Re: Shorten or add length?
The longer the shaft the more it 'twists' due to rotational torque. This could be of benefit on reducing damage to the cv's.
If it was me i would add to the shafts.
Re: Shorten or add length?
What shafts are you running I've noticed that you were selling a 19 16v shaft, can you not use both scenic shafts?

I think he means that once complete, either way, the shafts will be the same length.
How are you going to re-join the shafts after you've chopped them?
Re: Shorten or add length?
These are the closest i can find with the correct hubs and spline sizes, so going to chop, tap and weld them up...
Re: Shorten or add length?
You can't move the CV's, they're fixed and crimped in to the end of the shaft. Cut and weld I'd say. You can cut a castle-top shape in each of the faces you're joining, so they fit together, which gives more weld in there and is less likely to break.
Re: Shorten or add length?
We always shorten the R5 shafts (for the gripper diff nearside shaft) and convert them to later Clio ball and cage cv joints (ditching the three finger thingy).

Cheers Matt! Sounds easier, fancy doing mine for a small fee? My welding isn't great:laugh:
Re: Shorten or add length?
Don't see why not...;)
Matt.
Re: Shorten or add length?
what are the shafts you have?
in order of length:
gtt
clio valver
clio williams
renault 19
I think the 19's work with 172 wishbones.

where do renault 11 fit into there? :ashamed:

Ive added soome legnths from the figures ive gained recently ...
CAR DRIVER PASSENGER
gtt 695 610
clio valver
clio williams 717 625
renault 19 Not measured yet 640
I'm running Scenic wishbones and tweaked gtt hubs, 172/182 rack with tweaked track rods.
Driver side - Williams way too short, R19 5mm too long, can just feel the yokes bottoming out.
Passenger side - R19 too long (15-20mm) have yet to try a Williams shaft, but initial measurements look promising, getting hold of a new one is proving rather tricky!
Re: Shorten or add length?
Do you think you could modify the GTT hubs with the flange from a 172/182 so you could use the 172/182 driveshafts with the GTT hubs? The reason for the flange would be for it's 23 spline fitment as opposed to the 21 splines of the GTT.

I looked at this briefly, I'd say no because the bearings from the 172 are bigger than the 16v bearings - which in turn are bigger than the GTT bearings.
Maybe if the GTT hub was machined for the 172 bearing. I've got some 172 hubs, I'm going to have a shot at fitting those over winter.
Re: Shorten or add length?
why dont u chop and make a sleeve for the shaft halves....slide them into the sleeve and weld.....no alignment probs, plus u could join different shaft ends if u like?:)
Re: Shorten or add length?
Plan is to shorten so only one join, chop, face off on the lathe, drill and tap for a stud into both and fit a sleeve, the weld it all up...! Hopefully be back on the road by the end of the weekend :agree:
Re: Shorten or add length?
How did it all go Alastair? Any pics of the handy work?
Re: Shorten or add length?
Hi Woz, i managed to change a few parts and get a mix of r19 and Williams shafts to fit so no chopping required, ive been for a blast and they seem to have held fine.:agree:
Re: Shorten or add length?
Good news Al. Let's hope they cope better under rally conditions.
