Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I bought my first Renault 5 gt turbo years ago when I was a nipper!lol I drove it for quite a few years and then bought a second one and kept them both.
I went travelling from 2005-2006 and my 5 has never been used since. It has been put on the backburner as I have bought a house etc etc. It lived in the garage and slowly rotted away :sad2::sad2:
Recently I have started buying a few bits for it. I went to another members, Tinker Dell, and bought some standard alloys and whilst there he showed me his 5.
It was pretty much OE and I loved it. He was kind enough to take me out for a drive in it and my enthusiasm returned.
So the work began this weekend...........

Last night I started stripping the engine down. I have been losing all my coolant and cant work out where???
And some of the water pump bolts sheared off as I tried to remove the pump:(
But at least I have started on it :agree::agree:

Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
:agree: looks good, I miss my old Tungy... :(
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Welcome back to the 5 club, keep things updated. I love seeing old 5vs getting back on the road. Good luck
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
That's nice, should look amazing with a little work.. Keeping it locked away has been good to it:agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Top work fella - loving the BB Tuning stickers - If only they had treated customers well........
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Cheers lads :)
Its not in to bad condition. Bit of rust around the windscreen though. But its a long term project so no rush.
Ill keep pics appearing when I do anything to it.
The BB Tuning stickers are ace.lol. I never had any real dealings with them to be honest. But i am thinking of getting rid of the bonnet and going back to a standard one.
Really not sure that i will recall where all the hoses go that I removed last night though!!!
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Never mind your these updates... well done mate for keeping this yours for all these years :smokin:
I hope if times are hard I will be able to store my 5 away in the future if needed:)
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
dont know if it helps but i think DJINUK has some rear arches and rear under light trim for sale? might eb worth asking him
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Really not sure that i will recall where all the hoses go that I removed last night though!!!
Get a camera asap!! Take as many pics as poss and label everthing :agree:
Good luck
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Yeah thats def good advice- i have started taking pics and labelling things.
The old haynes manual and the info on here is invaluable too.
I do have all the parts I need to put it back to standard-most of them are in piles in the garage!!lol. But thanks anyway for pointing me in the right direction. I am sure i will need some spare bits and bobs soon.
My steering wheel is just a large lump of mould and fungus at the moment!!!

Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Had a productive few days on the 5 lately :)
Got both driveshafts and calipers and discs off
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_0359.jpg
The roll pin on the passenger side one came out quite easily which I was surprised at :agree:
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_0361.jpg
Quite a few bits out of the engine bay now and its pretty much ready for the engine to come out. I cant believe how dirty it all is!!
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_0362.jpg
And the pile of parts I have removed
Am off to Vietnam for 3 weeks tomorrow so it will all be on hold for a bit. But once I get back i will be back on it again.
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Mate.. you really meant it when you told me you wanted to your 5 up and running ASAP.. at this rate it'll be done before you leave for 'Nam!!
From what you told me tho' I expected a lot worse.. seems you still have a good foundation to start with and the fact that you've owned it for yrs and yrs just makes it all the more worth while ;)
Keeping my eye on this one.. when it's done a trip down to Kenty is due
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
hiya,
Yep your spot on, I want my 5 done asap - it will be funds that hold me back but ill def get there :)
My 5 isnt in too bad condition, but it does need a bit of loving here and there, which I will hopefully achieve!!
As for popping down, your more than welcome mate :agree::agree: maybe try and get a few members with our 5s to meet up??
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Rite- I am back from holiday now, have ordered a complete set of black hoses :)
All I have to do is disconnect the gear selector rod and the exhaust downpipe and hopefully I can take the engine out tomorrow.
I will add some pics of my progress tomorrow- wish me luck :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Slightly productive today............
I have disconnected the gearbox selector rod, disconnected the exhaust downpipe and took all the bolts out of the three engine mounts.
So the engine is ready to come out tomorrow...I hope :)

Not quite sure if I will ever get this thing back together again!!! :(

Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
well done mate, nothing feels better than getting an engine out
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Top job pal:agree: well done
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Thanks lads. It did feel quite good to get the engine out. Now the fun begins.....
Today I took off various hoses etc and removed the inlet and exhaust manifold, which was held on by about 4 nuts between them. Good eh???:agree:
I also took the turbo off and am glad to say that there was no play in the shaft.
I even still have the started motor heashield which I was surprised at :)
And to top it all of, 15 of these turned up today :agree::agree::agree:
I went for standard black.....the right decision????

Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I have removed the head...at last
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_2113.jpg
Apart from being pretty damn messy, it all looks ok. I have bought new engine mounts and about to order a few bits from Mike.
Is it worth changing the liner seals?
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Looking good, and the engine crane/beam held up well :D
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Its all going to plan at the moment.
And yep-the engine crane worked a treat....thank god:)
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
A small update.......
I have split the head, block and gearbox. Taken the old clutch out, which looked fine!!!
Today I sprayed the whole lot in gunk to try and get rid of the years of grease and grime that looked about an inch thick! The gearbox and block havent come up to bad. Am in two minds as to whether bother spraying them or not.
I am concerned that it may all start to flake off and look awful.
Last week I also popped down to see mike and I spent a couple of quid and bought all of the following plus a bonnet and a front bumper :)

Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Ooo we like pics of bits! Lol you going oe with it then pal?
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Lol. :) Yes I think oe is the way.
Although the more I keep digging about in the loft and garage the more bits I keep finding ie a stainless boost pipe from intercooler to carb, lobster elbow. Both of which I quite like but they slightly go against what I am aiming for.........
DILEMMA!!!!!!:confused::confused::confused:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I'm in the same dilemma with mine mate, I've decided to go totally oe on the outside but have a few Cheecky mods under the bonnet, I think that's a good way to go imo
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I agree too i think. but keep your oe bits if u ever plan selling.
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
You're putting my progress to shame Liam!
Good work :)

Where did you get your hoses from mate? If you don't mind me asking
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
standard silicone hoses do look smart in a nice clean tidy OE way :D mines a bit silly blue for coolant hoses and red for boost :D
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Yeah I like the oe look but I also like the shiney silly highly modded look under the bonnet, oh the dilemma!
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I think I am going to go for a totally standard look on the outside and predominantly standard under the bonnet...........
but I am after a few more horses if possible ;)
Steevo...i feel like I have achieved next to nothing, and when I look at the car I do think jeezzz what have I done and will it all go back together!!!!!!
But I am def keeping all my oe parts :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
And a slight update.......

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_2132.jpg
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_2131.jpg
I have degreased the block and gearbox. Painted the block with hammerite.Fitted the valeo clutch.
I have also attached the block to the gearbox and fitted my new starter motor. Didnt take any pics of this as my hands were far too grubby!!lol Ill add some later.
I do feel like I am getting somewhere now though.
In the engine bay tomorrow giving it a good clean out before replacing all the engine mounts......and then the engine will be going back in!!:D
I have decided to put the head back on once the engine is in situ.
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Looking good mate making good progress :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Good progress mate, engine looks like you could dinner off it ;)
I
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Your making great progress on this mate ;)
She will be on the road in no time.
Also Love seeing loads of shiny new bits :D
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Progress has been a bit slow of late
But I have put in a few hours in over the last week.
I have connected the block to the gearbox, attached the starter motor, got the heatshield ready too.
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_2135.jpg
I have also put in new engine mounts all round including the little metal mount that the engine stabiliser sits in :agree:
http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...t/DSC_2136.jpg
I also spent a good few hours cleaning the engine bay up and getting the piles of grease and general crap off the subframe. It looks loads better I think.
Have taken the head apart and am going to take it into work tomorrow and get out the studs that have snapped when I took the water pump off....:crap::sad2:
Will I get this finished for ND????
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Its 6 months to go until ND, and you're already cooking on gas bud! ;) Reckon you'll get it done no worries, good work mate coming along nicely :) :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I hope it will be ready for ND but I am not confident
Having a bit of trouble getting the broken water pump bolts out of the head :-)
But new manifold studs and locking nuts turned up yesterday (cheers mike)
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Get stuck into it fella, persevere with it, it's hard I know when u get to a certain point but it clears and then u think rite, let's be avin ya mentality kick in to get it done, lol:laugh: goin well tho dude:)
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I hope your right TOMTOM :)
Had a tiny bit of progress at last....finally managed to find a bit of time at work to do some work on my head.
I drilled the snapped bolts out of the head (ones which held the water pump on) and tapped new threads in. So I am happpy now as i can hold the new water pump on with all 7 bolts.
Hopefully today I can find my valve spring compressor and grinding paste and get the valves sealing perfectly.
Then give the head a clean up and put in the new manifold studs that I have got.
IS it ok to pop a bit of loctite on these before they go in does anyone know??????????
Ill add a few pics later :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
You can do mate, although really wouldnt have thought you would need to unless threads are bit shady plus could possibly make it more diffcult should you need to remove manifolds at a later date.
Coming along well :)
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
Looks like your doin a good job I like the black hoses where did you go to get them
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
I opted out of using loctite in the end. Two of the studs wont go in, so am going to retap the threads tomorrow.
All the valve grinding is completed now :)
As for the hoses- have a dig around on ebay mate :agree:
-
Re: Fun With The 5 Begins!!
HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!!:):):):)
I have had a productive few days.......
The block is back in the engine bay - had a bit of hassle lining the mounts up, dropping the engine and getting the bolts done up, but I got there in the end.
I have put the headgasket on, popped the cylinder headback on ( all the valves reground), put on new manifold studs, reset the tappets and torqued the head bolts up.
This afternoon I also put the new water pump on.
I am quite happy as it feels like I am actually starting to get somewhere....although everything seems to take ages as I am permanently seeming to be cleaning the years of black gunk off of everything!
A few pics below - apologies if there are too many.
