R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
It's been a while since i last posted on rtoc so i thought id take the opotunity to put up some pictures and info on what ive been upto with the car.
Having owned the car now for 4-5years i had a whole list of things built up that needed doing on the car, so took the oppotunity to tackle some of the issues whilst the engine was out (in the raider shown in one of the pics)
The first issue to tackle any rust, and to protect against future rust in the engine bay area. Having had the engine out a few times in the last few years knocks have taken its toll on the paintwork.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...62008072-1.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...62008068-1.jpg
As you can see there was a reasonable amount of rust under the drivers side front wing which needed abit of welding work
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...DSC00449-2.jpg
The engine bay itself, abit of a mess
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...o/DSC00392.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...o/DSC00393.jpg
Took the oppotunity to clean off some surface rust that had accumulated on the wing, treat it and protect it

The engine bay was then sand blasted, preped and painted

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7072008125.jpg
It had by this stage become apparent that two new sills on either side were required, both of which got done before a clean up under the wheel arches before some undersealant.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...72008134-1.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...6092008202.jpg
While on the front end of the car, i was taking my options for brakes into consideration, i had to replace my calipers and for good measure my m/c + quickly managed to get my hands on these
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...6092008206.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...6092008205.jpg
I had to play around with them abit as they weren't going to work with the 285mm discs i was using due to there offset. After abit of investigation i played around with discs off a 182 clio which seemed to do the trick nicely!

Unfortunatly when the sills were being welded in it became apparent that there was further welding required to the floor, My intention had always been to get the inside of the car tidied up so this didn't pose a major problem. However some of the wiring on the drivers side that runs down the chassis leg did catch fire slightly!!
All in all it was looking abit messy in there
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7092008217.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7092008216.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4092008248.jpg
So the dash came out and abit of cleaning was required!

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4092008250.jpg
This time me and my friend rob (while i help he definatly does most of the work!) decided we'd have a go at painting the inside ourselves! We did borrow a gun and were advised by a proffesional painter, so we were fairly confident it would be ok. By now the roll cage had long since been welded in.

Next (partly seeing as we had the left over materials from painting the inside) the area behind the scuttle pannel needed some work. The sound deadening had been removed, and the wiring was untidy so that go set upon

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...1122008542.jpg
New section of loom run to replace the damaged lot that went up in smoke! lol
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4012009554.jpg
...and after a good sort out of the wiring the dash has almost been completely refitted
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4012009552.jpg
and thats about as far as i am to date!! Ive got a few bits and pieces laying around but not much point fitting them whilst theres still so much to be done!! lol
Cheers for the good comments made, always nice to have feedback, questions and opinions :)

Some of my suspension components have seen better days so along with the new coilovers the rest of it will all be replaced, im gradually getting round to getting the bits together, and a few other bits too! Subframe will be getting powdercoated at some stage fairly soon i hope :) then theres a few new bits to go on there too.

Cheers guys, im sure it will always remain a little rough around the edges! My intention is to use it as a track day car so it's not going to look the cleanest. Main idea is to have a good base so that the car stays around for the forseable future!

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Progress has been hard to come by in the past few weeks, what with the weather and other commitments. A few more bits have been sorted out though.....sorted out a decent postion for the brake bias valve thats easy to reach and not going to get in the way or knocked etc.......Also refitted the seats, i don't intend on keeping them really but im better off thinking about putting money into other bits at the moment! So for now they'll do.

Also found this when i was digging around my room, made me laugh!! Must have been a good 3-4 years back! I've seen that a few old renault articles have been uploaded so i'll try and put the whole article in that thread when i get a chance! Scoff, Haz and adeys cars are all in there.

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Progress is sloooooowwwww! :crap: and the pictures below kind of reflect that! I have done some bits, and im hoping that things are going to start picking up pace again in the next few months. Im aiming to have everything sorted for national day! Trouble is i often only get one day a week to do anything to it!
Anyway...
My engines still in abit of a state!
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7032009615.jpg
two halfs in fact
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7032009617.jpg
Got another subframe that i'll be getting sorted out to use.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5022009614.jpg
and all of these bits have gone to powdercoating today
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...8032009620.jpg
Ive got a gearbox with gripper lsd that will be going in the car, so spent my time at the weekend sorting that out.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...7032009618.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...32009624-1.jpg
Got quite a few bits arriving this week so i should be pushing on with it abit more soon! :) ......well thats the theory anyway

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
How much did you have to shorten the N/S driveshaft by Bushy?
Matt5

Thats another hurdle i still need to cross! I got the box with the driveshaft but the guy reckoned it needed shortening more. Where ive got my old box and shafts im hoping it shouldn't be too hard to work out.
Have you got to do the same?
-
Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
I fitted Dave Clarks gearbox with a Gripper already installed, was assured by the guy who re-furbed the 'box it didn't need shortening....lo and behold....we did need to shorten it........
Obviously Russel T and Dave are the guys to ask, but off the top of my head it was around 25mm..........
-
Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Yeah, i must admit i had 30mm in my head from what id read before. I haven't even looked at the one ive got up against a standard one yet! Should give me a clue as to how much shorter it is though. Quite looking forward to feeling how different it is to drive with the lsd :)
-
Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
I had mine shortened by an inch when i had the Gripper LSD gearbox, can't think who i sold mine to now.
I recognise the box in the pic's, believe its my mate Freds old one
-
Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Some of my bits finally came back from powdercoating last week. Most importantly the subframe as i needed this to get things moving in the engine bay.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...2032009642.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...2032009644.jpg
Had a few other bits turn up as well. My steering rack looked like it had a slight bend in one of the arms, and most of my suspension parts were corroded (see previous pictures). Aslo got the front half of my brake system as i'll need to run the lines before fitting the engine.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4032009629.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...4032009626.jpg
The only actual work that got done on the car was on Sunday. It was progress at least though! :)

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Well more has been going on, my mate rob really deserves the praise for any progress there has been to date as he spends loads of his own time on my car and without that it wouldn't be in the shape its in now.
The car has been sat on axle stands for a while so refitted a subframe to get it moving about. This gave the oppotunity to try and do some work in the bay that was required before refitting the engine. Also meant that the new suspension bits had to go together.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...8032009655.jpg
All the new brake lines had to be made up for the front of the car
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5042009684.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5042009687.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5042009686.jpg
Id always had a clearance problem since fitting the one-piece downpipe and re-locating my header tank with the heater matrix pipes. You can see where the pipes are marked in this picture:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5042009685.jpg
Luckily they haven't gone throught so it was decided to repair them and make a few mods.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...5042009690.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d9...2042009693.jpg
The heatshield will be covered by a reflective heat surface, hopefully preventing any further problems to the pipes.
The engine has come together also, hopefully not too far from getting it all back up on the car! ...been a while. (cable ties on the heat wrap is just temporary until the proper ties arrive in the post)

Re: R5 GTT (abit of restoration)
Good work Bushy :agree:
Do you know who used to made the downpipe's for mike/msm? Is it the same guy from the group buy's thread?
