rotor arm shaft

can anybody tell me how much play there shold be when the dizzy arm is in the car. as it started to run lumpy so took the cap off and the rotor arm moves around 10 to 15mm eatherway. the shaft has noplay when out of the car so should i be looking at chaging the cog at the cam or both.
