My winter project

Well since I am now fed up with the C1J I am going F7P turbo.
I will add pictures & progress reports here as I go, I will attempt to give a good detailed report as well :cooter:

Parts bought so far:

F7P engines x2, should be able to make one good engine from all the parts.

Aim is to rebuild & turbo the F7P, hopefully it will be more relaible, less stressed & put out the same power as my old GTT (maybe a little more). The hope to get it up & running for frog of the pod 2011 (assuming we have one next year :cooter:)
I will try to use my T3/25 for a while & then prob end up with a 200sx or GtiR turbo.
Having not even looked at a F7 engine I hope I can do it :scared:, should be ok, I rebuilt my old Rover 220 engine & put that on DTA & limped it to Track n Road to be mapped a few years ago, lol.

If you can build one engine your can build pretty much most others, all are the same principal... Good look with the project mate, looking forward to updates..:agree:

Not this last one but the one I had in my old car should have been around 220bhp ( going on my 12.78 SQM @ 108MPH) It was RR at track n Road at 209bhp/207lbft @ 20 psi on low comp pistons & then I added some Scoff spec forgies & ran 24 psi... never went back though but did the 12.78 on that spec..

p.s, id give a t04e a try on that size motor, youcan get the cheapy chinease ones for £100 new! make great power those turbos, and there really easy to get hold of/spares for. ran our 1st 10 on one of those with 1590cc, forget t25`s :wasntme:

Big turbo ftw, more hp less boost.Probabley be a bit kinder on the old gearbag. As well coming in higher up the rev range.

Can I use the discs or anything else off the car for my GT Turbo, are they wider track like the clio?

take what you need off it and slap it back on ebay, some people are backwards and will give you more money for a 19 with no engine than they will for one with mot and tax...

steve you can sell me the front shocks and lowering springs there's some money back for you as i need a set for my 19v track car that i kept was going to use it for my conversion but i had to much fun on the track at mallory going sideways in the rain:D

Not sure if it's worth breaking or trying to sell as a rolling shell, the OZ rims must be worth something, but then that only really leaves the suspension thats worth anything & the car won't be rolling then either....

whats the market like for spares? the gtt's flooded, you can't break an oe one like back in the day and make any money.. perhaps people are waiting for a few parts off a 19 16valver, give it a week or 2 to drum up some interest on ebay etc and get it broken and gone asap..

keep the hubs mate,they have bigger bearings in them ,and will be better for cornering etc with the extra weight of the f7p in the front:)

or give them to me, i could do with a few spares;)

keep the exhaust manifold also ,the mounting plate could be useful for building a log/tubby for your turbo,unless you intend on cutting the bulkhead away to squeeze in that t04e ;)

Valver has it already matey, just need to know if I need the ally PAS bracket that attaches to the mount or not to help mount the alternator...

We will have a look at the bits you have tomorrow, doubt you will need that bracket, I think you will need the lower alt bracket and use the gtt adjuster arm for the top sort

on the b18ft the alt adjuster arm fowls on the crossmember dont think its the same but may want to have a trusty grinder handy:D

I had to the same when i did the F4r conversion. My modified alt bracket below

i cut the front edge off so it was about half as thick gave plenty of mm@'s clearance:D

I just can't believe my luck at the moment, got the engine out ok (thanks James) , spot some rust on the back so take the starter off to get a closer look, feck me the cnut has a cracked block :mad: not fecking happy at all.

I know how you feel as do alot of fellow r5 owners. When the chips are down the r5 mishaps seem to be relentless. Hang in there buddy and it will all come good in the end. :)

At least I spotted it before I dropped the lump in, I reckon I'd have been forever chasing a coolant leak...

Defo worht taking a look at that engine in the link I gave you ok it says needs hydrolic lifters, you have a few spares now so could make 1 decent engine out of the 2:agree:

The speed that guy works is unreal he's just constantly at it. A few weeks ago it was just 2 old blocks now it's all in and pretty close to be wired. I hope you have deep pockets steve as it doesn't look cheap.

Depends which way you go, you can go standard or piston skim, R21 injectors & MAP sensor 0.5 bar boost for a few hundred quid, or otherwise it's about £1300 with a high boost chip & forgies/full build, add another £1000 for aftermarket ecu...

Going to be picking up another engine today, will be whipping out the pistons & sending them up to Scoff to dish them for me & then run a low boost chip I picked up off Shackal.
Also picked up a big brake kit, swapped it for my old 13" speedlines & the oil feed with filter as I need a new one anyway for the F7 build :)
Also spoke to CR Turbo & they can stick a .64 rear end on my turbo for £100 so that will save me a bit for now as well.

Picked up some dark greens now as well ready for high boost :)

Hope to have it running in a couple of months, need to strip the other engine & hone it or bore it depends if I go forged or just dish some standard pistons, still undecided about that.
The head needs a refresh as well yet & I need to get the block drilled & tapped for the drain plus I need to get a hose made up but will leave that till get the engine in so I know how much I need to keep it away from the manifold & turbo.
Downpipe may be my stumbling block for a while as well....
Oh, & I only have 2 engines, well..... one half decent one :cooter:

Pistons out of the 19 now ready to send off to Scoff to be dished :)
Will try to collect a few more smaller parts over the next few weeks but I may have to slow down on the bigger stuff till after christmas now :disagree:
Will strip the clio lump down over the next few weeks & see if the crank & block are ok in that.. fingers crossed !

Small update, hope to get a CR of about 8.5:1 from skimming the tops of the pistons after speaking to Chris, also on the lookout for a bigger turbo as well, not sure whether to try a 200sx, GTiR or get one custom made by CR...something the size of a GT28RS or 2871 maybe ?

Once the pistons come back I'll order some rings, cambelt etc ready to start the build. Then strip the clio lump down & hone it ready for the fresh rings & drill the block for the oil return.

I am suprised you haven't got those bit's already hanging about matey ready for the rebuild that's unlike you.

That's good news with the compression on the OE pistons being skimmed aswell:agree:

Yeah, I've been umming & arring over the CR & pistons really so held off on a few parts.
Should be able to start the build soon, will strip the other block & take it to the machine shop to get cleaned up & lightly honed, will also get them to drill the oil return at the same time.

Update as I had some parts turn up today.
Volvo alt brackets, 200SX T28 & pistons. :smokin:

Nah not yet, been in all day bored, had a fiddle with the T28 & a fumble with the pistons...... :cooter:

Clio 16v inlet is slightly shorter on the throttle body end than r19 and Williams.
The throttle bodies are interchangeable and slightly different how the airfilter mounts, Clio bolts on, r19 has a hose.

I'm totally pissed off now, really feel like giving up on the whole thing.
Stripped the 2nd engine today only to find it's essentially scrap as well
I nearly fecking :cry: I tell you, how much bad luck can I have :sad2:
I've saved the cams & lifters & a few little bits from the engine but the head is shot & the bores on the block are scored so no good for standard pistons at all :crap:

Yep, a C1J & 2 **** F7P's, really fed up.
If the block only needed a hone ( the one I have will be ok with an overbore) I have a spare head, cams, crank & pistons & rods etc.
Or I bite the bullet & buy forgies & overbore the block I have..
Not sure if someones trying to tell me something though, maybe I should quit before I spend any more on it :sad2:

If you could find a block thats decent enough think you'll be back on track, prob the cheapest and easiest solution.

Know how you feel though mate, its a right piss take when everyhting you buy ends up being kanckered and it feels like it always hits deadend.

Looking at the head something deffinately hit it but could it of been damage from a previous blow-up.

Is the piston marked on the outer edge, bit hard to tell in the pic? Looks abit like what ever hit the head has caught the piston abit (poss) which in turn has marked bores alittle

Bores aren't that bad but I don't want to chance it smoking if they don't come out with a hone, which I don't think one will as I could feel a couple of lines with my finger nail.
I will take a closer look tomorrow, TBH I was so pee'd off earlier I just stripped everything down off it & shoved it under the sheeting again.
Robbie may have a block for me to use now as well which is a bonus.

Mark, there are more piccies in the F7P folder in my profile.

Thats cool, maybe worth giving it a hone and seeing if they did come out. If not then as you say Rob has a spare for you so least you got a back up then.

But I can go 83 or 84mm IIRC, standard is 82 I think

Will try to pick up a block off Robbie & also have one in Oxford for £15 so hopefully one or both will be good !
Also ordered some rings, bearings & bottom end gasket kit from Mike so I can finally get on with the build once I have had the block cleaned & the oil drain drilled at the machine shop...

Little update as I picked some parts up off Mike, also thanks to Robbie for the block, fingers crossed I have enough parts now to build a good block up..

Ordered a new set of core plugs today, also going to go out & stick the bare block into the car to try to work out if I can chop the 2 mounts I have to make a GTX wannabe since the GTX is now NLA & like rocking horse poo to find....

Not sure if I should give the bores a glaze bust with a honing tool myself or not, is it something you can mess up ?
Machine shop will charge me around £160 to clean the block, hone the bores, drill the oil return & build the bottom end with the parts I've bought.....

Steve, I can pop over on my lunch break in a mo if you want a hand getting a block into the car :)

Personally I'd let them do the de-glaze, £160 isn't a bad price at all really concidering the work they'll be doing.

Also saves you buying a tool you'll realistically only use a few times, it's not difficult to do but can get messy with all the oil flying about which you'd then have to clean up

Well James & I did a dummy build on the F7P earlier (cheers buddy) I think the GTT mount will be useable once drilled out & chopped down a bit on the left hand side, may have to be shimmed out, couldn't tell as I had a stud in the way on the block :wasntme: Hieght looked about right.

Looked good seeing it all in place not much space at the back for the turbo downpipe / elbow but bonnet closes no probs.

Makes me think should I go clio route and do the same but in a xeros grey clio or williams. Need you to finish yours before I decide :)

Little bit of progress from the shed today :D
Honed the bores, re-fitted the oil squirters & crank with new main bearings. Need to get a 1/2" NPT tap for the oil drain into block & then fit new rings & big end bearings & the bottom end is pretty much built.
Been using this to assemble the bottom end, excellent stuff & protects the bearings better than just oil on 1st start up :agree:
Also drilled the GTT engine bracket to fit the F7P, it's not pretty as I had to drill a couple of holes (drilled the wrong place on one :ashamed::crap:) so I will use this as a template & do another one for the final build. At the mo it's about 5-6mm out as it leans a little, just needs a small tweak & it's there.

Slowly making progress, oil drain now fitted, just need to fit the rings & then I can drop the pistons in & thats the bottom end sorted :)

Fitted the rings, dropped the pistons in & torqued the bottom end today, just need to fit the oil pick up & the sump & then bottom end is ready to seal up :)

Looking the good matey, good to see progress is now going in the right direction, can't wait to see this finished.

So what you doing online get back out there and finish that bottom end of:laugh: your getting as slow as Phil :laugh:

Seal the sump of, and cover the top of the block and job done then await yout top end parts:D

Cheers Rob, it's bloody hard to keep things clean in a shed :crap: but I think I managed it ok.

A little more progress today.
1st I fed the loom into the car via the same route as the OE loom, hopefully I can use all the internal looms or fuse box. This way at least I have kept the OE loom in place in case it needs to go back to C1J & I haqve a spare loom I can chop the plug off :)
2nd I fitted the oil pick up & sealed the sump up. I've plonked the head on top to keep it from getting bits in the bores.

I actually wish I had an N/A lump to drop in right now, just to get on the road :wasntme:

To be honest Steve, keep up the good work you have done well to get so far with the bad start, think about it though where your at now your not far from being complete once engine together. It's just the time and money as it always is with these things, patience though once it's done should be awesome, once engine done you only have the wiring and the exhaust downpipe to fabricate.

top work steve some good progress made after a few small set backs you had along the way but hopefully all is ticking along smoothly now :agree::agree:

Yeah, not much then, lol.
I will make a downpipe & then maybe get one copied in stainless.
Now the wiring is all in the car I hope it will at least be easier to sort, pop round later & i'll show you the wiring :)

:laugh: the wireing was what took me so long to get it running :ashamed: and an ECU that wasn't demobilised properly. Engine was in with a couple of weeks:agree:

I've worked out why I've had a little trouble, just realised the wiring is for the clio in the translated version in the F7P section. It's a bit different to the R19 :rolleyes:
Think I've done the wiring now so fingers crossed it will be ok. I'm hoping the clio ECU is ok to use or I'll have to sell it & get my 19 one mapped, got a feeling it's not going to work though now I've seen how different the wiring is....:crap:

Slowly, slowly at the moment with things going on & lack of funds. I've managed to put the waterpump on though, just need to pick the cambelt & headset up off Mike next week & that should be the engine built up ready to drop in.
Fingers crossed I have all the parts & nuts & bolts :crap:

I totally re-wired the loom the other night so I can use the Clio ecu. Hope to have the engine finished & ready to drop in next week, fingers crossed I can find everything :scared:

Just waiting for a torque angle gauge so I can tighten down the last bit on the headgasket.
Whoevers idea it was to do 20NM, 45nm, leave 3 mins, undo all, 25nm & then 107 degrees is a PITA :rolleyes:

A little bit of test fitting today after checking the timing.. glad I did as the cover I was using wouldn't have let me fit a shorter belt !

Steve , looking good matey, progress coming quickly now, you been able to work out the alt belt size yet that you need?

Build is starting to do my nut in now, keep finding silly little bits I still need before I can drop it in.. & fab a downpipe..
Gtt oil filter, oil cooler, injector refurb kit, 8mm fuel line, fuel pump fitting kit, alt belt, oil & water feeds for the turbo, manifold studs, & a few odd nuts & bolts...

Then I have to hope the car actually works !!
All in all it doesn't owe me alot though as I made some money on the R19 in the end so I'm pleased with that.
Hope to have it up & running before the end of MArch :scared:

personally if you cant get an agle gauge, just do 90 and a lil bit for good measure lol.

Small update as I've ordered an oil cooler, oil filter, oil drain, oil feed pipe & -4 fittings, fitted spax rear shocks & built up the lump ready to drop in, I'm going to try it without the inlet manifold 1st & see if that leaves me enough room to fit the rad, if not the slam panel may have to go :cooter:
Just leaves me:
Oil ffed adapter
coolant banjo's
coolant hose
oil pressure gauge
044 fitting kit & fit fuel pump
51mm intercooler pipework
some heatshield mat to protect the brake lines
fab a downpipe.

So not much left then :rolleyes:

All the water and oil return off the volvo t2 fit the t28 see if someone like mark has one knocking about. Looks good tho matey nearly there, must be getting excited now bud

Took a day off today to get a little more done to the car.
Made up my oil feed, had a look at the oil return, need to fit the starter to see if my current set up will clear it but the hose is long enough. Also fitted my other rear shock after picking up the new bolt off James last night.
Will attempt to fit the engine in this week I think.

I will prob end up rotating it slightly but TBH it doesn't touch the hole.
Thanks for the offer but I have the drain, it's the adapter in the oil feed & water banjo's I'm having trouble with.

The car is SORN & I'm out of cash so looks like May before it's on the road :(
Still need to drop the engine in, fit everything up, fit the fuel pump & make the downpipe up, so loads to do :sad2:

I can give you a hand getting the engine in this week or next week if you want at least that's one less thing to do and another step towards completion:D

Ok, been flat out with work & family commitments lately so not alot was done, really need to pull my finger out this week though as I'm moving on the 6th May :eek:
Ordered some of the smaller parts needed like manifold nuts etc & managed to pick up a downpipe & new GTX engine mount as well so that will speed things up.
Still need the compressor adapters for the turbo, may have to try to bodge the standard sx ones for now so I can move the car.
Also going to need some hose for the waterways on the turbo & an aux belt.
Prob find a few other little bits as well once the engine goes in...
Looking forward to getting it on the road though :burnrubber:

Engine is now in, thanks to a helping hand from my buddy John (& James turning up as I was finished :cooter: )
A couple of niggly bits to do, may have to change the oil return as I can't fit the starter, doh ! Fuel hose to fit, a couple of live wires & then on to the fuel pump, I seem to have got 2 fitting kits for the same end :scratch: also need a shorter alt belt.

Bloody good work mate pleased the lumps in now I think now it's in it will give you alot more motivation to get it finished and back on the road mate again cracking work keep going :agree:

Steve don't forget to sort out the brake servo pipe via a one way valve and to the inlet plenium. Don't want no brakes on that first run

Still got a long list & since I'm moving this weekend looks like it will be a while till I finish it, looks like I will owe Phil a beer (non alcoholic of course ;))

Still need:

one way valve for brake servo (cheers for the reminder James)
51mm pipework for the intercooler
throttlebody gasket
compressor adapter
shorter aux belt
fit downpipe
get an adapter for the fuel pump
new number plates (got dodgy french pressed metal ones at mo)
sort the water hoses, seems I'm missing the metal water hose :crap:
10mm water hose for turbo
fit rad (means chopping the front panel out but I allways knew that)
join positive wires & fuel pump feed
fill gearbox with oil
add more oil in engine
get some heatshield for the brake lines
get a smaller starter or change oil drain :crap:

Still, at least the engine is in now.

That list will soon be gone mate just keep cracking on again it's really taking shape now top work I started with 193 jobs on mine in June last year and thought it would never be how I wanted it but now I'm down to 4 left on the list and they should be done tomorrow keep it going mate :agree:

Got a Pace oversize rad off Mike last night... but it doesn't fit :crap:
Had a play around with the valver rad & got that to fit, put the grill & bumper on & it looked like a car again :agree: after going out in Turbo teds last night @ 4psi I can't wait to get mine going:burnrubber:

Small update, went ot the car today hoping to start it... forgot the bloody keys so that fixed that.
Fitted 044 pump, fuel lines, exhaust chopped & fitted as are most of the intercooler pipes, also fitted hoses to the turbo & fitted the starter, just a few little bits left.
Wire in lives & fuel pump feed
take some nuts for the turbo down pipe :rolleyes:
fit coolant hoses & last intercooler pipes..
Prob a few niggly bits as well left but pretty much there now.

Looking good matey. With regards to the pump wiring the small connection on the loom goes to the big one on the pump;)

Feck wish my exhaust was that easy I need to cut about 6"s of and weld 2 stud flange on it.

Unless someone fancies a swapping my powerflow for a k-tec sidey:D

James, all I did was chop it & it slides into the sidey :D

OK, bit of a set back today, seems the engine is locked, looks like it's gearbox or flywheel/clutch related as I split the box away a bit & managed to turn the engine with a little noise there :crap: Also the box isn't engaging when I put it into gear as it doesn't lock on the engine, both wheels spin in opposite directions so the diff works but no drive :scratch: no box oil wouldn't do this would it?
So engine & box got to come back out, Nat day is deffo off now :cry: just going to concentrate on getting it done for Pod.
Another thing I found was that my high boost chip won't work either, but my 19 ecu & when I put the low boost chip back into the phase 1 it will work, well prime the pump & dash lights on anyway, not got as far as seeing if the ******* will start yet :mad:

funny you should say that im having problems to my car is minus a engine and gearbox at the moment as the clio 182 gearbox is gone already just from running the engine in:crap:

Think we may need some adapters made up for fitting a stronger box !

I may run a valver box with clocks as well as my box is shot anyway..

Got mine priming off the ecu, not sure I have a spark yet as I can crank the bugger. James should know sooner than me as he's nearly done now.

Mine primes of the Phase 1 High boost ECU also, and she cranks on the starter, I just need to get the ******* to spark which I think is down to 1 of the 3 wires I have left to do, cheers Steve for advising me last night on the wiring and finding that 2 of my clio relays were fecked.

steve is it a 215mm flywheel on the lump? if so have you changed the starter as the teeth are different, just trying to think of anything it may be.:scratch: or flywheel catching on something iirc there is a dowel on the box that needs moving when changing from 200mm to 215mm flywheel can anyone confirm this?

it may even be a threaded stud that needs removing cant really remember:ashamed:

I think the f7p is 200mm and yeah the gtt locating dowel needs to come out for it to engage well mine did.

Ok, today took engine out, split it, found the problem... stupid dowel on the back of the gearbox :scratch: can't believe it would lock the engine but it was.
Engine back in, wired up just need to charge the battery as my pack was flat as well, but car cranks ok. Need to get a throttlebody adapter plate, split the drivers ball joint & pop the driveshaft onto the box, crank it for a bit longer to get the oil pump primed & then fire it up & watch it smoke like a biatch..

The offending 'dowel' & the engine split, hopefully for the last time....

Well it ran today... briefly before I had to pull the battery lead off :wasntme:
Didn't have any hoses on the inlet nor the throttlebody attached to the inlet so it revved a bit high :dearme:, scared the :crap: out of me. Luckily it wasn't bouncing off the rev limiter, I reckon about 3500rpms for a second or 2 so hopefully no damage done :ashamed:
Will be fitting all the hoses on now I know it runs :laugh:

The car goes surprisingly well in N/A form, nippy & likes to rev, sadly though it hasn't changed my mind about this car & it is up for sale......... can't wait to get on with the 19 project now though !
