Djs second R5 Tungy Jplate

Here is my new r5, no mot/tax at the min, some folks may remmber it belonging to username paddyswag (somthing along them lines)

Its been stood a while etc and needs a good clean over.. told you i havnt given up with the r5's.

Car also came with heaps of spares including spare engine, new chrome scuttle, just to mention a few bits

I did an insurance check and i can insure it for £16 for the week, so i decided id go for it to get it moted.

First job was to remove the interior, and throw in a red carpet as the grey orignal just didnt work.
Whilst at it i took a look at the floor pan which was in good condition with just a bung to reseal.

I also want to take some time to remove any unused brackets and tidy up the engine bay.

I attempted to sort out an earth problem which took ages on the rear back lights

bit of an update, ive got the sills, just waiting to get them welded up, and ive robbed the garage for the week so decided to strip down the cooling system etc , have a mouch to see if everything is in order and also stumbled across a few things

Diffrent carb top, removed some of the perc fan wiring, and brackets (unneeded) Started fitting some of the chrome scuttle panel.. poser i know... and fitted a braided inline oil filter on the turbo oil feed.

well as the F reg r5 has now gone it frees up some time to tackle the J plate..

one thing is that sections of the bodykit need paint attention and i wish to remove the rear exhaust cut out and smooth out the recess.

I also purchased a carbon fibre bonnet.

I began the rear bumper tonight.

Im no expert but this is how i tackled it.

First i removed the black strip and used a flap wheel on the grind to key up the inside of the recess and also the very close surrounding area, i also used some 80 grade paper to help do this around the edges.

I then masked up the surrounding area to not get p40/fibreglass bridging filler where it wasnt needed.

I then filled the recess making sure to not bring it 100% flush with the surface and instead leave about 1mm to fill

then once this had gone off i used 80 grade paper to remove any bits of p40 that came above the recess and also to key up the flat area that i would be filling. I also gave it a clean up with panel wipe to make sure the p38/filler adheres well.

I then filled the full area making sure to filler outside of the recess aswell whilst keeping waste minimal

next i will guide coat this and use a large block and 120 grade to get it down to around the correct level.

after many hours sanding i got the filler back to 400 grade and flat, got it mostly right on the second fill so all good.. blasted it up with high build and a guide coat and begain wet flatting with 800.

Cars at bodyshop, the sills have been welded on, now hes just sorting out getting them blended smart and completed..

He phoned me to come and inspect the welding before the seam sealed etc, and to be honest the work looked very good, he didnt go right to the front of the car however he showed me why and it was completly solid there.

well ive spoke to him about doing a lot of work for the rtoc lads, and he said he can look at fitting a pair of sills , and sorting any small areas of inner for around the £250 mark providing you provide the sills.

This price blew every other bodyshop out of the water, hes always done a few other bits for me free of charge (just under the petrol cap etc).

Prices may vary a bit but thats just an idea, if you come down with me we can sort somthing though

price for a blowover for my 205 please, or can i have his number, thanx babe x

no both solid apart from on the passenger side I have about 1cm of rust on the seam.

I was down there last nite and took a couple of pics.. This is basically at the stage where hes painted up to the character line, and has jst wet flatted it into the existing paint to around 3000 grit also along the sill hence its dull, it will be buffed up before i collect tomorrow.

well i tackled a few of the jobs for the day, first being fitting of the front mount intercooler, and side exit exhaust system, also removed the remains of the bits of standard side sticker that was still on the car.

We also fitted the carbon bonnet although this requires more adjustment to get sitting better.

just been working away on repairing the preping the bodykit for paint.

one of the front arches had some very bad damage to the arch as through the car had a blow out and ripped a very large chunk out, I cut a section out of an old arch, fibreglass this in , and then filled the arch, there is also a few more cracks etc ive had to repair.. the photos are not great but give an idea.

Also i took on what so far has been a nightmare of a job. I will be running a side exit and therefore didnt want to see the crappy hole for the rear exit exhaust, so therefore i cut up another rear bumper, qbonded the section in , fibreglass matted it from behind and began filling the arches to blend the 2 sections together as close as possible.. Just to point out this really has not been easy but its getting close now.

i finished all the repairs on my r5 bodykit over the last week (there was quite a few).

I high built them yesterday using maxmeyer high build at a 5:1 ratio, I decided to try somthing and rigged up my 2 pretty small compressors to give myself some mroe air pressure... the result was excellent, 2 motors about 70 or so litres of air , and my 29psi hvlp gun didnt have any problems, this made it so much easier, and the high build is going to be much easier to flat down.

Only update really is many hours ive speant wet flatting the kit down with a block, its all came out really well though so expect paint on very soon, and all being well ill still be on target to get the car done in time for nats day.

I also restudded the arches where needed using the same stuff trixandflix used so thats all good, just hope it all lines up :D

well today i set up my gazebo and compressors and set about doing my first basecoat/clear coat paint... to say i was a little nervous as i was doing my first metalic ever aswell, and the weather was hit and miss etc etc..

Had great help my my mrs in setting up..

arches , skirts and grill all paint, 3 coats of base, 3 coats of lacquer..

And im very happy with the end results ..

only 2 drips and these were caused by over filling the gun and when painting one of the arches it came out the top :(.

This is how the bits came out the gun..

Plans are to flat with 1500, then polish up with g3 followed by super resin..

the arch that had the drip im going to flat out and then relacquer when i do my bumpers, however im not sure if i just 1500 the whole arch and then apply a fresh coat of lacquer.. any guideance much appreciated.

fitted the front bumper with some new clips and screws but not happy with it so going to renault to get brand new fixings i think.+

Also fitted the skirts, i bolted the bottom and bonded the top however im not 100% kene on it, think at a later date im going to take them off and measure up exactly where the fixings need to be and do it propelly

there are loads on classic rot places on a gtt.. sills, windscreen surrounds, behind the headlights next to the bumber mount, inner boot well behind the plastic trims as mud sits on a bracket behind the filler neck, rear quarter windows go under the rubbers, etc etc etc.. so many places..

you doing well tho, thats looking mint

if you look in my pics you can see some of the rot on mine.. the sill is rotting inside to out as the underseal was spot on, yet after i wire wheeled it off theres loads of holes and you can see the metal behinds shot to sh1t.. do be shy getting into these places if your putting all this effort in.. i want 99.9% of the rot gone on mine so i'm going mad man..

well tonight im going to be giving the car a final check over, bolted the bumpers up, and insuring it..

Then tomorrow is the day of rekoning MOT TIME... first time the cars been on the road in many many years.

good news it passed mot..

Thanks for the kind words folks, Ive purchased a set of genuine wings as these have some slight dents, also purchased 2 x doors, that ill get straight and painted ready to drop on.

Well the car always has a change ticking sound, a little lit tappets but difffrent, Sparkie mentioned it could be in the inlet gasket. When my engine decided to fire off its oil cap i washed it with degreaser and water, and when i started the engine back up after the ticking sounded even worse, i decided to take the plunge and last night removed the inlet/eghaust manifolds, its missing 3 studs, 1 beign closest near the turbo and it does appear thats its been blowing.

tonight i plan to get it back together with fresh studs and nuts and a fresh gasket, fingers crossed it will be better.

Well fixed the inlet, and the car still has a very slight knock..

ahh well

decided im not a huge fan of the carbon bonnet, so im gna take it off in replacement of a standard one.. so ive just speant a hour sorting out areas of rust on one of my spare r5 bonnets, hopefully by next week it will be ready to paint.

As the sun came out yesterday i decided i needed to do somthing,.. So i began work on sorting out the standard bonnet that came on the car and preping it for fresh paint.. I also fitted a pair of speakers and crappy cd player to the r5. And gave the carpets a damn good hoover out.
Whilst doing all this and working damn hard the mrs decided to give him a hand in the form of watching.

rs250nut could you reccomened me a decent seam sealer to use on the underside of the bonnet, theres a few bits of sealer than have began to come away and whilst its getting treatment i wouldnt mind replacing it.

Ive seen grey stripe at halfords if its any good.

I try to stay away from anything that halfrauds sell, only using them as a last resort. You want some proper stuff from a bodyshop supplier and it will probabley be cheaper too.

aight then, generally i stay clear of halfords, but its damn local and occasionly a life saver, ill grab somthing from morleys when im next down that way then, this bonnet aint half took a decent batterying of stone chips cross the front.

update,

sold the carbon fibre boonet n grabbed the original out..

began working on the rust and found a hole the size of a 50p, bit of work later and its gone.

ah well, it spray the bearing out that connects the conrod to the crank.. easy fix

looks good! that carbon bonnet was proper kindygarden stuff!

speant the best part of 4 hours wet sanding this morning.. the bonnet had a lot of crap in it as it was windy, lots of crap managed to land in it, i attacked it with 1500 and then 2000 , could of done with somthing a bit more brutal i think to speed things up.

Anyway after many hours the result, a nice matt bonnet, with 99% of the crap sanded out.

I then removed the bonnet from the car and used a g3 polish with a hard compound pad and this was the result after 1 pass,

then i went on with a soft polish and a softer mop head, the polish was very cheap and called encore , reccomended by the local bodyshop supplier, i really cant fault it.

I then fitted the bonnet to the very grubby car - dont worry its just lacquer run off from when i wet flatted it earlier on the car and all washed off.

Unforunatly one of the repairs on the lower corner began to bubble though, i fear this was becuase i repaired the bonnet and painted it all in the same day :( , possibiliy sealing the filler in before it had fully cured, either way i will see if the problem gets worse, its barely noticable at min, however you can see the small bubbles here. If it does get worse im going to use the exercise to teach myself how to blow new paint into exisiting as its not somthing ive done yet.

ok quick update, ive got o.e interior now, curtosy of matt from ilkeston.. thanks mate, before any1 mentions, i know they are both passenger seats but for now they will do, no real major rips, just tiny wear holes, and saggy bolsters, forgot how comfy o/e stuff is.

And the biggest ball ache.. I brought 2x delocked doors a while back, they had m3 carbon mirrors on.. I got one ready to flat for paint and then noticed the carbon mirrors didnt have a baseplate as such... and was surpirsed they bolted straight to the doors oirignal brackets.. then i looked again and realised a plate had been welded in and filted over the original.. I began the crap taste of grinding the welds back to remove it and the result was below

I was ready to scrap the doors but then like a fool gave myself the bodywork taste of seeing if i could rebuild them to accept the original mirrors.. I got a few spot welds in to hold the remaining now very week metal, and fibreglassed the holes remaining.

also removed the sump and timin cover to reseal, however had a nightmare.. first time round i found a snapped bolt, this took hours to remove and required the engine dropping of its mounts to gain access.. then i found i coudlnt get oil pressure.. anyways about 8 hours later and its back together..

noticed some pretty fresh marks in the timing cover.

whilst pushing the car this morning my mum managed to catch the door, this bent it down... a bottle jack and 5 mins later i managed to bend the hinges to make it close again however theres now a huge dirty crease which made me push harder to get the doors prepped and ready to paint..

didnt realise you were after a set of these mark, to be fair the onl reason i had them is i was after some splits , and these were very local (within a mile) and although not cheap, compared to the prices on ebay etc they were good..

Mark how serious are you about having a set.. reason i ask is a guy down near me gets through a lot of wheels (wheel whore) and he may have a few more special wheels..

bbs rm, oz turbo, that kind of thing.. hes not cheap cheap, but hes reasonable..

If they are the set bbs i seen for sale a couple of days ago you got them for a very good price:agree: If i had the ££ i would have bought them for the van.

Its not at the top of my piority of things to get but if a good set come along i would be interested at the right price.

Decided to whip my carb off for a rebuild before i go into any finer tuning to help eliminate any possible problems im having due to hard gaskets etc..

1 cleaned carb, usinga bucket of vinegar , warm water and 15 mins.. plus a nice brush

tom came over today and this year the r5 is coming off the road for a revamp, to start with im tackling the rust in the boot, now the previous owner was a big fan of mdf floors, carpet and sound deadening , unfortunatly this had the effect of trapping any water in the boot and therefore rusting it, now the rest of the car is pretty damn mint especially the floor pan, however the boot was another story.

hehe thanks guys glad you like the wheels :), cant remmber what they originally came on to be fair, was after a set for agesss..

The bodyshop whom fitted the sills on the r5 pretty much allow me to do my own thing up that way ( a few sprays now and then) in return i help them prep a bit of work, ive been offered to do a few spray jobs, but instead i point them to the bodyshop and do some of the work and take a small cut, aswell as gaining invaluable experiance and as said being able to do my own little project up there is a bonus (this will be going up on a month or so).

Im sure im coughing on the fumes from melting that sound deadening with the heatgun.

They are bbs rm's off a mk2 golf, worth in good nick about £800. Well nice wheels

ah yea thats the one, i remmber now you mentioned, these do have small nicks around the edge but hardly noticable. :) I did pay for them though to be fair :( no major bargain.

Indeed mike, i and tom both have that same blister, quite rewarding sticking it all in that bucket thoguh :( next job will be to weld in some plate and make in look damn near o/e spec welding.

also grabbed a pic from last sunday night, this was the second time the car chucked the fan belt that night (alternator bush had gone), the first time it chucked it off at a less desirable place, needless to say i have 30 mins of conversations with coppers as they attempted to prove i was racing, even tried to give me a £30 fine for pushing the car onto the pavement, (sooner me repair it in the middle of the road).

Ground back some of the rust to see the full extent, i think i now have a clear idea of how i will tackle this however i have somthing far more worrying.. this rot, caused from all the mud and crap stuck behind the filler neck, its very tight for access and im really not sure how to make a panel and weld iit in well up there.. Im half tempted to get it back to fresh metal, por 15 it, then do what i know how to do best and fibreglass it (matt/resin) , that way i can make the shape correct and i will be able to rust proof it well.. thinking this would probably be a better option than making a hash job of welding in a patch only for water to get back in at it.

lol i know dude, i think the fact im quite vigilant dosent help, if i see a bit of rust i will investigate it with a screwdriver, cant be living with that horrible crap metal attached to my minty paint.

I think a lot of the r5's out there are very rotton, its just that on most its either covered up or not noticied until its far to late.

hmm ive found this on the por 15 website

The fiberglass mat is used to span small rust holes that are too large for the putty but don't necessarily need welding. The hole is covered with the fiberglass mat, which is then soaked in POR 15 paint and allowed to dry. This transforms the flexible fiberglass into a rock-solid chunk of rust-proof flooring. This is a permanent repair, though it's not advisable to consider this a fix for those Fred Flintstone floorpans where there's more open air than sheetmetal; those are more often lost causes.

sounds very promising, so using the por15 as the resin itself rather than fibreglass resin, its an interesting theory but claims its a perm repair... I may have to try this.. 45 mins with the wire brush it is tonight then.. i have a feeling this stuff will work damn well for exactly what i need it for , and once covered in stone chip etc will look good as new.

tonight i cut away the knacked old bumper mount, that had already been welded twice..

then i began lining up the panel made by ashy.. unfortunatly when the bracket was previously replaced the inner peice of steel was largely cut away and therefore it may be difficult to line up the centre holes onto it, however it dosent look far off there.

Best thing to do is tack it in place and test fit the bumper before fully welding to get it spot on.... Ipainted all the bare metal before welding mine on and then painted it all again after welding inside and out. Also I used seam sealer around all the joints to ensure no water could get in!

yup, it will be plenty buried in product by the time im done with it.. At the moment ive actually slotted it underneath the panel at the top, would you advise trimming back the panel at the top a little more and butting them up instead.

Well update..

I fitted the new bumper brackets, i started with the drivers which i struggled with , however after a bit of time i was solidly fitted..

then onto the passenger i blitzed it no proble,m, very easilly.. on the drivers i actually cut a little to high and have to glass it up slightly.


All the welding and repairs took the following order..

Zinc Etch, por 15, seamsealer, then strone chip...

My opinion on por 15... where you have loose rust/metal its brilliant, however dispite following the instructions on 100% fresh metal , i would avoid as its just so difficult to get it to chemically bond, instead id just stick to a good quality etch primer for this followed by a top coat.

Currently just waiting for seam sealer to set.. a few pics here

When you say the POR-15 wouldn't bond to bear metal.........are you sure the metal wasn't contaminated??

I only ask because when i painted my block, i used the marine clean, then metal ready as they advise....

But when i applied the first coat of Por-15 it didn't take! - So i stripped everything down again.......and PROPERLY!! cleaned and dried the block once more, applied the first coat again- hey presto:wasntme:

Don't get me wrong, you obviously know what your doing, but just bear it in mind - a surface that i originally thought was preped and contaminate free - just wasn't!!:mad::D

hehe cheers walace, ill be honest theres still areas (back of the inners sills) which need work, however to do them propelly would mean pulling the outers off etc and just simply will mean this car wont be out again this year, which id be pretty upset, so ive sorted the main areas, and this winter ill probably get it on some ramps and have a set of fresh inner sills and any other bad areas sorted.

As for the por 15, i dont think it was contamination, i feel more it was because the metal didnt have a key , was very shiny, where as a engine block is obviously cast so has a fair bit more to bite onto if you, It didnt stick etc, just not really aswell or anywhere near aswell as the rusted areas.

Let me know a weekend when you could do with a hand putting her back together mate n ill see if i can be there n do a bit of the monkey work. Just gimmie a bit of notice and try n make it a warm weekend, im not as hardcore as you!

little update.. I purchased some new bits.

Fresh bottom end, new pistons, liners , oil pump, etc...
new indiactors , grill badges, leads, chrome brackets etc.

Finished stripping the car down and hooked it onto the Aframe to take to bodyshop. dosent it just look at state.

Oh also got hold of a fresh boot lid as mine was showing signs of rust.
Its been a very expensive past couple of weeks.

just goings to be welding a couple of bits in matey, defo not worth replacing the panel its actually pretty damn good :).. just want it back.

Unfortunatly my bank balance is very bad this month however i had today off work with nothing to do.. so i did the only thing i could do with the fiver in my back pocket, went and got some red engine enamel and gave the block a lick of paint, masked it all up and painted, i really wanted to spray it however the spray engine enamel i got was crap so that went back and i got the brush on, its not gone on to bad but its a bit thin out the can which meant it wanted to either not cover or drip, despite how thin you apply the coats.

went to see the car yesterday, all the screens been welded up etc, door locks gone, he wasnt happy with the doors , so he took them all the way back to metal and started from the ground up with getting them straight, i told him previously how much i hated seeing ripply r5s considering they are weight boxey 80's spec cars.

Retrim prices on just the rear bench to match the fronts are coming about between £500 and £650.

Im going to shop about a little more but i just cant help think its a bloody lot of wonga, but then again it would finish the car.

then this little devil sat on my shoulder keeps uttering about a pair of decent bucket seats and a harness, but im really just not sure.. grrr.

I know what you mean, just not sure if the car will look complete so to speak afterwards, im not really after the fastest car in the world, nor the meanest track car.. just after a complete all rounder if you catch my drift, although if i could make it look well and turely complete even with a pair of buckets i may be tempted.

Do you ever use the back seats? I know most people dont, i used to but doubt i will in the future (infact the red 5 is going to be stripped & caged)

£500 to have rear seats look the same is alot of money..... I would leave them till last, then decide on what you want... Buckets seam to hold there money atm, where as spending £500 on the rear bench to match will just cost you that... You wont get much of it back if you sold them or sold the car..

i was just about to ask if you actually get use out of the back seats but mr penfold beat me to it;)

decided to crack on and get some stuff done i could do in the garage.

First off i wire brushed down the reverse side of my water pump (id purchased a new front), the front was no matter how much cleaning it undertook it was never going to look as fresh as the front.

With this in mind i sprayed both the halfs with Halfords VHT. It went on quite well but still rubbed off if u rubbed it hard enough after it cured.. I used a heatgun over the object quite close, usually paint would lift under this treatment. My conclusion is that the paint goes on almost like a powder and require the heating of the object to actually cure.

So had to do another one, also degreased the inlet and a few other bits and started giving them a paint up so its nice and fresh, think im going to grab some vht lacquer as im finding halfords vht paint always seems to scratch of, its stays almost like a powder, strange.

Also etch primed a few bits to go black, these will get a gloss black coat followed by some clear coat.

Also popped to the bodyshop, he noticed a tiny ripple in my door when flatting so he put some more filler in , however hes also put sound deadening in to try to strenghten it for when hes sanding to get it 100% flat.. mmmm

finished the inlet, you may notice i have removed some brackets, as hopefull with my water and breather setup i wont require these , leaving a cleaner engine bay.

This is the intended appearance im after on the majority of the build, o/e looking with easy to clean being that its lacquer, also stainless steel fixings where possible.

finally managed to source an head with plenty of meat on it so i stripped it down, ran a tap down all the threads to check there clean, stripped it down, gave it a good degreaseing and im currently putting it back together with some fresh stem seals, the valve seats all look in very good condition so a quick valve lap and jobs a gudden.

I plan to mask up the head and give it a coat of vht silver and clear coat.. I know i could clean it however being clearcoated will make it far easier to keep clean.

Continued with the head tonight, fitted new studs with fresh lock-tight as im fed up pulling r5s apart with loos/missing head studs and bolts. Then i fitted up the inlet and the eghaust manifold.

decided to fit the head to the engine yesterday, removed the masking that that id fitted to stop crap getting in it, and it had left a right sticky mess, going to guess it somehow mixed with the assembly lube etc..

Anyway with that all cleaned off.

Also ordered some nor por15 products, these products so far for me have worked beyond belief and in my opinion offer a BETTER soloution to powder coating, purely because the finish is just as hard and strong as powdercoat , however you dont have to reply on the numpty spraying it to do a good job and not leave edges that seem to be prone to chipping away. Saying that im yet to try either of these products from the range but i will report back.

Por-15 is proven dude, you saw the results on my 5 build a few years ago.. and im still using it to this day.

Remeber my other thread though...

Wear gloves or a week later it will still be on you.... Also remember to clean and prep correctly

Yea i saw that.. Over used the basic por 15 , over rust product, however neither of these two. The silver ill be using on the gearbox in the next couple of days most likely so watch this space :)

Then applied the Metal Ready, this is basically a spray that you allow to etch into the product, now the insructions say to put them on , then wash off... however i spoke to a guy at frost who seemed to really know what he was on about and he said dont wash it offer as it will give it far better adhesion...

gearbox is also finished, the finish i would give 8/10, its definatly not as good as the por in black, i put it down to the pigment in the silver seperating, kinda hard to explain but lets say you get a run, they are very noticable because the black sort of seperates from the silver, also its a very matt finish with no gloss at all, i guess thats to resemble a cast alloy though so can be forgiven.. however the finish is rock hard and i certainly not see it flaking off.

I had a strutbrace that had seen better days, and also had some large chips missing, i spoke to dave about welding some metal in to grind down and polish, he explained that welding the metal in wasnt an issue however before polishing it needed dipping to remove the anodised coating..

I felt i had done enough polish for a while with my wheels, and dave offered to sort the lot out for me, i took him up on the offer and im delighted.. , unfortunatly i have no before pics but..

well today the car has seen paint, this is straight out the gun and require a flat and polish yet. you will notice its a diffrent colour to the original, when the sprayer (carl) asked for my colour preff i went for the original colour that the car should have been in, which has a strong green flek within it, however when the light moves away from it its a dark grey.. Kinda hard to explain, next week it will be ready to collect, and take to bits.. very carefully :D

yea , theres no such thing as cheap ones really, my advise is just to get some mate, you wont loose money on them, think of it as a unboltable investment :)

I have a few questions about your intercooler, I have exactly the same cooler, I like your pipe run, I was going to go under the subframe and round with the outlets of the cooler at the bottom, but having seen your pics think I will just blatently copy your pipe run! :wasntme:

Are the reducers off the cooler, particularly the one on the drivers side 45 degree reducers? How is the seal from the reducer to the ally pipe again on the drivers side? No issues? And finally, :coffee: did you have to chop much if anything out from the bumper and grill?

Just seems a much more practical pipe run than going under the subframe, and I will be able to keep the fogs.

ill be honest buddy, ive no idea about the pipes used, i bought the whole lot as a kit off turbo ted some time back, ive never blown any boost pipe off other than the top carb one, and thats at 18psi. Your more than welcome to copy the run though buddy, as for cutting, ive made no cuts to the bumper at all :)

Well , i got the coolant circuit (modified) , and the carb/fuel lines and vacume lines all fitted up, I ordered lots of oil from halfords (gbox holds 3.4litres!!).. I primed the lump got it all turning over.. and then eventually fired it .. and she runs :)..

to sum up.. oil in header tank but no where else.

After brief discussion it could be residue in the lines etc.

it could be a cracked coil in the rad (as they also cool the oil),

or it could maybe be a potential cracked head ( however the head comes from a good source so id be surprised).

Ive cleaned out the header tank and will run it back up tonight to see if it happens again and if so how badly.

Well good news.. Swapped the rad and the oil issue seems to have gone away :),

Also adjusted the tappets from 0.20 - .0.25 to 0.15 / 0.20 and the results below.

Also as we had good weather last night i got the gauges all wired up , , the breather setup finished, and even chucked the strutbrace on , courtesy of dave richard.

just gone threw the whole project, cracking build, nice to see someone who had a 5 as rotted out as mine was and done all the hard bit, i found making the inner arch in the back was the hardest bit for me, and after about 8 tubes of sticker flex, three rolls of welding wire, and buckets of u-pol sealent and hammerite it was finished, good job!:agree::agree:

will be building up a set of genuine bbs rm 2 peice splits for it, but im still not 100% on tyre size yet, probably 195/45/15s.

yup, as is always the case with these things, small fiddlly bits can take days/weeks, but as soon as you get to the last bits its easy so very quickly come stogether.

However.. issue..

Leaking oil from between the gearbox and the engine

Worst case crank seal.. engine out.. gearbox off
Best case leaking sump.. still not a nice job at all.. worst part is im gona have to drive it to bed in the rings before i can sort it.. As soon as i know more i will be letting the company that built the engine know about it.

Got lots done on the r5 today, however spotted an oil leak between the gearbox and the engine .. gona guess either the sump half moons or at worst the crank seal..

Will see if it cures the oil leak, if not then its crank, which means ill be hauling the whole engine back out ! again.

Decided since i had to take the sump off ill at least make it worthwhile and fit my baffled sump back on.

cheers guys :), its not perfect by a long shot, but a part of me is scared of even pushing for perfection as i dont have the heated garage etc to go with it. Just trying to tone the interior down now with a black or grey carpet, and get the rear seats trimmed to match the fronts.

Imho, you've got exactly the right approach. As nice it would be to have a better than factory finish or even concourse, it just isn't worth the time, money and heart ache it would cause.

I tried to get mine to perfect condition but didn't have the knowledge to or equipment to do it myself and trusted a body shop to do the necessary work to bring it up to the high standards I was hoping for, it didn't happen and now I'm back to square -3. Do what is needed to save it from the scrap yard and give it another 10+ years where it should be, on the road.

I changed my carpet from red to gray as I'd removed all the other little red details and it made a hell of a difference to the appearance, never got as far as re trimming the rear seats, best I could do was an old sonic the hedgehod duvet cover with a black back thrown over them :laugh:

I agree that there's no point going mad for concourse, you want to be able to use the car and not worry every second but there's a nice middle ground where top quality is definitely worth the effort if it's not going to cost the earth (or years), to achieve. :agree:

Indeed on the way to building cars i got fed up on relying on folks hence i self taught bodywork, etc theres a few bits on the car ill repaint, the rear tailgate plastic strip has a few bits in it , and one of the arches has a dimple id like to sort.

At some point id love to land on a pair of perfect doors but for now it will make me happy, i look forward to giving it all a good polish up. And getting some real miles on it :cool:

its a loverly carpet you got there.. quick question for everyone.... you see how djs has the matt on the drivers side stiched in why dose mine have it on both paasenger and drivers side? my old 5 just had drivers side too.. strange or was it a factory option?

Just a quick question... Is the passenger side wheel sitting right, looks too far back in the arch... I had this problem before I welded my wishbones up.... They kept moving.
