breather system / sucking air through catch tank

    Hello all ,

Ive just fitted a mocal oil catch tank , what ive done is remove the pipe that goes to the telephone hose and block the hole then put a pipe from the T-piece on top of the manifold to the catch tank , is that ok ?? or should i be doing it some other way.

I started the car up left it on tick over and took the cap off the catch tank put my hand on top and its sucking in really strong through the cap ???
shouldnt this be going the other way or surely it will never collect oil ? .

any ideas , thanks - Dan

On the t piece one way goes to the top of the oil seperator pot one way goes to the carb breather (base of the carb) and the other to the oil catch tank (used to go to air filter hose). is that ok , its sucking air in through thecatch tank .

    sorry for all the questions

    .
is it supposed to suck air into the catch tank through the cap ?. i just cant see how that will catch oil as the air flow is going the other way, from the tank into the engine..
plus surley i need a filter on the catch tank if its sucking open air into the engine..

Mate, the easiest way to do it (in my opinion) get rid of the oil swirl pot, remove the oil return to the sump and block it with a bolt at the L piece ajoining the sump. Then from the rocker cover run one pipe over to your catch tank. I have mine located on the N/S strut

sounds good m8, what about the pipe i have going from the t piece to the bottom of the carb (carb breather ?) is it needed for the carb? will it be ok to remove and block off ?

Sorry mate, do you mean the inlet manifold? Do you mean the one next to the pipe that goes to the brake servo? If you do, then yea, put a bolt in the manifold but make sure it seals and just have the one pipe from the rocker

Yes mate, that is the inlet manifold and not the CARB! I am pretty sure it sucks in oil vapour into the combustion chamber. Take it off and block the inlet manifold with a suitable bolt and washer.

You'll be left with one pipe. Rocker to catch tank

Which pipes mate, as you have 2 that should have oil in, 2 that should have water in and 2 that should have air in

its not a huge amount of oil, and there is minimal play in shaft on turbo ,, i thought i would give the breather system i look before i condemed the turbo as advised by the wizard

Good lad, keep an eye on the oil catch tank and if your getting excessive build up of oil then you need to be looking at internals but it should be all gravy!!!

try fitting a catch tank or that oil is gonna end up in your intercooler and goinig into the engine etc probaly not good

If you have your original breather pipe going into the airfilter p[ipe then oil can be blown into there from the breather then all around the boost circuit. First thing i would do is remove the pipe going to the air filter and route that to a catch tank, you can modify the breather set up if you want or run it in standard format if you want but at leats route the fums away from the air filter

Re: breather system / catch tank

Do u mean the hoses that go from the air filter to the turbo and the one that goes from the turbo to the intercooler?

If these have oil in and your sure about the turbo then it could be sucking in excess oil vapour I don't think it wouldn't be a bad thing to run a catch tank or a filter

Re: breather system / catch tank

Becasue the standard set up is to have the cam cover (i think) plumbed into the telephone hose (the one that goes to the air filter) so when the turbo spools it'll be sucking oil vapour into the charge circuit. Its something to do with emission control all engines "breath" it just depends on how much
