    car failed mot today :(

Well heres what my carf failed on today..

    1.Nearside headlamp aim too high.

    2.Offside headlamp aim too high.

    3.Need new rear tyre.

    4.Need two new rear calipers

5.Need two new rear pads and discs

    6.Need hand brake cable.

Also they said that there was alot off oil leaking from underneath the car i said it was prob the sum as it has the wrong sealant on it and he also said that the hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold was leaking....so he said the total price to fix it was £600 inc labour.

so made a phone call to cgb they said they will give me all the parts for the mot apart from the tyre for £171 inc free postage and also chuck in the hose for the turbo to inlet for free

Ano mate i though the guy was taking the piss when i called.plus he wanted £180 for labour.i would rather just save my self the money and do it myself.dont really want to take it back there but if i dont i will have to fork out for another mot.

aye but theres a lot of con artists in the motor trade tho ..only the good mechanics quote respectable prices, £600 for a set of rear calipers,a hose and new discs and pads all round is a bit much IMO

Respect were it's due. but that seems pretty expensive.

Colin dont think you would be charging £600 for that list of fix's, i would pay someone that if i knew they were the top mechanics and it needed only the best. and people like your self that care for attention to detail.

I would be able to do that work my self in back street, In about 6 hours, 4 hours in a garage. That works out at £92.50 per hour £370 saved if you can do your self

open end book . new calipers or recon .
do we know all the details . in a word no we dont
are the pipes rusted in does it need new pipes

dont forget these cars are 20 years old now and are troubles to work on .
you start a job wich should be simple and easy. only to find siezed nuts and bolts or somone before has put it together incorectly and you gotta sort it out

i cant tell you how many jobs ive done just sorting out things to get it right so that it goes back to the customer in a fation that is safe and the best i can do in there budjet

There is a lot of con artists in EVERY business.......Politicians are a good example.

Calipers are the best part of £100 each new x 2 plus 1 hour labour.
The discs are roughly the same as the above.....
Bleed the brake system PROPERLY £10 in fluid plus 1/2 hour labour.
A tyre fitted and balanced? God knows....
    Adjust headlamps.....seconds to do.
Were they quoting to fix oil leak as well? If so, thats steam clean off the local area and fix the leak....

Soon mounts up if you break it down doesn't it?

The good thing about doing it yourself is you can spread the cost.....I don't trust second hand brake parts if you go that route.....

The question is do the rear calipers even need changing? 90% of the time the pistons are seized resulting in poor efficiency. The only time i would change is if the mech has failed for handbrake or bleed nipple has snapped.

Free up & new pads/discs will probably sort it! The garage has probably seen pound signs when a gtt came in

its not a bad price, working on these old cars is a real pain in the a55, old corroded bits that break and you have to fix it before you can get back to the job you started. i hate working on these cars unless im chucking money and new parts in..

nope that was not including fixing the oil leak.tbh i got a shock when he said he would have to take the engine apart to fine out were its leaking from and then said i would be better off with another engine.

No i agree as some garages would prob be cheaper but cant really be bother going from garage to garage but must say the best thing i got from the mot was the things that need done.so at least i can fix them and the get it back in before my two weeks is up then its back on the road for some more showing off .also wanted to ask would it pass with the sidey on or am i best just keeping it off untill its went through the mot

The bushes can wear resulting in uneven pad wear too.
