Mark, the car looks awesome buddy :agree:
I'm liking the idea of the dash conversion, that looks good.
Is it Ashy who has squeezed the 172 dash into his car?
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Very, VERY nice mate! Its astonishing what level of finnish people can achieve with these cars, you have done an immence job :agree:
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
OMG how good is that. Funny really as I was saying to my bro as I started to read the thread that Tungy is the best colour. By the end of the thread he was laughing as I have a poster of this car on my wall at work and i didnt realise it was the same car!!!
Top marks.

I was just gonna ask the same thing!!! What happened at snett?

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
was a mates old lancer, was an interesting beast, running on emerald i think it made about 300bhp on the 8v lancer engine with a big big turbo!
at snett my oil feed for pressure gauge was routed next to turbo (os8472 cough!!) and popped, and the oil ignited, luckily no damage just powder everywhere!

gonna make some fog ducts as the ones from ebay aint the best looking things in the world, then mould them in carbon and fibreglass so i can have a pair for each car, then cover my mirror baseplates and spoiler and then who knows
also my new grille badge... a mate made this for me, just need final trimming and sanding then clear cote :)

-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
more progress this eve, but no pics yet,
started sanding the mould back as i can't have any depressions or the part wont ever release.. currently sitting in a thick coat of gloss black so i can sand smooth and get rid of any pinholes etc
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
slight update, mk2 ducts look better, but still learning with the mould, so now making a mk3 which should hopefully work!
you can see the progress between mk1 and mk2 below
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1.../duct1and2.jpg
and mk2 on a car
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...mcuk/duct2.jpg
so new mould, and learning every time so hopefully should have a pair soon, with a mould that i dont have to smash to release the part!
also, got a nice fmic made up for the raider
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...idercooler.jpg
will be getting this on in the week all being well, just waiting for my aluminium pipe to arrive :)

latest update:
https://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.p...ictureid=14981
after helping to oli's heater matrix sunday, got the car up the workshop and got started, finally got the AEM gauge in, MSD coil and toad up and running with remote lights and headlights, and dual zone proximity sensor.
still got a massive list, but will be working on it properly now i have the time/space :agree:

Thatll be nice when you hole it with a big stone :cooter:
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Looks good, make sure you put some mesh behind it to protect from stones in the wheel arch, mine gets caked in crud and stones after a while! Have you got a stat' take off plate? I would recommend you fit one or you could run your oil too cool with the big rad!
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
i hardly use the car, but will mesh up behind it for some added protection. next on the shopping list is an oil temp gauge, and if its too low i'll add an inline stat :)

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Not good matey sounds like you may have a det problem as your are running high comp so you are much closer to the threshold. What max boost do you run nowadays? and do you use the water injection to help reduce the det?
-

was running 2bar on a long 5th gear pull, so my fault! no signs of det on pistons or liner walls, or head. vehicle has been breathing heavy for a while as well. was using water injection
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
2bar is a lot of boost, to crack a liner she must have been knocking a fair bit/fuelling leaned out...classic carb bowl emptying on a long pull?? Get a steth on when u get it back together to listen for det.

new rings and gaskets on order, need new liner machined down by 0.75 then that can go in. also going to sort another clutch as the volvo 440 ones only seem to last a few minutes before they slip in 5th :(

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Mark, that doesn't look good damage looks like over speeding and high boost damage to the piston to cause that maybe a weak mixture in that cylinder.
-

i was going to say what would cause the ringlands to go like that.. AFR's were ok as far as i know, i use an AEM UEGO, but like i said earlier its hard to concentrate on driving on a country road at the best of times
i think it may be boosting slightly higher with the tubular on, or should i say spiking higher, i didn't really check. that piston has been in there ages, and the liner since my pod 'pop' in 2008, tbh i just threw it together last time with the old rings on new liner etc. it was cyl one that went, it had been breathing heavily for a while as well, usually on high boost, to the point where its ruined my clutch by blowing oil down past the TDC sensor :disagree:
-

I found when I used the gaytec Mk1 manifold that boost level stayed the same but the spool up was quicker 200rpm's quicker (i got rid purely as I missed the burble). Afr's may have been ok on the gauge Mark, but the readings are taken in the downpipe so once out of the engine. The inlet manifold is a bad design and cylinders 1 & 4 run leaner than 2&3.
Quick off topic question with your VNT and high comp engine what is the location of your TDC sensor? are you running fully retarded or advance?
Breathing heavy could also be part problem may have had lack of lubrication for the pistons:scratch:.
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
my TDC sensor is really far back (towards bulkhead) if that helps?! its how mike set it up
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
the piston damage is from detonation, be it caused by weak fueling or too much boost and ignition timing
Alot of skylines suffer the same thing when they have been hack mapped with safc2's

If the sensor is towards the bulkhead then that got abit of advance on there, not what you want with VNT, high comp and boost mate.
Do you check for det at all mate?

 Sounds like what I do Mark you need get that TDC to full retard and the get some det cans and listen to det and adjust tdc a few degs retard before you get det / knock. I like to learn the hardway also:laugh:

Tight as mate! do those calipers clear the wheel by a few mm then? or catching?
Looks awesome though!

still a piston short... hopefully have it machined this week :crap:
spent a bit of time yesterday on it, cleaning the bay, sorting wires, then decided to check my water injection..... lucky i did!
turns out the pump wasn't working, so changed the relay and really low pressure. after a couple of hours of messing about ripped apart the pump and cleaned and flexed all the o-rings... now it works properly again
i think lack of w/i was the cause of the pop, as it relies on it heavily at high boost :smokin:
from now on w/i check will be part of my weekly/pre thrash checks

i'm no mechanic, just a few pipes to take off, drop starter down on driveshaft, bellhousing bolts, steady bar, OSF engine mount, TDC sensor out, bottom pulley off and throttle cable etc and it lifts straight out, leaving box in situ :agree:

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Hopefully once I get started I'll be ok, awesome car though, get some more vids up on youtube ;)

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
most likely, havnt looked at it yet but wanted to change oil pump anyway. dont mind if it's another piston but will prob turn it back down to 27 went pop at a long pull at 34 lol
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
got it up to workshop last sunday after snapping the only remaining towing eye clean off en route :cartman:
last wed did comp test, no1 was 60psi the rest were all 130psi, head off piston out and no1 has had a meltdown
saturday was piston machining day, 4 new pistons 0.5mm off the top then a 2mm dish to lower the comp a little more
last nite put in pistons and new crank, bottom end now built n ready to go :agree:

I haven't kept up to speed with the finer details of your thread (I'm always looking at the ace pics), but I do know you have water injection. However, when you say it went pop at 34 but you'll probably turn it back to 27, don't tell me that's psi. :scared:
You absolute nutter. Lol :D Has anyone ever managed a reliable, everyday boost level over 22-23psi on a road-going C1J?
Certainly, if you were having joy at 27psi, that's the most I've ever heard of and good on you. 34psi though, surely =
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Mark, has your car been setup for the 34psi? or even the 27psi? have you been monitoring afr's? what afr's you been seing @ WOT, do you know what charge temps you are getting also.
Also what position is your TDC sensor? only ask as on my old MSM VNT engine and the engine I built after that I had to run full retard:agree: and that was 2 different engine's.
I found the water injection on a 50/50 mix would only allow me to run an extra 2-3psi more boost before det problem's. What fuel pump you using and also what fuel pressure regulator you using as you must be needing to upgrade the pump beyond the phase 1 now and getting and adjustable FPR. Might be worth you looking into EFI if you want to fuel safely and be able to adjust timing to avoid det problem's for that amount of boost.

it was set up for 27psi by mike himself, it went up to holding 34psi after the 285 cam and tubular manifold. i normally run it at a bar for day to day use, using an in car bleed, so most of the time its rich, at 34psi was sitting at 12.3 AFR but its hard to look and drive when its on boost as its savage
my TDC is fully advanced, on a high comp engine its bad news, but i did run it for years with no problems. fuel pump is whatever mike48 fitted and its got an FSE fuel pressure reg set up on the rollers at jamsport.
oli's 5 put me off EFI as i run a VNT and wouldn't get rid just for EFI, plus it cheaper for me to keep putting pistons in (i have a stockpile now) than go EFI :cartman:

:burnrubber: I can imagine @ 27psi it's very savage let alone 34psi your mad:laugh:.
VNT + Advance TDC + High Compression = is not good
With the new compression maybe you should look into mappable ingition getting rid of the old GTT AEI and slipping a 16v coil pack in it's place and having seperate management just for the ingition would be well worth it and still retain carb have a word with Logg as he has done it recently on his 5 and I would say it would be a very good benefit for your 5:agree:

Mark have to say my mega jolt has transformed my car at 16 psi feels like 20-22 on old management at 22-24 its bloody amazing. just make sure the trigger dont slip ala mallory park, thats what caused my det. If you need any help if you do go this route just ask me :)

yeah its the next logical step oli's experience has put me off full EFI with a vnt lol
just gotta sell the tungy and i'll have some dollar for the ecu. hopefully they do a version that'll read off a 16v or scenic flywheel so i wont need a trigger wheel

-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
you need to run more fuel through it fella 12.3 is only just safe on most injection turbo engines.
I'd be down into 11.8-11.5, you will loose a max of 10hp but your pistons will be much happier in the long bike chasing runs :)

on the plus side, the new toy arrives tomorrow...
its only 110bhp ;)

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
slight update... after its slumber since aug 2011, finally got it out the garage friday night, got it up to the unit and replaced the starter and clutch cable, then got it MOT'd on sat :)

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...k/4dbf261d.jpg
needless t o say it sailed through, so just need to tax it ready for the nice weather
bit smokey and my turbo needs a rebuild so thats going to be next on the list
only problem i have now is that i'm spoilt for choice when the sun is out.....

just liners not engines
overskimmed head is finally being retired, found split coolant pipe and no mixture screw which i think helped it die, also retarded the ignition timing and i'm gonna swap the TDC leads over to make up for less advance..
should be back and running again in a few evenings and wonder how far i'll get this time, and as for F7 turbo... naaaaa

about time mr B;)
maybe invest in a digital/twin port boost controller for the spike issues and start measuring inlet temps/egt's your pushing way to much boost for
" best guess tuning"
or if you want more reliable 230-300 bhp then start again with more capacity, like the b18f/f7 engines
after the 3 or 4 blow ups you have had, the c1j rebuilds would have paid for a bigger /better engine set up ie oil sprays under the pistons and fuel injection, and no liners to split, that said get it wrong on the above renault blocks and you can start spending money:innocent:
your call:D
might be up and running in another month or so( depending on how much longer helix can piss about making my clutch:mad:) anyway could pop over and tempt you to the join the f series club, its catching:laugh::laugh::laugh:
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
i can see what your saying but the power delivery of a C1j is unlike any other, and i dont want it to loose its savageness, thats what makes it fun
liner replaced last night, just got to put valves in the new head and put it all back together

thought id sort some of my carbon bits too, as they had been attacked by the UV light :(
before:

after:

just need to put some 2k lacquer on to gloss them up a bit

i didn't mean they were slow, i meant with a VNT on a c1j starts spooling at 1500rpm hits 27psi by 3000 and pulls to the limiter at 7k, spins up in 5th in the dry by stabbing the loud pedal

oh no I know you didn't mean that mate, its not the speed I thought you we're on about, its the delivery, the F7P on a pikie chip provides a very brutal power spike as it comes on boost, its a right giggle! I know mine aint slow, 12.3 1/4 mile on road tyres shows that, I wasn't talking about outright power ;)
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
for me the appeal to the c1j is..
- the fact its 1.4 and sounds like a tractor,
- the fact when you open the bay you cant see the engine, just stuff all around it.
- and the fact that most jobs can be done without removing the engine.
If i was offered another one on a plate for minimal cash id take it.. but until that day im happy to stick with c1j :D
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
little bit more done last night... just cooling system to finish and boost pipes etc.
turns over with good oil pressure, also want to do some wiring so will do it thurs eve all being well

https://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.p...pictureid=6449
https://www.rtoc.org/boards/picture.p...pictureid=6450
Finally put a feed pipe onto the ducts, mounted to the car itself so stays in place when bumper is removed, and lines up with duct when bumper is on. currently just an extra air feed to filter may use it for wastegate if i get heat problems in the bay

That's because if you spend too much time and money it's only a waste when it pops again. I think fuelling is what keeps breaking it, ive never ever had mechanical failure of an engine I've nailed together...

got some of the loom in, took ages to work out where everything is going, then route the loom, then get it all to length then do all the looming, heatshrinking etc. should make it easier to do bits in the future tho, as the nodiz loom is connected to the car loom via another plug so in theory it'll unplug the whole lot if need be :)
just waiting for my HT lead kit and a few other bits and bobs that i oversaw to arrive, then should have it fired up again in a few days :)

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
How did you sort out the dizzy?c
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
chopped a spare up with a grinder, then pulled the 'shaft' out the middle and cut that down even more, grinder on the top to make it smooth, then put the shaft back in so it keeps the dizzy drive down running the oil pump, then couple of washers instead of the bracket and bolt back on :)

Once you have a rough idea where the missing tooth is in relation to TDC, using the trigger wizard, set up as follows (I'm assuming you are using a 36-1 wheel):-
1- select Triggering Tab
2 - Select trigger settings
3 - Select setup wizard
3a - Select 36 missing teeth on the Crank.
4 - select 4 cylinders
5 - select '90' btdc
6 - select '1' under missing teeth
7 - Select missing tooth crank
8 - Select batch
9 - Select coil pack.
Once all that's in, disconnect your fuel line to your carb. Go back into the trigger tab and select lock trigger timing and adjust to 10 deg. Strobe on the flywheel to see if your timing mark hits the 10 degree mark. If not, use the offset trigger angle buttons to get it to line up. once you have a match, unselect 'lock timing' and you're done. BTW the 10 degree timing mark is the one nearest the passenger.

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Mark, I just noticed on your thread on the Nodiz Forum you mentioned that the R5 Rev gauge doesn't work, is this from removing the AEI that it now doesn't get a signal?
-

Kinda, I just ran a couple of diodes from the coil trigger wires, into a Zener diode then chipped into standard rev counter wiring at aei plug :-)
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
ah ok, but I take it that didn't work?
I was looking at the user guide for the Nodiz and it says there is an output for a rev counter from the Nodiz Electronic module, have you tried using this at all?
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
mark what rad fan are using - as if im going to use my new rad il have to get a front mounted cooling fan - what can be used easily?

No it works with the diode method, I've got a couple already built on ebay if u search 'nodiz' on there :-)

Spal one fella, was on the rear but putting it on the front frees up room for the screamer pipe run :-)

Lol, that's because they are not designed with an elliptical motion in mind.

at least youve broken the 30 mile barrier already on its first outing, infact you almost doubled it:p:cooter::laugh::laugh::laugh:, which is still more than mine will prob do this year:laugh::cry::cry:

Not sure you're getting this, so I'll elaborate a little.
Now I think it's fair to say, I'm not the most competent person on here. But when you put the gearbox off, accurately measure the flywheel for the true centre of your cover plate. Your mate who mounted mine made a right arse of it costing me the flywheel and £50 for ****ing it up. Looks like he may just have contributed to your short comings.
Then again, it might be something totally unrelated, but clutch release bearing probably dont like to wobble about on untrue things.
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
I haven't had it apart yet cos workshop is full of other people's cars, bike broke too so wasn't te best long weekend lol
I'll measure the flywheel but when mine was drilled I drilled thru the old one so it will be exactly the same as the one that turbo ted used if that makes sense
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Slight update.... Fixed the bike! Car still outside thinking about what it's done however... Naughty car!

Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
looking through this I've noticed you've moved the brake fluid reservoir, how and where is the bottle located now? did you have to cut the factory plastic pipes?
as the standard location is perfect for a coil pack
-

Bottle is no other side of scuttle panel, didn't have to cut pipes just fed through a hole I made :-)
I did have coil mounted there before I went wasted spark. Now it covers perc fan hole :-)

I thought as much, where abouts did you drill the hole? As where I'd like the hoses to come up is covered by the drivers side battery mounting.
I'm fitting my nodiz and fitting the coil pack where the bottle goes as I've got the gen 2 coil pack which is flat bottomed.
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Battery should be on pass side on a gtt shouldn't it? Mine is in boot so can't remember
Hole is just in the bottom of scuttle, on the ledge so it's just above master cyl, pipes feed through. I tried a flat bottom coil but had a misfire so I'm actually running an old ka 1.3 coil I had lying about... So far so good
-
Re: my ginger mobile, from start to present... pic heavy!!
Cheers bud
wonder if I'll get a missfire now bloody hope not after the time it took to find the right ht lead connectors for it

Luckily... I already had a worthy replacement, and was the only car I would sell the 5 to fund...
It may not be turbocharged, but it's still an epic wagon, love it even with running costs lol
