just like to point out that renault did make it possible.......wayback in 1987-1988 with the renault 5 turbo production racer using a direct fuel injected 1.4 pushrod,(gordini head) garrett t3/4 turbo, drysump system, chargecooler with water injection to propel the mid engined beast to 430 bhp with 44.8 psi of boost:D....... all through a twin plate / factory standard un1 type gearbox for compliance with the french production championship rules......... and all without nos;)
by all accounts it was quite a lag monster with little power delivery below 4000rpm and from there to 7500 it was ballistic:smokin: traction was a issue also, renault fitted 16"x8.25" rims with 24.5" wide rubber on the front and 17"x8.75 "rims with 27" wide rubber on the rears, and it was still an absolute pig to control with large amounts of oversteer in corners:scared::cool::smokin:
so quite clearly it is possible:D,and with the advances in turbo design, and stand alone ecu technology, more so than back in the day;)
biggest hold back for most peeps would always be cost and long term reliability :)
but credit due you've achievied an epic result for the c1j for sure :agree:
well done Glen:cool::goodJob:
Any that was a multi-national corporation throwing most probably 100,000's possibly millions at it. I go with the little guys every time. Truly amazing!

yes ,but the fact remains what was used then, is accesable now and a lot cheaper ,ie better/ more effecient turbos, water injection ,fuel injection, stand alone ecu's, ( back then in 1987-1988 when stand alone technology ,etc would have cost the earth)
in a nut shell the engine upgrades needed to get these power ouputs and more are cheaper/ easier to get hold of today ;)

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Bear in mind that was with the 'Dini head, Glens done it using the C1J head, which creates lots more difficulties in itself, quite a piece of engineering, whether done by a big manufacturer or joe blogs in his shed. High power output, small cc engines are nothing new have been about (or on the drawing boards) since the 70s - look at F1 - but they are small light units with very efficient VE's, small piston sizes (if you ignore the BMW F1 turbo) not a tractor engine from the 60s, keeping the inlet charge cool is a big enough job by itself..... Let alone keeping the head on the block running that kind of boost.

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
I'm guessing since there's been no post about being in the 10's it's not gone to plan :/
-
Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
shal we start speculating then?
Rain stops play?
Gearbox throws in the towel?
Skipped the 10's and went straight for a 9 second pass... Maybe they haven't updated cos they are too pissed to post!!
-
Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Rain or gearbox would be my bet
Again if it were in the 9's someone would've said something by now
-
Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Maybe he's got his 10 second pass, and he's been on the phone to Roly at GT Tuning all day trying to get hold of an exclusive '13 second club' t-shirt

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Yes, rain unfortunately. Just got home. It was a wasted day sadly !!

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Well at least they're fairly civilised with drag racing, on the circuits we just get told to get on with it..I expect Glenn's car would sit there spinning the wheels all day on a wet strip!!

very true, the gordini head has huge valve and ports compared to the lowly GT Turbo head.

Even with those huge new tyres!;)

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
Mark the track temp will be to low for good times today and probably hard to get heat into the tyres.

Am thinking the new tyres only like really hot sticky tracks. Need my old tyres they gripped better hopefully when a few more people in the uk get these new tyres might be able to work out best pressures etc

Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
More than welcome to use old wheels again for few runs mate if you think it'll help ;)
That engine sounds so throaty!! You wouldn't expect it to be a 1.4 under the bonnet from the sound of it
-
Re: 445.2 bhp 1.4 c1j they said it could not be done
They run all day at the pod yesterday, typical.
Track seems alot better then saturday. we managed a 6.46 and 6.5.
Looks insane Glenn, great work.
