Re: NEW batch of New BRIGHT ORANGE OE Dial Replica's now in stock; INC's km/h dial :)

As I discussed on THIS THREAD a few weeks ago I've been looking into getting some replica OE Dial sets made so all of us who are fed up of looking at those sun bleached LIGHT PINK dials we have in our cars with nice new BRIGHT ORANGE ones :D

Well today I've had a response back from my supplier with an initial proof showing the dial design. Please have a look at the PDF which I've uploaded at the bottom of this post. I've also uploaded a picture graciously supplied by Bill showing a BRAND NEW set of OE dials so you can compare the two.

Because of the manufacturing process there are a couple of little differences which have both been pointed out to me and i have noticed myself and they are:

1. Their are not as many graduations on both the Turbo Boost Gauge and Rev-counter at the higher boost/RPM areas of the gauge becasue the concern would be that that the markings would not be as clear as the OE ones if they tried to replicate them EXACTLY becasue their would be "bleed" between the graduations.
2. Below the Jaeger manufacturers mark on the main Speedometer there's not the white Jaeger manufacturers code. I've not spoken to them about this as yet? Is this something which you guys would like on the clocks for the full OE apperance or can you live without it?? Maybe we could slightly alter the code to have some RTOC reference if we want to be cute?! (like RTOC-09) ;)

The guys have already said in their e-mail "Obviously it is not possible to show the colours correctly on the PDF, but on the actual print we will get as close as possible" so don't worry about them looking a bit wishy-washy at the moment.

I'm intending these dials to TOTALY REPLACE the OE dials your car was supplied with so would have to dismantle your dash & remove the old dial covers to ensure the illumination is correct. I'll write a how to for the "Guides" section as & when we get these made for those of you who are concerned about taking your dials apart.

At the moment I'd like the people that WANT TO COMMIT to having a set made to make themselves known on this post & any questions/comments to be raised also so I can get an modifications done PRIOR to commencing manufacture.

Any chance of them printing the zero point ref' dots on each dial as well? Not the end of the world if they can't; just it makes aligning the needle to the correct base point more easier when refitting them.

What I was going to do was take a digital picture of my gauges to see where the zero point was before I started to pull them apart so I can put the needles back to the points on reassembly.

I've noticed that some gauges have different zero points so I don't think their is a standardised set point?

If you look right at the edge of each dial fascia/overlay, there should be a tiny dot - That's ya zero ref' point that the needle should point to when re-fitting.

1. Is the black going to match the rest of the parts in the dash
2. I assume the coloured parts behind the fuel light for example are not a problem?.

Copyright? Balls to Copyright! :laugh: We're going to the effort of getting these made becasue Renault won't support us so I can't see Jaeger getting the hump! I don't actually know if Jaeger are still going??:confused: I would like to see the lilttle code on the bottom of the dials so shall I just ask them to copy the code that are on the set of dials that they're recreating?

The fuel gauge dial being recreated is the one shown in the PDF document in my initial post. Do people want me to look into getting another version manufactured?? This may push the cost up for all parties?

It will be the same black on all clocks as they will be printed together. As for matching the dial surround... I guess so?

As for the coloured lights I'm going to ask them the same question next week as i was having the same thought :scratch:

:laugh: i just meant some repro companies may refuse to print brand names for copyright reasons etc . . anyway, if they dont give a fook, they'll surely crack on with the serial number/code too :) as for the number/code itself, was it any different from one car to another - doubtful id guess? Crack on with the one you have.

To elaborate, I mean the side strips for lights/indicators :)

Not the greatest pic, but thought this might help (saves having to keep running outside and have a look anyway) only difference being the mentioned code number.

For what it's worth, I'd personally rather have the fuel gauge increments as per Bill's picture, if available/possible.

So what's the story with the different style of fuel gauge? Is it different year of manufacture/different plants or what?

I've found an alternative fuel dial set & will be sending it off to the manufacturer on Tuesday to see about getting it manufactured. ;)

Yes the UK dials have MPH & KM/H so you can use them in France & set the correct speed.

I am speaking to the manufacturer to see if they can produce a set in K/MH. They would be an IDENTICAL replica with the correct BRIGHT ORANGE colour ;)

tbh mate it's near impossible to show off the proper colour in a photo. I've tried all sorts of different angles/lights with the camera, to get it spot on, but I've always failed :(

The thing that's popping into my head as being pretty close, is those fluorescent red pens you used to have at school (well I did anyway). Just a couple of shades darker :D

UPDATE!!

Had word back from the manufacturer last night and....

1. The original manufacturing number will be incorporated onto the speedometer dials
2. The warning areas of the 3 smaller dials will be obscured as in the originals (They showed them as visible so we could see that they had included them)
3. They will provide us all an alternative fuel gauge at no extra cost!!! :niceone:

I'm still waiting for feedback on if they think they can make a K/PH version as they would have to make that up themselves!!

Once I've agreed the colour with them then we'll be all systems go!! :D

UPDATE!!

Sorry for the delay on this but i've been on Holiday & the Nurburgring etc etc....

Anyway, I've had an e-mail from my supplier today confirming that he has had two special red/orange inks delivered and had printed a test sample of each for me & they're in the post now.

As soon as I recieve them I'll see what i think then post them off to Bill-J for his final rubber stamp then we'll be ready to rock!!

Not long not guys, they'll be worth the wait..... :D

OK guys, another ****UPDATE!!****

Recieved the colour sample swatch from the manufacturer & passed it on to BillJ for approval & in his words the colour match to the original set of dials he's got are "SPOT ON" :niceone:

Therefore i'm just finalising the details now with Clee about getting half the cash to them so we can get a full proof made up for approval then we shall be putting them in the shop!!

They will all go into the shop and it's first come first served . The club is paying half now to get the production rolling and once we approve the first off we will pay the balance and get them in the shop .
Final price is yet to be set but it works like this .Total cost delivered to me ,then we add 10% and that is the Member price .I then add 25% and that is the list price as seen in the shop to Joe Public ,all + £2.50 p&p .
Members need to use the discount code as listed in the club area . At the minute this gives 20% off but I will put it back up to the original 25% .We were losing out on postage for some stuff but overall upon closer inspection it all evens out .....

How many times have we seen people put their name down on lists for something then when it comes time to stump up the cash people develop short arms & deep pockets! :laugh:

Therefore we've decided to order enough sets to cover the 35 people that initially added their name to the list in the last 6 weeks knowing that some of them will not buy them so we won't be left with loads of dial sets we can't shift?

I appreciate that, but this thread's been running since end of August. We're now in October, and for the majority of the time the thread has been hovering around the top of the thread lists.

On the flip side, why should the first 35 people potentially miss out on a purchase as well then?

Why not offer people a chance to pay in advance so you know they are committed? Then it is win win, the club loses no money and the people who have paid in advance get there goods when they are done!

When they are listed they are listed and anyone can buy .I could list them now and people that wish to purchase can do so straight away .
Not possible to set a private invitation only page and I've not got the time or inclination to chase up potential buyers .If you want a set then buy a set :p

So what was the point of having a name list then? If it wasn't for those people initially committing to the idea/purchase, then I doubt Steve would've bothered having them made up.

Bit of a kick in the teeth given there's a good possibility that some of the 35 might not get chance to buy their set due to this first come, first served shpiel.

If they haven't paid after, say, a week, then the left-over dials are then made available for everyone to buy via the shop.

Everything has been finalised with the manufacturer & Ian S should be sending them them half the money so they can make the final sample ready for sign off. Once that final sample has been approved b (By Myself & The New & Improved Bill J :laugh:) then we will be full steam ahead! When I get the first "final sample" I shall be fitting it to the clocks in my car & doing a FULL step by step guide on how to change them & putting it into the guides section together with plenty of photos of the dials so you can all see how lovely they will look! :D

They were fairly easy to fit but you do need to be careful as you have to pull the needles off each clock. I took a fair few photos for a fitting guide as & when I get round to putting it up here.

I've not as yet had a look how they look at night because my car is currently 35 miles away so I can't nip outside to plug them in but can only guess they will look as good at night as they do in the day! I'm certainly guessing that they will look 1000% better than all the wishy washy light pink dial sets that we're currently all running about with! :D

I know all you 35 are itching to get the opportunity to purchase your sets so I NOW FINALLY SIGN OFF THESE DIAL SETS & APPROVE THEM FOR PRODUCTION!!!

Clee & Ian S, please can you get the payment over to the manufacturer ASAP & get them all made?

PURCHASING YOUR DIAL KITS

1. When all the dial sets have been sent to the Clee in the Shop I will be sending a group PM to all 35 people with their names down and tell them how to send the payment to Clee.
2. You will then have ONE WEEK to purchase your dial sets from the club shop.
3. If after seven days no payment has been recieved from you then it will be assumed that you do not want the dials so they will be offered to the others who have shown an interest.
4. IanS and Clee are negotiating with the supplier about getting more made in the future so don't panic if you miss out on this round, their will probably be another group buy in the future.

I think that's cleared eveything up with this thread??

If mine are anything to go by the needles are indeed quite a lot lighter than the dials.

can't wait to get my dials.thought i have a go on an old set first as the speedo is broken it won't matter if i messed them up.i came up with this may be helpful if you can't get good picture .i used an old envelop as it was a bit stiffer ,cut it a bit bigger than the dial,the speedo and revcounter take out the screw and push through the paper an screw it back on hold it down an cut it to shape then mark the end of the needle,i found you have to have the clocks laying flat because of the balance weight in the needle.the fuel /oil/temperature gauges you have to take them out .after some time of being careful not to damage the little peg ,i thought was plastic but turned out to be metal,gave a good push from the back then gripped the top with a pear of pliers an twisted it out didn't seem to damage it.do the same as the speedo with the paper.becareful pulling the needle off.i hope this is helpful it worked for me. sorry but the pics above arnt enough for me, all im saying is the last time i fitted a set of while dials, i prised the needles off but when i pressed them back on they didnt read the same as before:scratch: sooo im not really that confident on doing this:ashamed: didnt someone mention they were going to do a "detailed"guide.?

How have peoe removed the little rivets that hold the dial fascias on? With the clear plastic bit or prized them up from the front and left the plastic light guides behind? I don't want to break them. Is there a better way of pushing them through from behind? Thanks!

OK guys, here's my 10 minute fitting guide!! :D

Remove the clocks from your car and you will see the clips on the top and bottom of the clocks which you will need to CAREFULLY prise up to remove the plastic screen from the clocks

Once you've got the cover off the clocks take a picture of ALL the clocks in detail so you can reference where the needles need to point. Ray had a good idea earlier in this thread of making a paper stencil to mark the needle position :niceone: BE AWARE that the needles on the dials will rest in different positions depending upon if you have the dials standing up or laying on their backs!! However you take the picture you need to be sure that's how you re-fit the needles!

First we'll do the Tacho & Turbo Gauge. The Speedometer gauge is the same as this. After you have taken your picture to see where the needles need to point:

Get yourself a fork out of the kitchen drawers & CAREFULLY fit it underneath the needles and making sure you keep the leverage on the needles so you're pulling them vertically off the dial shafts remove the needles. You'll find some of them come off easier than others so be careful!

Once you've got the needles off you need a VERY FINE flat screwdriver to undo the dial removing screws on the face of the dial. Be careful not to scratch the screws too much by using the wrong sized screwdriver as you'll have to look at your mistakes every time you drive the car!! A few scratches can be touched up with a Black Marker! ;)

Once you've undone the screws, remove the dial face then re-fit the new one and then re-assemble in reverse order!!

Next we'll do the FUEL, OIL & TEMPERATURE GAUGES. :D

To sucessfully replace these dials you need to remove each one individually from the clock housing. Each dial is held in by three small copper 6.5mm nuts and copper washers. Carefully undo the nuts and make sure that the washer's don't make a run for the floor as they have a habit of doing!! You can see the three nuts that hold in each small dial here:

Once you've un-done the three nuts you will find that the individual dials come out of the dash surround pretty easily:

MAKE SURE YOU take a picture of the dial to remember where the needle goes at this point!! Remove the needle using the same Magic Fork Method as mentioned above. Now comes the real Fun Part :crap:

To enable you to change the dial faces on these small dials you need to remove these pesky rivets:

I've found that the best method of doing this is to get yourself a pair of GOOD long nosed pliers! :niceone:

First of all place one tooth of the pliers on the underneath of the rivet then the other tooth of the pliers beside the head of the rivet BUT NOT ON THE HEAD, therefore allowing you to squeeze the pliers and slightly push the head of the rivet out of the dial housing:

Once you've got the head of the rivet off from the front of the dial face get your long nosed pliers gripped around the head of the rivet and pull the rivet out WHILST TWISTING THE PLIERS AND THE RIVET IN AN ANTI-CLOCKWISE direction!! You'll see when you remove the first rivet that you have to work with the "thread" on the rivet to remove it.

Onve both rivets are out you can then re-fit the new dial face and then just re-fit the rivets into the housings by squeezing them back into the housing with the pliers but this time putting one of pliers teeth onto the head of the rivet.

Repeat this action for the other two small dials & then you're done.

Final step is to just stand back & admire your handywork!!! :D :yeah:

Do you have a lot of lamps taken off the blue wire after the dimming resistor? That can make them less bright.

OK, Regarding a new batch, I've asked Lockwood to make some but I was intending to have the Km/h dial included in the same print.

So to do that I need an original Euro speedo dial.

I've had a look at eBay France and there was nothing there. But eBay Netherlands does have what looks like a reproduction kit already for sale.

Can someone please translate this German advert better than the on-line translator. It does look a bit like the photo is of originals as they look a bit faded.

There's little point is us making and selling those if they are already available.

fitted mine last night was abit fiddly to do but look amazing now really worth the effort,

the water, oil and fuel gauges are awkward i didnt reuse the original screws again as they are a nightmare to try and refit, i used tiny screws that i found in an old remote lol a lot easier to work with, doesnt make any difference when the facia is on as you cant see them, just a quick tip to people who havent fitted theres yet, watch your eyes when takin them out as they shoot out a bit wild :-)

I've not heard to the contrary from Lockwood. But, we did order 150 sets and that was quite a big job for them with these particular dials, the manufacturing equates to maybe 1000 of their normal sets.

They delivered 100 already, but they were in kmh only for Euro orders and have been sent out.

They scheduled the remaining 50 for this week. We'll just have to see how it goes.

I have'nt read every page so forgive me if this has now been said! but i think the different fuel gauge is for the raider??

i've had numerous gtt's and only the 3 raider's had the 1/4,1/2/3/4 etc on the gauge.

So now we've got limited edition fuel gauges as well :laugh:

I think every late gtt I've seen, not just the Raiders, has got the 1/4, 1/2 etc fuel gauge. I've seen a third different fuel gauge as well, that's got the extra 'lines' like the later ones, but without the 1/4, 1/2 etc written on it :scared:

Purchased a set of these new dials for my car, looking at the originals in Mark Fish's photo below the needles appear to be a stronger orange than those shown in members pictures a couple of pages back.

So clearly the needles fade, just not so noticeably as the dials themselves. Anyone know if the needles are translucent to some degree?

I am tempted to use some orange paint to bring them back as per the example below but if they are translucent, some indicator bulb paint could do the trick.

Edited to say that I know this sounds like a bodge, but done correctly the results could look fantastic.

No, they are completely transparent with an orange underside.

I just gave Lockwood a call to see if they had a solution for this type of problem and maybe could supply us the exact matching orange colour ink.

He said it usually looks patchy when the under side is brushed over and the ink tends to go on the sides of the needle making it look even worse.

He suggested a single pull of a chisel edged felt pen gave the most even looking result. Sometimes if a second pull is needed it can look patchy.

He also said he heard suggested the use of car body work paint touch up pens.

I wondered about using a small firm felt pad, dipping it in the right colour ink and then carefully making one drag down the length of the needle. The trick is to not spill onto the sides and to get an even distribution.

Two pens I've used on the edges of CD's are the Edding 500 which works best and the Uni Posca which didn't adhere or cover all that well to the smooth shiny plastic.

The Edding leaves a patchy first go but does put down plenty of ink. A second go is needed why dry. It does go around the edges onto the faces a bit as the CD edge sinks in a bit to the felt marker tip. That's a desired effect on the CD but not on the needles.

On the front of a white faced CD the Posca really puts down a lot of ink and leaves an opaque layer.

I couldn't suggest how well they would go on the needles. Or how near the orange is to what is needed. Is the OE a bit day glow?

Orange crayons work well.... nice and thick, and easy to scrape of the sides..... simples

I've seen on other car forums people painting them with brightly coloured nail polish, you can even get UV polish these days and seems to look pretty good if done well :)

i had some red engine paint lying around.. halfords special.. used a blade to clean off the old stuff and blobbed on the red engine paint using the edge of a screwdriver.. as its thick it didn't run, just sat ontop really thick..:)

the front the needle is orange and on the rear its white if i remember, so you need to scuff it off.. i remember now, i started with a blade and ended up using sand paper & a rough wet and dry.. then they were clear, key'd and ready for some paint..

there not a 100% match, more 80% but thats better than lovely dark orange dials and washed out orange needles.. i think you could get a better match, but if you have the paint kicking about and its all the effort your prepared to put in, do it..

I was wondering about whether the original paint needed to be removed first.

As people have said they just applied more, whatever, behind and it worked I wondered if the orange was a bit translucent.

Thanks for all of the advice, I will probably take a view on it when I get them off the car.

First test will be shining a torch behind them to see if they are slightly transparent.

Just twist off the rubber "button" on the end of the reset stick & then you can remove the old dials & re-fit the new ones! ;)

Just wanted to report a successful fitment of dials and enhanced needles.

Much like dangerous dave, I used 1200 grit wet and dry to clear of the faded needle backing. Once clear and ready for paint, I got my girlfriend's advice on colour.

We ended up choosing 'Maybelline, Forever Strong Pro, Orange Couture 460' from Boots, £4.07.

i went out to have a look at my dials today and the reds gone darker than when i put it on.. better than faded but i think they can look better and for little effort.. i may have to risk a trip to boots and look like a panty sniffer as i find this colour:scared:

When I had cleared the backs of the needles, at first I tried masking the sides of the needle with 3M masking tape. I painted one and let it dry. When I removed the masking tape, the paint had seeped down the sides doh!

I then cleaned off the paint and started again with a steady hand using the brush supplied. Any paint on the sides was removed with cotton wool and Cutex nail polish remover. This product did not 'dull' the transparent plastic needles as I suspect some paint removers might.

I applied two coats of the nail varnish so that the view from the front of the needles was completely consistent in colour.

The original orange applied to the needles was a solid colour that let no light through. The light reflects though the transparent top area. If you scrape the original faded orange colour off from the backs of the needles, apply the nail varnish, the effect is the same as when new.

I normally get at least 50 sets made at once so the manufacturer set up costs are shared over the whole batch.

To get one set on it's own made will cost maybe £200. Probably more.

If you mean can RTOC supply a set with one dial face missing for a small reduction in price, then that's no as well. They come to us in complete sets of dial faces, not supplied per dial face that we make up into a kit.
