that'll be fun to map! I was down to 1/100th's of a millisecond increments mapping the idle and low load of 2.5L engine last week using 440cc injectors, my 1800cc is twitchy with 500cc, a 1500cc will be very twitch with 850cc.
its looking great though danny :)

Only going by what Ive been told by the mapper he said 750cc to 850cc
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
I think Scoff mentioned 1500cc above!

Ive been working on the 5 for about 3 years,Im hoping to have it finished for the summer. To speed up fabrication Ive got a second 5 with a gordini head on it which is having the manifold, rad, intercooler and pipe run fabricated on. The guy who is mapping my car is Tweeny Rob who worked for Perfect Touch.
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
Danny, the fabrication looks ****ing awesome mate, good work!
I remember speaking to you at Trax 07, **** me, that was ages ago LOL
Still planning on those cheeky 'wheely bars' for the rear of the car ?! :smokin:

Re: Danny's progress pic's
Traction bars if they work on civics in the states might be worth a try;)
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
very nice
those injectors do sound very big for 1600cc, might idle a bit lumpy, all the cossie boys run seimens injectors, and some of them with autronic ecu to,
seimens have a better flow, spray pattern and faster reactions over old bosch gear, and they are the same price to.
-

better spray pattern, as in nice and wide for a 16V engine?
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
Whats your thoughts on injector size and type ?
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
Good to see it's still coming along mate  :)
TweenieRob is a good lad. Met him a few times when he was at P.T, and seemed to know his salts. One of my mates had his 32 Skyline worked on at the start of this year by him, and was chuffed to bits with the finished article, although he wasn't too impressed when the fuel hose nearly popped off at a Spa trackday...but that's another story :D
850cc is surely gonna give a v low duty/be o.t.t for its application? I'm only running 780's (@ 3bar base fuel) in the heave ho, and that gives mid-high 70's duty (thus, still plenty of headroom), running mid 11's afr, on a maxed out E9gt blower.
I'm sure he knows the bobby though.
Look forward to seeing the car on the roads/track next year...hopefully! :)
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
Been a while Dan. Have you got all the proper engine in now? It looks it. Might have to pop down when you're about and have a look at the car again. Not seen you since we picked up the manifold/exhaust.

LEDA are no longer trading and Dave from LEDA now works for GAZ thats why they are nearly the same looking s the LEDA shocks. I am going to try and get some CNC machined billet brackets made and mount them to the tri bars of my cage going to the struts

I see...why not JC5? I think that it is better (more durable atleast). I doubt that JB3 is "bolt-on"...

JB3/JC5 both just bolt on. The strength difference between the two boxes isn't much more than the difference between a good and bad example of each.

it's 84mm stroke, and I think 77mm bore (maybe 78mm)
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
Everything about the JB3 and JC5 is naff when you compare it to a similarly sized Volkswaggen 02J or 02A. JB and JC are both poor excuses for gearboxes when you compare them to the rest of the field.

I had the box built by CTM it has been shot peened and super finished gear set and its got a gripper diff, If this does let go I will look at somthing else. I have spent alot of money already and if I keep up grading every so many months I will never finish my 5
All I want is to drive my 5:D

Re: Danny's progress pic's
Yeah, Im sure you've made it stronger. I was replying more so to the questions regarding how much stronger (or not) the JC is.

Neither am I mate which is why I bought a 2nd hand volkswaggen gearbox and fitted it myself. its cost me about 500.00 all in and a bit of graft making it fit. I'm sure yours will work fine also, just a different way of tacking the same problem ;)

That could be on it's first use!!
People with only 250bhp ish sometimes eat though a few of them a year or season.
You're evidently expecting a LOT more power then that.

Re: Danny's progress pic's
the spending not slowing down then :D
re the luminition, it was just some bits I had lying around in the shed, you only need the optical sensor bit, not any of the electronic bits. I machined my own 'chopper' - a disk with a mounting flange, and a bit cut out to make the sensor work.

mmmm injector dynamics eh, well loved they are in the honda world, the only 8sec street honda runs those, but 8 of them.

should be fine mapping those, from what ive read they have a very fast recovery rate, the tuners love em`

A few of my mates are using them on K20's with turbo's and said they been easy to map and have had no idling probs

i know people on 1600cc with no issues. :)
in fact we will prob be using them within 12 months, were on 750`s now
and at 80% cycle, then again, were cheap prob just bump fuel pressure lol

Re: Danny's progress pic's
why have you blanked the back of the rad off, wont this restrict airflow when moving (i.e. when the fans arent running)?
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
I can't see the pic's mate

Re: Danny's progress pic's

Im guessing when moving there will be a greater volume of cold air hitting the face of the rad and channeling through the fans.
When you look at most cars the cowling does cover most of the back side of the rad.
I will ask the fabricator, and let you know why.

Re: Danny's progress pic's
I think what your saying is right Dan but surely surely airflow through the rad is the optimum way of reducing water temps on the move.
Pretty much every car radiator is opened backed in the sense of what youve had done.
Be interesting to see how well it works in the way you have it though :)
Btw, that radiator is pure sex :cooter: :agree:
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
So when's it going to run then, Dan? This year is catching you up mate:p

this is how i have my cowling on the backside too:agree: im yet to see if this will affect the temp as the cars not been out yet.

Spoke to the fabricator today the reason for the shroud is to stop hot spots, this is done by drawing air from the hole surface of the rad.
If it didn't have a shroud the heat would only be drawn from the surface in front of the fan. He also said when Iam moving along the air will flow through the fans.
The other thing with my rad is that it is a dual cooling rad. It has a baffle on the end tank which channels the coolant across the top half and then cools again across the bottom half.

The rad is mounted under the boot floor.
Should be running in a month or so,can't wait to hear what it sounds like.

Re: Danny's progress pic's
i know im the last 1 that should b saying this but
how often do you think "i wish i never started this, sooooooooo much ****ing money gone"
i do it all the time, if i had the chance to do it over again i know i wouldnt.
you only have to look at what else you could have bought and enjoyed instead of spending and working on, then when its done its worth about 10% of what its cost you.
i could have bought a porsche 911 turbo and had change or a 911 gt3 or a ferrari 355 convertible for what my 5 has cost me so far, and i wouldnt have to even open the bonnet on 1 of them, just get in and drive it.
you must be in the same boat as me?
:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
oh but congrats on the build so far lol

I won't be using the 5 as a daily driver so should be ok. The angle of the rad and air intake should stop the odd stone from hitting the fans.
-

Fair enough, so this beast your building is gunna be a track toy then, coolio, should be interesting to see what it can do
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
track!?!
if that was my car it would get driven behind a road sweeper, and licked clean every night! attention to detail is out of this world, and i'm very very impressed!!

Really great work! What sort of pump is that and are you running the pipes in side or out side the body!? Chris
-
Re: Danny's progress pic's
You can see the pump in the last pic it mounts on the side of the rad end tank.
The braided hose and fittings are AN -20 and will run under a false floor on the passengers side

Re: Danny's progress pic's
Hi Danny, top work as per usual! I do have a question though. Is your engine and box using solid mounts, as with the rigid boost pipe run, I'm concerned that the pipes will be stressed as the engine moves?
I know that the pipe connectors that you are using do allow for a little bit of play but, if the engine rocks back and forth under accel and decel, will this be enough?
-

The engine has been braced to the sub frame.
