First R5 project - Tungy
Hi guys, though I'd post some pics up of my R5 gtt.
Had it for nearly a year now and its been through a minor transformation compared to some on here, but proud to say I have carried out all the work myself (with some direction from a few local members) and I'm starting to be happy with it.
Started off buying it for £700 down in Kent, rear was all in primer and had been left in the rain for weeks, few shiny bits under the bonnet and a tatty interior. Odd wheels with shockingly bad tyres, near to destroyed T2 turbo running high boost but it still drove okish, for £700 i didnt expect much more and was on a budget. Took it back to Essex and thats where its been living for the last year. Since then I've changed nearly everything that was on the car, as the pics will show.
Drove it for a few months in the summer but took it off the road in autumn to continue the project onto the next level.
Will upload more pics but here is a before - reasonably current couple of pics.

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
The Pics with the white Turbine wheels were taken in December I think, since then Its been through 3 sets of suspension and I finally settled on some Gaz coilovers, so its sitting lower now :)
Will post some more pics when i transfer them from my old computer. Will also update this thread over next few weeks when I finally get round to getting the engine out for a 285 cam, new uprated clutch and gearbox to go in.

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Yeh I agree, its better than the old aftermarket grille I got it with but it needs to go. Contacted Mike at gtspares other week so might have to get a gtt one off him, been searching for a while and its starting to annoy me looking at it everyday.
Fast road/Trackday project
Yeh think it was on its way to the scrapyard before I saved it :)

The one you see on the A12 is 5 turbo car. Yeah think it was even longer ago than that. I'll find pics of it later on today when I owned the car

Grommets put in so the header pipes dont split, picked up some spax adjustables from a breaker, but took old apex kit of and swapped for local members Gaz coilovers in the end. The anti perc fan connector met the turbo so cut it off

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Picked up a Pink Louvered badboy bonnet few weeks ago, been sanding/fillering the crap outta it and finally got it in primer this week. Thought id trial fit it incase i didnt like it.
(puncture on offside front tyre is why its sitting on the lop)
Let me know what you think guys, your opinions are always useful :)

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Thanks dale, those wipers must have given it an extra 5bhp :D haha
I recognize some of the parts in the bay that Ive removed, but i dont know what happened to it bodywork between me and you owning it, definitely went downhill abit :crap:
But at least its still alive!
-
Re: First R5 project - Tungy
At least 5bhp :wasntme: there was a dent in the OS rear quarter which you can just make out, that was thanx to a bloke hitting it on a night out, and the rear arch done same night by one of their friends kicking it  was not happy to say the least. I think somebody must have removed the turbo which was on there as no way was that the turbo which I did have. Just noticed the fiesta in the background, sold the 5 to drive that to and from work, worse mistake ever but couldn't let the 5 drive 1.5miles to work every day, was not doing it any good.

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
It's looking awesome and purposeful mate, where did you get your intercooler and rad? Of you don't mind me asking. Also see your using ash hoses, was thinking of using them myself, how's the quality?
-
Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Yeh I couldnt put it through driving to work straight onto 8miles of dual carriageway everyday, so been using my 205gti as my daily.
Thanks mate, got the rad from a local member, thinks its john - ex torsion tuning mechanic? got the newest intercooler from ebay just a universal £60 job, can find the size if need be.
Theyre not bad actually, I was trying to stick to all sfs hoses like my coolant set but the budget stepped in, they have quite a good wall which doesnt split/tear easily and bend a little if you need abit more of an angle. The reducer hose on the top corner of the pic isnt an ash hose, it has some kind of nasty plack rubbery lining inside that grips to boost pipes, very unforgiving and dont like it at all :crap: attaches to the turbo

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
That's great pal thanks for the info :agree:

Got the engine out today, even after going out last night and crawling into bed at 4am after steaming through a minefield of drinks (including 6 bottles of champagne ) after finding out I was probably still pissed I decided to get on with the 5.
Was waiting around for my mate till he got up at 4pm so I could borrow his engine crane and still got it out before it got dark. No problems at all :D
Pic updates

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Another little update, been doing an couple hours work this week after work on the engine.
Cam cover off, gearbox off, clutch off, turbo off, carb off, head off.
New clutch is on and lined up, just need to paint new gearbox and thatll go on.
Cam will probably be out tomorrow:coffee:
Carb has had a fresh new gasket set
Enlarged Turbo elbow fitted
Head needs No.4 spark plug Helicoiling as some previous no-brain "mechanic" has mashed it up so thatll be a quick trip to the local machinist's for a discount service ;) always helps to be in the industry
Uprated headgasket and headbolts arrived the other day, new chain and tensioner also ready to go on with a few other goodies.

Re: First R5 project - Tungy
Wasn't gonna spend any time on the engine tonight but got bored :p
Got the head sorted out, fresh plugs in, looks like there was already and uprated head gasket on.
Sprayed G'box with primer.
Got the cam out.
Will take it into work tomorrow and use the de-greaser and put new valve springs in if Ive got time.
Need abit of advice now guys, took a pic of the cam/crank timing marks and they didn't line up. Is it just me or is that quite out? They're supposed to point at each other in a line with the crank and cam center aren't they???
Looks like someones had a fiddle with it before or timings abit off? It ran fine when it was in the car.
Also whats the best way to set a piper 285cam up with a vernier pulley in relation to cam&crank timing and retarding ignition???
