. I lost my heart to a scabby Raider 10+ years ago now

Congratulations to the new owner! And comiserations to Vale

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Spent an hour looking over the 5 today with mixed feelings. There is so much left and parts to source and things that I thought were completed still need sorting. Connected a battery to find windows don't work, central locking doesn't work, main beam doesn't work, interior lights don't work, Heater fan very noisy, some bodywork needs finishing, Front suspension sit's very high and the camber doesn't look right ( new shocks springs and lower arms from cgb fitted) all on top of the other work that still needs to be finished. (interior, door locks, carb, turbo, intercooler, pipework, exhaust, fuel pipes etc) On a + note i'm very happy with the body work and underside it's very good. when it's done I know I will love it as i'm loving it already. Have sent turbo away for re ferb, found a brand new carb and intercooler so hopefully will have all the parts now to get it running.

Just 1 question where the clutch cable comes out of the bulk head should it run in front of the steering coloum then along the sub frame or behind it and along the subframe?

Do it properly mate. It runs in brackets and clips behind the rack on the subframe then along the passenger side chassis leg.

I hope you will continue the level of effort that Vale has put in. Attention to detail is awesome!

    Re: Tungy- glacier white restoration

Well spent the day working on the 5 today to take it that next step and try and get it running but every step forward I made I took 3 back
First job fit servo hose 5 min job but found servo upside down so had to remove master cylinder and refit servo.
Fitted coolant hoses, fitted turbo and down pipe with all brackets, Fitted carb, Replaced cracked fuel pipes and fitted clips on all other pipes, Fitted plug leads etc all ok.
Now lets see if it starts. It didn't.
Fuel pump not running so checked feed n earth to pump both ok so pump us. Fitted another pump now I have fuel but still wont start.
    Checked for spark -ok
    Checked compressions -ok
Checked valve clearences found all way out so adjusted still wont start.
Checked timing found distributor drive 180 degrees out so put right
    WOO HOO SHE STARTS.
Checked oil feed to turbo found no oil getting to turbo. Fitted another oil feed pipe all ok now. Needs new 1 way valve in pipe
Topped up with coolant found water pump leaking
Also oil pressure gauge is reading very low and oil light flickers when idling so need to test oil pressure. That was my day today.
Next step test oil pressure, Replace water pump, fit new 1 way valve in oil pipe. Get running right

    Re: Tungy- glacier white restoration

What should the oil pressure be?
If it's low what could cause it as it's had a engine rebuild. Would it just be an oil pump?. How difficult is it to replace oil pump? What drives the pump?

Ref : oil pressure, if you talking about the standard dash gauge? I wouldn't worry about it, if any, your lucky it works atall. Best way to check is to plum in a after market mechanical one in the turbo oil feed line. Quick and simple.

As above, if there is an issue with the pressure, then the pump would be the first place to look, new internals usually sort out the problem, sometimes the pump housings can be the issue. Complete oil pumps are either daft money or no longer available, stay away from the cheap new ones on e-bay.

They make the same pressure as a gtt pump but can't provide enough flow
