As far as I know they are the same, as I had a knackered caliper on my clio and Jon @ Torsion used a caliper off my donor 5 when they did the conversion Maybe the carrier is different or something like that

The 16v front calipers are different from the gt's standard ones the rear are the same.I have them as an upgrade on my 5 and the standard disk size is 262.Unless the standards in the UK vary from the rest of Europe.

standard clio 16v fronts are 259mm

r5 gtt and clio rsi are the same fronts (238mm)

the calipers are the same i believe, the carriers are different on 16v

New std discs, ferodo ds2500 or mintex 1144 pads imo, or get a set of the motorfactor pads carcrash has, they stop really well!

lucas/trw. they come in a red box. i drove to the track didnt bed them in and ragged them hard all day 150 plus laps and there is still lots of meat on them and i got no fade, but mallory is a fairly mild track so they may not be so good on cadwell for instance where heavyer braking is required. but for the price who cares .

most people will reccomend ds2500 im hoping to try some so i can compare budget to extreme.

Imho, drilled discs weaken the overall structure & rigidity of the disc. I personally wouldn't ever run those type of discs, not even on a relatively lightweight car like the gtt.

Brembo Max discs & Pagid pads worked v well on my old raider when it went on track. I'd imagine the 2500 pads would've been more of an improvement over that.

mart i have heard many people mention that drilled discs are weak on many cars and forums. have you ever seen or heard of a set crack or even break?

In fairness, no I haven't, but common logic (well, to me anyway) dictates that if you drill holes a-plenty to a given object, it's overall mass strength is then gonna be weakened somewhat.

i agree in theory they should be weaker and i worried about mine cracking too. i have heard lots of times of risk of drilled discs cracking but im still yet to see some too but tbh i havnt put any research into it. a google search is required.

If you're going for the 2500's, Tweeks or Rally Design would be a good bet.

I have only ever had a rear set crack which were drilled. that was only due to severe over heating of it as the caliper was constantly stuck on.

I've seen some front drilled discs crack quite bad on a Vauxhall Vectra 180 jobbies i think it was! The bloke couldnt understand why the car failed the MOT as he had put brand new pads on them!

never needed anything better than standard renault discs.....more than up to the job...

pads...I have used mintex 1144 fast road pads for ages now......brilliant in my opinion......
have some DS2500 to try once thses are done....

if your cooking standard discs with a quality pad then somethings wrong IMO....like your pressing the wrong pedal.

Cup race cars used them for 5 or 6 practice, qualifying and races.....can't fault that

    Re: r5gtt front brakes ?

I've heard people say that Brembo standard sized discs and standard pads work very well.

I think I'll be going back to standard sized discs now that I have the braided lines on the front. There seems now too much braking at the front even with the rear compensator jammed full on and the overall stopping power is a bit less. Maybe the rear callipers are a bit sticking though.

The bigger front discs certainly give a lighter pedal, which is good. If we could fit larger rear discs that would be better for the brake balance.

I wonder is there is a different level of abrasiveness between different manufacturers discs.

Isnt that part of the idea of having drilled/grooved discs Ian? Better friction between pad and disc?

you wonder right, they do have different levels of abrasiveness, alot more to it than just a peice of metal, as far as i know brembo max disks have a higher carbon content than stock disks, i dnt know how it works but it makes them bite better

not quite......drilled holes and grooves are to remove surface heat and in extreme cases gases due to the high heat build up...

the friction comes from keeping the pad within its heat tolerance and the quality of the material used in the disc

    Re: r5gtt front brakes ?

depends on how much your on track, weight of the car, BUDGET etc....

do you want brakes that put you through the screen when dry but are too scary to use in the wet..???? and take 3 mile to warm up
    a good track/road compromise
    just track etc.....

need to know what your expecting from the brakes before we can make judgements...

also....standard brakes and track pads are a fantastic set up and hugely cheap compared to stuff only a little better....
    just a thought

It was a general question to be honest, i am happy with my 4pots! For instance the car was to be used on track would you be looking for more of any type of material in the pads or discs? What materials should you be looking for in brakes, i know carbon is a big thing, but is their anything else?
