Renault 5 GT Turbo, Track Car.
Bought this back in July 2010 as a project with the sole idea off just using it for the shell, It had a full re spray a couple of years back and both sills replaced recently, So was a good base to start on. Then I was away in Canada for a month so nothing happened to it for a while.

I hadn't really touched it since I buying it and it just sat on my drive looking like this for the winter months.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03119.jpg
My plans where to fit a 180-200bhp Renault 5 GT Turbo engine I had and turn into a reliable track car. That then went out of the window when I was offered a complete F7P Turbo converted Renault 5 GT Turbo. It had only done about 1200 miles since the re build and had receipts adding up too thousands so I bought it !
One on the way back from picking it up.

The engine

Now that I had the new engine I thought I better start building the car up.
Over the last 6 months I have been collecting some parts for the build also cleaning up some others that I all ready had like:
Safety devices roll cage

Got so many plans for it in the future, but I'm holding back on alot as i want it ready for Mallory Park 2011.
Will do my best to keep this updated. enjoy :) Lewis

Bought a filler neck of a Renault 5 Campus to replace the second fuel tank found on the GT Turbo.

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Got the most of the front end in paint now. It was going to go to the body shop to have the inside and engine bay painted gloss black but time is tight before National day so I decieded to do it myself. I was given 6 can's of Ford matt black for free so thought why not, It was only meant to be a quick job to protect it from surface rust, but you can't seem to ever do a quick job on this car.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03619.jpg
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03614.jpg
The yellow stuff is filler primer, then I used some hi build primer.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03610.jpg
1200 grit wet n' dry
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03608.jpg
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03609.jpg
Cleaned down the surface with some panel wipe
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03615.jpg
Matt blacking, the bits little bit you see are seam sealer that flicked up as I took the pictures later in the day.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03622.jpg
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03626.jpg
As I'm running bonnet pins on the carbon bonnet I cut away the catch.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03629.jpg
Removing more seam sealer.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03625.jpg
Wire wheel disc after about 6 hours use :p
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03630.jpg
Mates turned up so got them to sanding and scraping on evan more seam sealer.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03636.jpg
I got bored at this point, So I put my 15" OZ wheels and my mates Clio 182, Coilovers want winding down now though.

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Had 6 cans of 3M under seal turn up today, The 6 should hopefully do the whole of the underside of the car.

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Started on the rear end at the weekend as the front is done for now.
Had some pleasant surprises when I took the rear bumper and arches off though :crap:

Wasn't happy at the weekend and really wanted to through the towel in with the whole project, it's just turning into such a big job ! Wished I had just bought a newer car something like clio 182 or something.

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Some of ashy's rear bumper mounts section will help you...
Why do people take the bidykits off.... all you will ever find is rust.... 5 years ago you may have found a nice suprise... now days.... not so much :(
Good project tho :)
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Not good and very surprising considering that car had an apparent full restoration by the previous owner whom was a car sprayer, looks like he sorted so it looked good but was hidding things underneath bits.
Keep at it Lewis if you do it right it will last along time before anything happens.
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
So after my little sulk :sad2: I started up the other car with the F7P Turbo engine still in, and that put a massive smile back on my face. :)
Next day I got the car back out and winched it up the garaged to ready to do the underside.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03671.jpg
And that's how it still stands. :)
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
have no fear, thats all normal stuff.
check my project, might help with places to check for rust.
https://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=7962&page=3
also them sections of ashys are great.. might be worth investing in some por15 at this point.

I know james, :agree: I said the same thing weeks ago when I found all the rust holes inside of the car. :(
Really, it was just a blow over on the outside ! and that still wasn't the best job in my eyes.
Owl well, it can only get better from now on. fingers crossed :cooter:

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
alot of effort going into this, would be a shame to give up on it now. makes me want to get going on mine again but it can wait.
i took all my body kit off and stripped down before i started doing any repair work just so i knew what i was dealing with before i started, i didn't want to spend time and money to find the back end was shot, but it's all fixable just dishearting when you find more bits that need repairing.
don't want to worry you but i'm sure somebody has said that matt paint in the engine bay isn't a good idea as it hard to keep looking clean

Luckily my sills have all ready been done not to long ago, I'm sure they would have looked the same as yours otherwise. :crap:

Thanks, yeah I'm not going to give up just yet, got to drive it first ;)
I did rush into it a bit but I'm such a tight time scale I wanted to get it done, and having already had a restoration I didn't think it was going to be this bad. But like DJINUK said I think all 5's have the rust just that most of it is hidden and when you see it it's to late.
The matt black it only a temporary job to stop the worse of the surface rust, as the paint was free and I don't have time before mallory to get it painted properly. But already is proving to be a bitch to keep clean. :dearme:

thanks , mew neither, funny you mention the screen , i went to the bodyshop today and they have just took it out, just updated the thread with pics

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
I'm going to be replacing all my brake lines with fresh copper stuff, not to sure what size to use though,
Maybe something like this ? 3/16" in size as that seams to be the most common.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-16-X-25-FT-7...#ht_1922wt_907
Obversely I know I need a cutter, bender and flairier
Thanks

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
I've just done this on mine - cost me £60 to have all made up at Motor factors. I have been told by a few people now, that it is just not worth making your own lines up. Apparently the cheap formers etc make hard work of it, so I took mine off and handed them over to recieve some shiney new ones for just £60.00.
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
id argue its definatly worth making your own.. enough copper pipe to do the car is £7, a few ends about 30 p each..
I use the laser brake flaring tool and it works a treat.
Also once you got the tools you never have that issue of doing a job on a car only to get to a point where that 20 year old brake lines ready to break at the tiniest bit of movement , as you simply crack the tools out and make a fresh one.
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
make your own brakepipes
made thousands over the years
all you need is a flairing tool and thumbs on your hands
:)
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Thanks everyone.
So going to make my own using the 3/16" stuff
Will let you know how I get on.

in 20 years - only had to do this once would be my argument.
What, more tools in the garage that I only use every quarter century - lol.

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Not really done a lot over the last couple of days, as I felt I've been working on the car every day and night since I started on it. So went out clubbing friday night and turned up to the RTOC meet down Southend seafront by mistake last night :p
I did get my willwood disc's painted though, as they have been sitting around the attracted some surface rust, and rusty disc's do look **** !
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/71c219f1.jpg
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/9b9b8830.jpg
Rubbed them down lightly with the angle grinder wire wheel, then gave them a light coat of very high temp paint (the pads will just wear out the paint on the face)
-
Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Stared the job today I have been putting off for the last week, wire wheeling the underside of the car ready for underseal !
I had to go and buy a new grinder first as I killed the last one.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03703.jpg
[IMG]http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac305/LewisCunningham_badass/Grey%20Renault%205%20GT%20Turbo/DSC03708.jpg[/IMG
Holding the grinder in the air for any length of time kills your arms, so kept stopping and done some other jobs
Stripped down the rear beam
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03710.jpg
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03711.jpg
Cleaned up the rear disc's ready for painting like the front ones, They look **** and eat through pad with the grooves In, but I might as well get some use from them before getting new ones.
Also took the bottom of the boot lid off as I wanted to change the badges over to an original one I had on my other car, the cars are different shades so I can't just clip the other strip back in.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03705.jpg
It does have some laquar peal but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, as I don't really want to paint it.
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/DSC03713.jpg
I made a right mess taking the old badge of as it was all bonded on. It's going to be to visible with the new smaller badge fitted, so I't really needs re-painting. The problem Is, the paint is a non OE paint and a mix of a few different colors so will be really hard to match. I think I'm just going to do it gloss black for now or get it carbon wraped to kinda match the dark black bonnet. :/

Re: Renault 5 GT Turbo Tungsten Track Car
Right, not done a lot over last month really, as I figured I was never going to make Mallory Park in June and I didn't want it to be a "that al do" project, to get it finished.
On the plus side, after weeks of research, phone calls and haggling I got a myself a new welder.
If you know about welding you will know how good Lincoln Electric welders are! I went for the 191c model with the new Al bee gas.
Also bought some campus rear window seals, as a mate Is looking into getting templates made up for 4mm Lexan poly carb windows. Plastics for performance wont silly money for there window kit, so im just going to make my own.
Will get some pictures up tomorrow.
