hello
im seriousley interested in buying a phase 1
i have only ever owned phase 2's so if there is a kind person out there who can tell me the drifference between them that would be great all i know is that the turbo is not oil cooled i think.
what interior do they have? have they still got the red carpets.
please help :)
Ph1 normally have slits in the rear arch's, the interior is not red flecked seats... think ther just black, Gear knob is different, different cooland bottle (Square not round)

I'm not a Phase one oficionado but I'm pretty sure that Phase 1's have:
Grey Carpets
Grey Seats
Non Water Cooled Turbo
AEI Unit mounted engine side of the bulkhead
No Perc Fan
Different wheels & bodykit with fake grilles on rear arches
Square coolant bottle
Different centre console
That's enough to got you started I guees.

Phase 2 has leaky windows, central locking, etc, adds weight, but i dont think it's 100kg heavier than a ph1 is it?
p1 has a different aei unit, renix208 rather than 209, so allthou its 5bhp down the performance is about the same, the ph1 is actually 0.1sec quicker to 60mph than the ph2 is standard form.
They have no rear spoiler as standard, some has only oil cooled and some has oil and water cooled turbos, later Phase I has perc fans, gear knobs are the same. Different heat sheild, different grill, under light trim, rear arches, different front bumper and fogs, wheels, centre console, door cards carpets, pumbing, no head light adjusters on early ones, different feul filter & pump, grey back shelf, decals, Bendix 208 infront of the bulk head, exhaust mounts, front shocks & anti roll bar. Some didn't have electric windows. Different grill badge and a GT turbo badge on the grill. No knock sensor, shorter TDC lead.
I think that is all I can remeber without looking again.

My first C reg one had no electric windows, no perc fan and the wiring hadn't been cut about. Also no sunroof. My current d reg one does have a perc fan and loads of other bits.Quote:

my ph1 had electric windows but went back 2 renault 568miles 2 have a perc fan fitted. The only way we can make a proper list is 2 get hold of sales booklet 4 both the ph1 & 2 and compare them, it seems alot of ph2's had stuff as standard that were options on a ph1
This is what I had heard. There there had been a recall. First time to add the perc fan and then to change a fuse from a 15 amp to a 7.5 amp as the 15 amp fuse took to long to pop, so the wiring would melt before the fuse did its job, but could be wrong.Quote:

boost referencing circuit is slightly different on ph1 - has a large metal one way valve thing, as opposed to small plastic on on ph2.
metal starter motor heatshield on ph1.
metal turbo heatshield on ph1.
head design is different on ph1.- springs sit on pedestal, ph2 sit in bucket.
no valve guide seals on ph1.

Someone please collate this and put it into an article!
- There is a difference in the way the exhaust mounts on a Ph1, Mark can add detail (as I don't know it).
- Passenger wing mirror was optional on Ph1 (with no interior adjuster).
- Colours available were different on Ph1, 690 silver was different to the ph2 shade, no raider blue, no glacier white,
- some early Ph1 sumps were baffled (has this ever been proven absolutely)?
- early Ph1 stereos were an option (not standard)
- early Ph1 alloy wheels were an option (not standard)
confirmed by Paul B in my many converstations with him :)
- side decals different on Ph1
- believe rear seat belts may have been optional on early Ph1

Depends what your into IMO. In stock form, I think the Ph.1 looks better, however modified, I think Ph.2's look better - Mainly because of the colour coding and splitter on the front bumper.. I suppose you could do that to an O.E Ph.1, but it would be sacrilege IMO.

I have just brought a phase 1 which in its life has had losts of phase 2 parts added, in fact im not sure what to call it....... :confused:

Im a fan of phase one alloys must admit,anyone got these alloys on a phase 2 gt turbo:)
my ph1 1986 did have a red carpet and it has the bleeping noise if you take the keys out with lights on :confused:
it had electric windows , green tints and both wing mirrors , only the drivers side had manual adjustment .
So were all these optional upgrades?
