Looking for my first R5
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
Hi all,
First of all i appologise in advance for the life story...
Im currently in persuite of what will be my first R5 GT Turbo but unfortunately im a bit dosile when it comes to buying cars, i.e. i get fixated on a certain aspect of one car and regardless to the rest of the car i buy it anyway.
My first hot hatch was a Fiat Punto HGT (Dont ever buy one), then i upgraded to a Clio Sport 172 cup which i spent quite a bit of money on. I swapped the cup for a Clio dci 100 and bought a Suzuki GSXR 600 K7. I sold the bike before christmas as i needed the money :(
Any way my Clio has been hit by a van whilst outside my house and has been declared as a write off so i thought i'd go for a R5 as i'v wanted one as long as i can remember and cant afford to run a car and a bike atm.
Basically what i am after is a bit of advice, i.e. what to look for when buying an R5 as i here they can be unreliable and quite often abused.
any info would be great and i look forward to becoming a regulay member of RTOC, i hope its as much help as Cliospot.com was to me
Regards
joe

Re: Looking for my first R5
some of these are very nice cars, but be picky as there all near the 3k mark..
near all gtt's have rot, or have had some repairs.. dont belive anything the seller tells you as there ofter trying to blag a pile of mot failing sh1t onto you..
rip into the car, if the paintworks sh1t dont pay 3k, it'll cost you another 3k for a mint paintjob.....and i mean mint, not kev down the lock up with his rattle cans..
that quote for £50 to repair that 50p size bit of rust near the sill is a lie, its a rot box, rip the skirts off there and then or walk away cuz someones pulling your plonker..
oe's great, i love oe, but if knackered and you can't justify fixing it...........its worthless, oe parts are everywhere and your 2-3k car just fell into the 500 quid bracket in parts.. so if you blow that kinda money on OE it had better be solid and have great paint, cuz if not give the money to me and i'll drop you a rotten 5 off and we can cut out the middle man.. :)
tuned ones are a mine field but in the worse case you atleast have some bling to sell or take onto another 5..
solid solid solid solid, good paint good paint good paint.... good engine, in that order..

should i be able to get a nice example for 3k
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
If your carefull you should be able to get a really really good solid reliable 5 for 3k, thats a good budget to have for 1 of these.

Re: Looking for my first R5
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont take this the wrong way but i bumped into an old friend today who happens to have a nearly finished project car for sale
its a N Reg Ford escort RS2000 which wouldn't normally interest me but it looks like it could be mint with a few hours spent on. The thing is he only wants £600 for it...
if possible could anybody who knows anything about these try to slag them off a bit as i fear my R5 GTT dreams may be put on hold and due to the age of them potentially for ever...
i'd just like to thank everyone for their advice this is a great forum and all going well (i dont buy the escort) i hope to be joining you soon
thanks again
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
sorry mate but i would avoid the escort at all costs and get an r5, you cant beat the grins the r5 gives
buy the escort and regret it
3k is plenty and you should be looking at one of the more cherished examples off here

Re: Looking for my first R5
come on people i need more than that lol im sure you love have something bad to say about them
apart from the obvious that is
£2400 is alot of money (for me that is)
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
buy which ever car you like the most. i personally wouldnt touch a ford unless it was a cool one and a rs2000 is not for me.
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
go for a drive in both of them and then you will know why we all would choose the r5 everyday of the week, it would blow the rs2000 out of the water on performance and street cred, but make sure you buy one thats had the right mods and been looked after, if you do then you wont look back
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
rs2000, overrated bag of crap..
r5 , cheap to run, easilly tuneable, much more cool than a ford (the only fords people seem to respect are cossies and rst's.
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
josie tried to pm you but says you have exceeded you storage limit!
And Renault 5 over any ford i think apart from the cossies!
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
Welcome to the club mate.
Mk5 rs2000 is possibly the worst ever rs made, slow & poor handling! get a gtt bought:)

Re: Looking for my first R5
You can't go wrong with Mart's. It's one of the cleanest about (it won best original gtt at the National Day the other year), is owned by someone who knows the cars inside-out, and he's an old fart, so it's not been thrashed about the local one way system. Well, not much

Re: Looking for my first R5
If i was you mate i would try and not get anything too modified. Try for something as original as possible as it will save you a stack of grief in the future. If you find something local to durham, ***i could cast my eye over it for you gratis!!:D
*** Note: time and family permitting!:D

Re: Looking for my first R5
also dont listen to people who say they are unreliable, blow up etc etc
you have done the best thing by joining up on here tho, plenty of sound advice readily available if you get stuck, just expect some crappy comments by some of the c0cks on here from time to time
they are over 20 years old, so expect to renew parts here and there

Re: Looking for my first R5
if your strugging with cash mate, leave mine and look for something a bit more sensible. it is rather extensively modded. theres no cheap crap on it. but as a first timer id be worried about my ex wife hahahaaaaa.
i personally wouldnt use it for daily driving. MPG isnt to bad, but with it being 20 years old its going to have things go belly ups..
wouldnt worry about the engine dieing mind you, id be more worried about the body panels flying off at mach 3. - just messing. if you could resist putting your foot to the floor all the time, it might be ok. my journey to work is all B roads winding, empty and fast. i refuse to use it as id end up driving through a cows belly!
(coops should be able to back me up with that as he lives on my journey to work)
my ex missus used it as an every day motor! had to take it off her after 6 months due to catching her burning scoobies off down the M1 and i couldnt keep up in my old williams (poor willy)
plus she was getting a lot of attention from guys following her and parking where she worked to "talk" to her and chat her up!
with no power steering and wide front tyres she ended up with arms like "the rock" and could arm wrestle me through the table.
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
o i lied
it has a cheap o assmatic rev counter and shift light on the dash
i needed it for the shift light.
doesnt look to bad but you just know if you took it off and launched it off the end of your foot, it would never work again!
actually i think this weekend im going to do some sums and speak to my good lady, i cant sell this car! id kick my own a$$ everyday if i did.
-
Re: Looking for my first R5
cheers for the info m8
would it be possible to fit a dump valve to it
:yeah:

Re: Looking for my first R5
If you want standard theres only 1 choice, it has to be Marts, not seen it in the flesh but I have read these boards for enough years to see the treatment and knowledge it would get.
If you want modified Danny's look immense, I have looked at the pics of that tungy 3 times now, love that car.
Get good bodywork, I done it the wrong way round, got good engine and **** bodywork, bad mistake!
