hello all,
this is to follow on from my thread in general chat, if you missed it, basically i was wanting opinions on whether i should scrap my 5 gt and turn my renault sport clio 172 cup into my project and only car. the consensus was to keep the 5, not surprising really :laugh:.
anyway, the next problem was this threads title, as you can tell from this photo it's been awhile since the car has been on the road :(

the car started off pearl white but unfortunately the paint work was beyond saving and required a full respray, i was in two minds about colour, either a modern pearl white or blue. i couldn't find a white i liked enough so decided on blue, i liked 449 but didn't want to build a replica so after going to a paint suppliers and looking through his secret book of one off colours i found the colour i wanted.
it's a blue base with multi-colour fine metal flake and purple pearl.

so that is pretty much it as it stands
sorry for the amount of pics but i believe a picture can say a thousand words.hopefully picture sizing isn't a problem but i'm not the best on the computer and it's the only way i know to do it. if there is a problem can a mod sort it out please for me please :)
also just noticed some pictures are blurry which i hadn't noticed as i'm having a few issues with my vision at the minute, i can't take any more today as i'm now not with the car

So now you can see what I'm dealing with you can see my concerns.
Now this is why it's taken so long to do anything, I like to have a plan/list to work to so everything gets done as I hate getting half way through a job and not being able to finish it. Another valid reason is I'm tight and would rather do the work myself than spend money on somehing i am perfectly capable of doing myself, but this time also ensure it is done right.
The car actually broke down the night before nat day at rockingham iirc, I worked on it most of the night to get it running but it didn't happen. The next morning I met up with the ea convoy and waved them off :cry: . A few of the lads came over the next week but still no joy, I was getting f'd off to say the least. I sent it to the garage but they couldn't find the problem and sent it back, by this time the tax had run out! TNT Hammond came across again one evening and within 15mins had it running again after talking to 'the master'. Turned out to be an intermittent faulty oneway valves, of the 4 I had only 1 worked 100% the others would do what that felt like so was impossible to set the mixture.
So now it was fixed I had no tax and the mot wasn't far way which I knew it wouldn't pass due to a few minor issues. As I had another car I decided that I'd take my time and get it 100% and how I wanted it.
The biggest annoyance was a White engine bay and blue car, so it was going to be an engine out (again) job. With the engine out I noticed that rust was beginning to make it's Mark so wiped the bodykit off to give it a good look over, wish I hadn't now :laugh: .
As you might notice I've had the car along time, 10~ years and in that time I've moved house 4 times and again next week! The last house had a large garage but I was unable to keep the car in it and before that I've never had a garage. This obviously had an impact on being able to do metal work/bodywork, six months ago I moved it to my parents new garage where it is now, so that's when work began!

The plan;
Strip it down to near enough bear shell
Cut out rest of rust, inner arch and sills
Repair inner sills and replace outers
Replace front end metal work
Remove subframe and rear beam
Send to bodyshop for spraying
Strip sub frame and rear beam
Send frame and beam to powder coating with verious other bits
Rebuild engine
Rebuild frame and beam
Rebuild car
Not alot when I put it like that :laugh:

If you would of had to pay to get the welding done then i'd of said it was a bit too much. But if your able to do it yourself then its worth doing, weldings usually pretty cheap to do it just takes alot of time and effort, atleast if your doing it yourself you know its done througoughly and isnt going to re-apear. Any welding you can get done is going to add to the value. A solid cars going to be worth alot more. Good luck and stick at it, dont be disheartened. mine was in a very similar condition, its taken me about 6 months of 1 day a weeks work, when i finished my welding then got my engine running a couple of weeks ago it made it all worthwhile, i cant wait to get back in the 5.

you have got some work ahead there :eek:but when you've done it its done ,i think any 5 gtt now days will have to go through this process sooner or later, it all depends how much u love the car, with the engine out maybe stick a 1.7 b18 or f7/f4 lump in, b18 being the cheaper and more easier to work around in the engine bay, just thinking that with the c1j getting on a bit how much longer are carb /engine bits going to be available for, and with the b18 engine bigger turbo engine/ more power less strain/ less hassle and efi already in place = more fun less expense in the long run , when parts for the c1j dry up:innocent::D

i know how you feel i was in the same situation a few years back but ended up letting the 5 go.:( biggest mistake i made so eneded up getting another as a project to do up and after 12 months got her back on the road and still love that feeling when i take it for a spin of the boost kicking in and away you go:). plus all the long days /nights (and cash) youve spent working on the car then show how worthwhile its been.

thanks guys, but i have to say you've not filled me full of confidence :laugh:
i've no problem doing welding myself, it's getting motivated to do it! and questioning if it's worth doing :scared: . re-shelling or buying another one is out of the question as i'll probably only end up in the same situation :(
engine is the last of my concerns at the moment, i have a fully running engine, i would just like to put a nice fresh one in. If i do go down the conversion route it will be f4rt as done by andyrg as even if it doesn't go in the 5 it can go in the clio :devil:
another plan, which is probably gonna be what happens is to strip and sell bit's i have no need for at the minute, basically so i'm left with the rolling shell, get it sound then buy the bit's as and when i need them.
If there is anything that anybody is interested in let me know :) (pm preferably)

hi john, welcome to the club
the single wiper was off ebay, i'm not sure who made it, it isnt a storm kit but i think they now do something similar which may be your only option.
the rear lights are a kind of one off, they're based on the prima afterburners which are a mission to get hold of in themselves, the actual lights are hella led rings but they're were something like £40 each :eek:, they cost me the best part of £500, oh to be young again!

was gonna do some more stripping down today but due to being in a bad mood decided it would be best not too as i'd probably go mad and start swinging a hammer at it causing more problems in the long run.
also i have a lack of storage space, i currently have stuff stored in the mother in-laws shed, tnt hammonds shed and stuff at my parents! got a couple of weeks off work so will sort through it all, chuck what's no good and what's not needed. anything that is sell-able i'll stick a thread up in the classifieds

There is a lot of work, but like your title says.. slowly slowly, it'll be worth it when it's done.. I like to say it's more about the journey :agree:
Do you think you'll keep the blue or go back to a stock colour?

i'm not sure to be honest, was thinking about going back to the stock pearl white, although it's a lovely colour when fresh i just think with modern paint technology it could be so much better. i do really like the blue it is at the minute, i had it out in the sunlight and it's got to be seen in the flesh to be appricated but i might go with the albi blue from the 197s or see what else catches my eye. i really don't kno as i had thought about going grey also but i think i've got a little time to think about it and still not have decided yet :laugh:

Yo Tricky, nice to see you last night, thanks for your help with mine (almost there now) you are pretty much in the same position I was 3 years :( ago and I have about 2 hours a week in which I can work on Fluffy. But I have to say, I have a lovely feeling that I now own a 5 that is solid. It is worth doing and you will have a very rare car which surprises many. I love the look on peoples faces when they see one that have no idea what they are. You will be surprised how quickly the rust disapeers and the new stuff goes in. I hope you won't be as long as me, but that time has passed quickly for me and I'm almost there, and once I am - TNT will be round yours.
Keep the C1j unless you have a specific reason for doing the conversions, I can understand why people do F4RT and B18 FT conversions, but the C1j is still a fine power plant for a quick blast. If I intended doing a couple of Nurburg's a year I'd possibly do the conversion, but for 1 or 2 non cometative track days and the odd Sunday morning blast, the C1J is perfect. Shame on you Handy turning your back on the C1J;)

I like this blue I bet it would look quite nice on a 5 - I just like base colours (they tend to be easier to touch up with a can when my angle grinder slips :D

an angle grinder, mig welder and some fresh metal worked a treat on mine :D

not much of an update really.

also got a pair of inner sill repair panels off ashy, already have the outers. didn't want to cut the outers off and find the inners are fecked and not be able to do anything about it, thought it would be best to be prepared for the worst.

stick with it m8 i have owned mine 3 years and only had about a years driving out of it:eek: will be worth it in the end keep the dream alive:)

I used it for over 5/6 years as a daily driver so I've done fairly well with it :laugh: , used to fix it and keep on top of problems as soon as they happened or if it looked like it may have a problem. It became a second car and I lost interest when I couldn't get it running right and I had another car so couldn't be bothered with it :(.
Now I have another house, getting married and working full time so it's taken a back seat as it's hard to find time, money and most importantly motivation!
I have big plans and I won't let the car go until they're done and I'm happy with it, even then I doubt it'll go far!
Good luck with yours, they are worth the grief :laugh:

So I took the windscreen out this afternoon, wasn't sure if I would get the time so didn't get mr raider round to help, spent an hour with a Stanley knife cutting it out as it's gonna be the only original glass to go back in, well that was the plan :(
So had it all free, so I thought, lifted it out about 2" and crunch, a crack appeared in-between the inner and outer glass, the bottom left corner was attached enough to create enough pressure to cause a stress fracture.
Any way the good news is it's all solid, the bubbling around the screen was between the original and new paint and no sign of rust at all. The rust spots along the top edge are gonna be a simple fix also.
Now with the knowledge it's good around the screen I'll set about repairing the sills and replacing the front end :)

good to see your going to keep on with it fella. hope you dont get to the stage im at though and stop like ive done lol. all mine needs is the full respray to finish but i just cant justifiy it on a 24yr old car :(

You could always pay for a substandard paint job like I did! Even newly applied poo paint looks better than old crusty stuff.

Lucky b'stid - Although mine is now all good and repaired, I have yet to put this on the road. I am assure by the short one, that the question of if it will pop out or crack is wholey errelevent, more a question of when:cry::cry::cry:

James when you start questioning and trying to justify spending money you'll never do anything whether it be on the car or a holiday. You'll regret not doing it more than doing it, find a bodyshop that doesn't mind you stripping, prepping and refitting the car, that way you'll save a bit of cash.
Andy, it'll be fine :agree: if not I was thinking carbon fibre screen surround and roof skin :smokin:

im up for strippin and preping but they've gotta refit everythin cause my rear archs and skirts fit for **** lol
carbon roof and surround sounds a plan! bonnet and tailgate to............ mayb wings, bumeprs skirts etc etc lol

so in the spirit of the project, not a lot has happened since the last update :ashamed:
still no major updates yet as the bad weather, house move, Xmas, new year, work and lack of motivation have gotten in the way.
the plan at the minute is to strip it near enough to a bare shell, as the doors and boot are scrap anyway they'll come off to help reduce the weight, as well as sub frame and rear beam which will be given a little bit of tlc, then somehow get it as high as possible to work on the sills.
hoping to get started again Thursday evening and maybe get a couple of members over for motivation and a catch up :)

To say your working area is small would be an understatement. TO say lighting is poor, would also be an understatement.

well a little bit of progress was made thursday night, tnt andy and mr raider came over for a catch up and to try and get things moving again, tnt hammond couldn't make it over, he mumbled something about going to see a Thai ladyboy for a massage or something :rolleyes:
was good to catch up but felt a little bad though as it was time that could have been spent on their own cars.
not a lot happened work wise as my garage area was a complete mess with crap everywhere and poor lighting which i still need to address as andy has pointed out!
got the front windows out which was a nightmare as in my haste i hadn't dropped the windows down to access the retaining screws so a lot of time was wasted, after a bit of head scratching and failed attempts we got them out by removing the regulators and manually pushing the window down.
the remaining bits of body kit came off revealing a little more rot around the rear bumper mounts that needs attention, nothing serious and easily repairable :)

i managed to do a little today, hopefully sold the seats to free up some room and money, so took them out and gave them a clean. also removed the fuel flap as tnt andy needs one, i've got a bond in aero style filler cap to fit so was a small step forward.
i had a bit of a :scratch: to work out the best way to remove the flap, couldn't get anything in the arch to cut the nuts off, ended up centre punching the head of the bolt and drilling the heads off using a small pilot hole followed by a 7mm drill bit.
felt motivated and wanted to do more but got stressed with the lack of space and crap everywhere so packed up again :(
really need to set a day aside to sort through everything and move bits to my house to store, then hopefully i'll actually be able to turn around without catching myself on something.
