2012 Rolling road day @ EFI-PARTS 23rd sept (RESULTS & PICS PAGE 6)

hi guys hope all is well and your projects are coming together nicely?

right then after a bit of discussion with mr scoff im delighted to announce that this years big RTOC rolling road event will be held at EFI-PARTS in Runcorn.
As most of you lot know this place is owned and ran by none other than our own "scoff" and he now has the use of what is known in the trade to be one of the most accurate set of rollers around "superflow".

we are still in very early days yet and a long time off so more will be added to this thread in due course and im sure scoff will be along to outline start times/prices etc etc. I dont think there will be any need for a deposit to secure the venue, but for all people who intend to run ill br printing up a few sheets like at the last rr day to put your details and also car details/spec etc.

im going to do my best to get this magazine featured again :)

Depending on numbers will bring something along to run be that the vx220 going up this week for some scoff loving or the new audi s3 lump I am half way through installing in a vx220 or the sr20det track beast :coffee:

I don't remember that! Actually, was it you who was stuck outside the hotel when we got back? I remember some bloke getting a bit upset with us taking over the dance floor, and windmilling his way through the lot of us, before getting chucked out. And I remember Sparkie getting completely smashed on two pints before we even left the hotel bar, and Mike ending up back at Rach's hotel (that was when 'it' became public).

I think that was the night I met Jaffa as well. He was in the hotel reception having a barney on the phone, saying he was going out for the night with Bill and Tom, and he'd be back tomorrow. Tom and me looked at each other and thought: Who the feck is that? :laugh:

Don't laugh at me, maybe a silly question but will running a different size wheel and tyre effect the bhp result? I know speedo does get affected just wondered on a r/r.

Very slight, maybe a % or 2. The size of the wheel/tyre package doesn't affect much, the dyno is smart enough to deal with that. Getting good grip is more important:

If possible, guys should avoid arriving with track type tyres on, R888 and other soft compounds. They don't grip well on the rollers. Normal tyres with plenty of air are what you want. The less camber and toe in/out, the better too. :)

It is however an infamous rtoc list, as long as my engine is still in one piece after pod on the 2nd i should still be running.

Maybe Ashy has a point regards pre-booking/pre-paying for slots.;)

If people are worried they might miss out they could send a £10 deposit and I could keep a list of those names. If we think its worthwhile I'll pop up some details for that. :)

Looks like I will be bringing a VX220 but to get ECU work done so alas not going to be running anything. The tfsi conversion is not finished either

Could drag my friend along in the garret build vx220 but vx's are a pain to strap down and may be a bit busy all in all. should be a good solid 400bhp mind ;)

My 5 hadnt been feeling that fast since i rebuilt it, definetly getting through the gears quickly but didnt seem to pull like it used too, but today confirmed it for me, anihalated a motorbike, stopped at the next lights and his exact words were "F**king hell thats a quick little thing, its a F**king screamer* lol Cant wait to see what figures ive got, its only 17-18psi at the moment so want to make sure im clear of det before upping boost more on the rollers.

Me and royz will be coming from Stockport mate, i'll be in the cab and he'll be in his 5. We''ll hop on the m60 and join the m62 at junction 11.

I think you've answered your own question there.

The event was booked to be a Sunday since February.

RTOC 1 in 3 - It's been that way for a long time. It would be great to see a change in the pattern but what evidence is there for that happening?

Right then, lets get the ball rolling. For everyone who is coming from the South of the country / Midlands i presume most people are going to be travelling on the M6 at some point.

Im planning to arrange a meet at HILTON PARK SERVICES on the m6. Northbound between jct 10a and 11. Meeting between 9 / 9.15am

Myself and Nick K will be there, i know Turbo ted and the West London massive are also interested in a convoy to Scoffs

Please put your name down if you want to join us for the last 70 mile convoy to Scoffs. Its 1hr 15mins so we would be leaving Hilton park at 9.30am on Sunday

looks like the rule of three has hit the east end massive, would love to go ,but as fate would have it a free weekend has come up on malcs ramps so its an ideal time slot to get the new clutch in and drive shafts on , 02m gearbox/ selector system in, moving me a few steps closer to completion, shame that its taken so long to get the transmission side of things completed this year, but will make up for it next year, sorry rtoc'ers, hope those still attending have a cracking day:cool:

Problems!

Late on yesterday the dyno picked up a problem with it's brake regulation, working intermittent. I stopped late last night to pull it to bits to see what was going on. Long story short, one duff IGBT and no where today with them in stock for collection :rolleyes: I ordered a couple for Sat morning delivery so I won't know if the dyno going to be operational until mid day Saturday !!

So people, PLEASE check back here tomorrow afternoon for an update. If I can't fix the dyno then we're screwed and we'll have to cancel or postpone.

This is especially annoying for me because it's happened twice before. 1st time I repaired it, the second time the dyno company sent me a whole new module assuring me it shouldn't happen again. 6 months on and it's happened again.

Please check back tomorrow for an update before you set off guys.

I'm setting off a 6am Andy, about 3hr drive for me

I'm going to have to leave earlyish in afternoon so thought make most of the day :D

I have a 3hr drive to, never had the gt on the rollers so looking forwards to it.

Well after cleaning my car doing a few bits n bobs! It was ready for tomorrow, took her out for a blast down the m60 and disaster! The rad started leaking again!!! Aghh so will have to come in the van now!! Really gutted! :( still attending tho! I've tried rad weld to no joy and Royz had a spare rad but that had a hole in it too!

Anyway still coming might get the van rolling roaded! Ha :cry:

true to form i won't be there. :(

mates car i repaired to go on rollers blew the bottom end less than 7 days after a rebuild.

my tow car that i planned to drive up instead with snapped its cambelt and destroyed the valve train a week ago.

the wifes car i've been driving around to find a replacement tow car with decided to start misfiring whilst in manchester today. 60mile drive along A roads on 2-3/3-4 cylinders aint fun - coil pack failure.

So I had to change my wheels today back to some old 15" I have god what a difference I have 16s normally but I think I'm happier with the 15" less bumpy not so Much noise.. See how they go tomorrow on the way to scoffs

Good day today,not happy about the rain on the way home though.:cry:couple of 5s over 200bhp and then there was blocky's vr6 powered turbo Nutter ******* Clio,400+:agree:bhp.awesome.

Good day at efi and a great host :agree: great drive there with the guys crap drive back in the rain did a 360 on a island hate the 15s lol think with my tracking set for 16s made them dangerous in the wet :eek: woke me up though :) now know were I wan tobe 200bhp is were I want it successful day with parts thanks to mark for the cam (interested to see what bhp) thanks to nick for the unskimmed head ready for some light gas flowing and haz for the dump valve :) that's it for me this year now the 5s going into hibernation ready for rebuild bit of a tidy up and then ready for blyton!!

Will be on here for help though and tips rebuilding the engine..

Heres my afr/boost chart, boost spikes to 18.7 initially then levels to 17psi, max torque was at 18.7psi spike at 4700 and max hp was at 17psi 5700rpm

Heres my hp/torque curve 201bhp :D just made it :D torque was 198.4lbsft

Just got back, I'm in agony with my back, 6 hrs driving in those buckets of mine.

I had a great day and met some nice people. I'm also happy with my result, 170bhp 239lbs :)

gutted i couldnt make it guys, lack of £££ this month meant i just couldnt justify it, On a good note i took my carb off my ready ready to rebuild/clean it, hopefully to get rid of the rich idle issue.

Just got in after an eventfull journy home, my brothers headgasket went:cry: was like something from the red arrows:laugh:

Aside from that It was a good day, good to see a few people i haven't seen for a while, i was relativly happy with how my car performed.

My print out says 201hp 189ft at 27psi! Lol the boost for the rollers was being measured at the carb top for my runs, was more like 23/24 manifold, scoff also had to put lot of load on the rollers as when it came on boost it was spinning up, it did make 210hp on one of the runs but it wasn't a smooth curve due to the wheel spin so i wasn't happy with it.

I need a larger downpipe and more boost:devil:

My motor is low comp hence the need for more boost, and my downpipe is standard.

Other than a blown boost hose 30 miles from home she ran faultlessly. Even had a little play with an Audi RS 3:smokin:

Yeah the b18s make good torque, great for on track, boost was at just over a bar 15.7 psi :)

Had a quality time. Blew a head gasket on the way home. Ill whip the head off I'm a few days and see what's occurring. But thanks to scoff, blocky and Haz.

nothing special with mine really, i think the raceland manifold makes a huge hp difference, my engine really responded well to it. recenetly rebuilt with std internals, 2nd hand very worn piper 285 lol just threw it in anyway. turbos a t28ish i think a friend built and balanced it for me and just said itll go well without much info.
took alot of time adjusting the cam timing. alot of trial and error, and a fmic thats about it really.
Even made up my £30 transmech clutch is still holding well :D wish i could of seen how the others got on.

Long pull in 5th. Didn't lean out or overheat. To be honest, I set the boost up today via the actuator rod. When I went out id give it miles to much, flew upto 30 psi. Although I came off straight away I feel thats where the damage was done. Cause the car fuels mint all the time. Plus I had my eye on it.

What a excellent day well done to Scoff and all involved in running the day. :agree:

Saw some excellent cars and new and old faces. :)

I didn't go on the rollers but managnegt to clock up close to 500 miles in one day and no fail. :smokin:

Since mine has sprung a leek I've decided to relocate mine, put some air intakes into the side polly windows with hoses running into an air box! Will allow for a larger alloy rad plus loads of room for a large fmic!

Good turn out really, great to meet up again, pissed off not able to run but :sad2: Time for a rebuild!

Tony (Walker), that to me (looking at your graphs), looks like a GTT that's running in it's prime. 200bhp, 200 lb/ft, less than 20psi, steady AFR, less than 7krpm limit. For me this is where the sweet spot is for a road-going 5. If it's reliable, that's where I'd leave it. Awesome :agree:

If you could get that max torque to plateau for just a little while at the top, that would be the only improvement.

That's me however. What are your plans with it?

To be fair he was pretty sound so I wasn't all that bothered, I get pulled over every time I drive my raider! Lol must be something to do with the way I look!:laugh:

Thanks for the comments, i did alot of trial and error with the cam timing, i had no more time to adjust it again(already done it about 4 times lol)
i think i can probably retard it 2-3degrees and it would be perfect. it was coming on cam at 5000 and i advanced it around 8 degrees. I think this would keep the torque there a few 100rpms more :D
Other than that i have no more plans for it really, its for track use and i was more than happy with the results, looking at most other figures i was expecting around 180

The funny part for me nick and his dad was when we went for Mcds and steer from the rear was in front and he gave it some wellie sh1t that thing moves and sounds sweet he was gone that fast we lost him and ended up on some massive bridge lol had to use the Tom Tom to get back to scoffs :-) still didn't get to Mcds

I go to Anfield quite a lot and this was my first rtoc meet. Had a really good time and met some good people offering help :)

Anyway after that result I'm glad I got rid of the tickets :dearme:

Yes factory limit. It seems that most cams for the 21 are designed to keep the std rev limit so the std ecu can be chipped. There's only a couple using standalone, and only a couple using a vernier. The tuning scene is very behind the gtt world. 21's are limited to 18-21psi as they crack liners but I got the impression that most owners didn't realise that anything above 1bar can't be read by the ecu's 2bar map sensor :rolleyes:
After doing some research with scoff, the 'powerful' Europacup cars ran 1.5bar on the equivelant of a gtt piper 300 making just over 300bhp. There's more to be had from them but since there's about 40 cars left in the uk with most owners just trying to keep them on the road, tuning hasn't really progressed. I'd started collecting bits for a big spec version but as they fetch poor money for the car I've stopped spending on it as I'd only sell it at a big loss once the 11's finished. Even Clee has no interested in the one he's selling and that's very cheap! Shame :(

it was you i was on about :laugh: nah to be fair there are some very clued up people on there but just appears that some info isnt shared or enough trial and error hasn't been done. i'm just bitter that they are worth so little so stopped spending on mine. i may carry on if the 5 or van sells but think i'm stuck with it forever lol. fair play to dave for persuing his for so long.

21s are a pop compared to the GTA knowledge base .....

No one has really pushed the cars Haz. Dave and Andy are trying now. Can't wait for their results :D

Depending on phase, 175bhp @13.7 iirc.

i know they haven't been pushed that far, after all they are more of a 'family' car than the gtt, i just expected people to have played more but they arent exactly slow in std form. like i say, if something sells then i may persue the build as no one seems interested in the car as it is. i did enjoy driving it and trying to sort some swaps with ollie to get it back on the road in standardish form which may spur some motivation but in the back of my mind its time and funds away from the 11, as with my other projects. maybe i just build stuff people dont want lol.

My favorite picture of my car is the one where Scoff is quietly giggling at the fact my boost pressure was reading at 27psi:eek: and I still feel the need to point out that it was measured at the carb top :ashamed:

Also GT josh is called Josh Reeves, he is my bro but we have different surnames..........but that's another story!

Once again thanks to all involved in the organization and running of the day, there really were some fantastic cars on show on the day, a real credit to the owners and also a credit to rtoc that we have such a good base of knowledge and excellent members to be able to make these glorified French rot box's so awesome! :agree:
