Really hope it isn't, but they do crack liners almost as often as R5's do! Nice engines but fragile blocks.
I know it's old hat but I remember the trouble people had getting road cars into the tens back in the day (80's?) Twin Turbo V8's not making it! Nic Mann's Minor being a very notable exception. How times have changed, a hatchback with an ebay blower cracking it... Great stuff, well done. Until you've been in a car like that you just don't realise how quick it is.

Re: The New Backyard D16 Project

    yeah yeah

hes using a tubular front end, and methanol though, not really our class tbh.

however funnily enough, the street-class record also fell this weekend

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0u93xZXuUw

now this car is street legal, stock chassis etc, normal fuel, B series, not a D, but
very impressive, 1.52 60ft, 170mph best trap. that the fastest fwd car EVER without a tube chassis or wheelie bars. (i.e street car)

vitaras, custom pistons, very expensive, very exclusive. I'll sort you a set out for a never to be repeated £850 (keep it to yourself)

i knew about the use of the vitara pistons, i wondered whether it related to any other cross over parts. esp as backyard hadnt put it on the end of their entry on that list.

Re: The New Backyard D16 Project

we still not going for after-market sleeves, were rebuilding it as was, it was simply too much pcp that cracked our sleeve, due to too much ignition timing for the boost we were running (30psi!), it was simply making too much torque for the cyclinder, its the only way the motor would make any power due to it not carrying torque high up in the rev range (stock cam), the car was making somewhere in the region of 450lb ft when the sleeve failed, too much for the hp it made, but thats the stock cam for you.

Re: The New Backyard D16 Project

Well thought id post up where we up to with the car and we havnt got very far. Infact we havnt touched it since the last event when we had a fail back in july. We did pull the head off right after the event to find that we did do a sleeve in which destroyed the head and piston and also the blades on our new (kung fui) GT35r.. We havnt stripped the car any further to see if we have damaged a rod.

So basicly we left the car as that but we was still pleased at what results we managed to pull so far with the stock cam and head and TB etc even tho we screwed the engine, we did know that we was pushing the map so much on the day, but if we didnt push it we wouldnt have seen a 10....

In the meantime we have still been much involved on other forums and also with the HKS lot, and hopefully as some of you know we will be in next years HKS drap series and should be able to confirm after this years final once we have a meet with Rick C from pod about the weight discussion..

Now the little progress we have, we have a new car (not just an engine) all for £250, we havnt collected it yet but we hoping the shell is cleaner than our sliver one and also its white so maybe a better colour imo, we are going to weight our old car in to gain some cash back in the pot for other spares needed...

Few pics in here of the damage we did back in july:

You havnt modified the head or cam yet though, so I'd imagine there would be some gain there.

But like you said to me at Mallory, once you start spending money, where does it stop lol

Re: The New Backyard D16 Project

Im not sure of what HP tbh i guess around 450+, as for the box we ok with stock box aslong as we can keep the torque lower or at 350lb and we ok, much over 370 and we will start to break the tranny.. we are slightly over that at the mo with the old spec and map and turbo but we have a good idea of how we want it to be. We just need the cam so we can rev it some more and also stop peak power dropping of so soon as you know rev x torq = hp..9k rpm would be nice.. have to see yet.. our 60fts are going to get harder to achive in the future unless we start to go bigger on the drags but then we back to straining box and id like to keep the 23" for as long as we can before we go 24.5".. also if we go that big we will need to rev it or look into box ratio as we will be close to dropping of peak power over the trap.... i think we cross at 7k at mo in 4th, cant remember would have to look a logs to be exact.

    UPDATE SEPT 19th

Collected our new ride the other night and it seems a steel for £250 runs brill, drives great.. had to fix a small coolant leak and exhaust leak today, also gave the old girl a wash ready for its MOT.

Finished stripping the the silver car this morning but didnt make it in time for the death row weight in so took a few pics of its new ride height instead

Let the new build begin........ target 10.5@137mph at full outlaw weight...

Thought id post up a small update of what we have been doing.... yes we just been scratching about really and havnt done much.. The car still is stock and just rolls around as it is...

We have come to a decision to move away from the d16 engine sometime next year after spending some time looking at cams and what to do.. So looks like after some research and thinking we going to invest in a B16....

Why the b16 you say and not the b18??? Well simply its cheaper but also we want to drop to the lower stroke (lower than our D) and with the size of the bores of the B block we still could bore out to 1.7-1.8 if we feel like it intime.. With some decent internal work we should be capable to rev to 12,000 rpm with no big dramas and also with the wider ranges of boxs and ratios that fit the B it all helps us to build a faster drag car..

As for the first few rounds of 2010 we will be sticking with the D pretty much as it was this year but will be swaping over from pump gas to Q16 fuel to gain mapping experiance of a such fuel for when we make way for the B. The car wont break any records and will go slower with the extra weight which is going to be added to meet the Regs.

The car is also booked in with Hauser racing for a rull 9.99ET spec cage to be fitted. I was going to tackle this myself but i was worried about the cage not passing scrut etc and the chassis stamp so managed to sort a deal with Hauser racing

Finaly our new graphics for the car. Well we started a small competition on another forum to design a new logo graphic for our car for a small prize after some bad and good attempts by many peeeps we have set on this design and will be made up soon with matching shirts..

Well thats us so far roll on 2010, the year of the 10s.......

    I want one

Nice one Rob, I suppose the D16 cams are harder to come by for the power you want eh.... is the stroke on the B that much better then ?

    cam, singular

well theres a few options for the D16z6 motor r.e cam choice, some seem to give good results, but at the end of day, its still gonna struggle to go much over 140mph,
and will take loadsss of boost and timing to do it, which will mean high torque, and probably lots of breakages.

now the B16`s are 13mm shorter stroke, which is lot, the b16 is about the shortest stroke car engine around, the geomatry is closer to a bike engine really, which means more revs, less torque, more HP. which should mean less breakages for 1, and less traction problems to overcome which may mean we can stick with the small 23" tyre for longer. also with 2 cams we have more scope for adjustment with the motor (overlap etc), and the B16`s go as fast and faster than the D16`s at half the boost! its just a much more efficent motor, we always knew it was the better motor, but wanted to try the D for the cheapness, and love of the underdog
but if we want to be anywhere near winning the championship next year, we need to be aiming high, and quite simply i dont think the D has the potential to take the win, the B certainly has, though it still wont be a walk in the park chasing guy chamberlin`s 150mph type R

These b16 series motors you talk of are they of all aluminium construction with liners or just an iron block? What about gearboxes? Are these strong in o.e spec

yeah all alloy block, with pressed in liners/sleeves, not wet fit like a gtt.

gearboxes very very strong, same as the D series, few guys in the states over 160mph traps on stock gearbox! thats well north of 800hp!

    Jan 8th 2010

So few peeps have asked how the car is doing.. Well i thought id take some pics tonight to show what stage we at. Our first event is mid march so i think its going to a busy couple of months to get this completed, its off for its cage next week and im unable to get down to collect the car till feb. We yet to refit all the interior, carpets, well front section, dash and get all the leccys back working to meet rules. Yet to build the topend of the engine, port mani for new TB, rebuild head etc. Our new cam has only just been made for the D motor and sat somewhere in USA. I couldnt help but get a cam sorted even tho we plan to go B motor in time... Other jobs that will need doing is fitting and installing the engine, cooler, pipe run, fuel system, engine breather system yet to modifi (we even larger on P2W and gaps). Paint work, graphics, and full dyno sessions from scratch, ( Ive lost every single bit of data and pod runs etc due to laptop fail)..

I'm only asking this as i've only realised the potential myself recently. Have you looked into Holset turbo's?

What are the advantages? I've been seeing and hearing more and more about these. Holset have been around for ever!

They are cheaper, have been shown to work well with low displacement engines and apparently have advanced compressor wheel design.

I'd buy one purely because they are so cheap!
