Red R5 GTT Never Ending Project
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
Ive owned my R5 since i was 17, 12 years now. Bought it near enough standard all those years ago, and its been an on going project ever since. I could write on here all day about my cars history in the last 12 years, but il keep it short!
Couple of pictures from when i bought it

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5003.jpg
Many engine mods and rebuilds followed working up through turbo sizes, t2, t25, t28.
Next came a full respray (nov 2004) along with new wings, smoothed bumpers etc

2005 trip to france, with Moggy, Sparkie, Roger & Stu21t for the 20th birthday bash
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5008.jpg
Back to drag racing, running t28, on std venturi carb, low comp engine, my personal best was a 13.2 @ 102mph back in 2005.

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5010.png
Next in the winter of 2004/2005 came one of the first efi conversions in the club, custom manifold, shortened cossie rail, cossie injectors , edis spark, megasquirt ecu
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5011.jpg
Furthur to this came t3 turbo and external wastegate
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5012.jpg
Pretty much now it ended up in 2009 , before being garaged for a few years
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5013.jpg
Then i decided to set up my own business in one of my other hobbys, off roading, which has been my main priority over the last 4/5 years, here is my main company demo / competition truck that has evolved over the last 5 years.
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...0Uploads/1.jpg
I did get the r5 to my unit about a year ago and started abit of work, but just didnt have the time so went back home unfinished, but i did manage to get the engine out and repainted, and all the engine bay redone along with the front wheel arches and subframe.
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5014.jpg
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5015.jpg
Over the last 4 years, ive had micro blisters start appearing under the paint, on the n/s/r 1/4 panel, roof and tailgate, reading up on it, its caused by water in the compressor tank and airlines when the car was painted. So after some decision making ive decided to strip it down, sort a few long overdue jobs, and get the body redone.
This is about the best picture i can take to show the micro blisters
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5016.jpg
Seem such a shame to have to get it redone 9 years ago as the paint has held it colour so well!
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5017.jpg
First long overdue job
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5018.jpg
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5019.jpg
Next long overdue job
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5020.jpg
Had to do a couple of repairs to the rear arches
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5021.jpg
Next job on the list was to paint the rear inner arches and re-underseal the floor pan
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5023.jpg
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5022.jpg
Now with rear beam and tanks back in
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5024.jpg
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...oads/r5025.jpg
After a good shift today, its all stripped and just a few jobs to sort out, then ive literally got to roll it over the road to the bodyshop opposite my unit!

Silicone is a Cnut but micro blisters are ysually down to water moisture in the airline or spraying in damp conditions or sometimes if the paint had been packed on without drying between coats if the base coat is solvent Usually only shows up in the colder months as the moisture in the layers of paint expand.. Needs stripping off which is a ball ache x else itl creep back sooner or later

I'm sure I've posted before but that looks brilliant. Are they wolfrace voodoo's? I used to love these wheels back in the day. Looked really smart on a series 1 rst
-
Re: Red R5 GTT Never Ending Project
Yeah they are Voodoo 2's i think, Haz re-did them in black a few years back for me!
-
Re: Red R5 GTT Never Ending Project
The AX spoiler just suits the 5 so much better!
Love the voodoos in black too. Great great looking car :)

Dave, that looks like a GT Tuning spoiler. Very similar to an AX spoiler but a bit more curved. Only mentioning it as I seem to recall you are thinking of putting one on your car ?.

You're correct! It isn't a ax one! I did contemplate it, but decided to put the original one back on.
It's a cool spoiler though and really suits it!
-
Re: Red R5 GTT Never Ending Project
yeah its a gt tuning spoiler, needed alot of work this time as the fibreglass had gone funny on the top edge, but does look good!

Re: Red R5 GTT Never Ending Project
Next it was off to Chris @ EFi parts for some proper mapping, after a few problems on the first session, i did and had some mods done to the ecu. Now running wasted spark, electronic boost solenoid control and overboost protection.
Second mapping session went fine. boost back upto 22psi. Slightly lacking on the bhp side of things due to the engine being low compression and cam not done much above 6200, but in a couple months time after a few run outs at pod, will see std compression, new cylinder head, new cam, tubular manifold and a bigger comp side on the turbo and some more mapping!

Looking good and great work, that's a really clean shell you have there, should last for years now.
