Halfords tool are ace, if you go for the halfrauds professional range, they are guaranteed for life (except the ratchet mechanism) if you snap a spanner or split a socket, just take it back and they replace the item.
They even sell new mechanisms for the ratchets at £3 odd !!!!

Have you tried? I broke a 10mm professional ring spanner took it back and they asked for the original receipt, who keeps till receipts, so not as good as it sounds.

We had a few people try and refund the items which they found at boot sales then break them and get a replacement. Now they just ask for reciepts. Like you I never keep receipts for them, plus I purchased them nearly 4 years ago when I left there, got a rather nice discount as a leaving gift :) luckily there are people there who know I worked there so I just ask for them :) I just go through the hex or star pieces, not managed to break any of the sockets or breaker bars from there (touch wood)

I dont see why you should need a receipt if the tool is guaranteed for life, fair enough if people are trying to get refunds. It just seems they are being obtuse and trying to avoid actually honouring the guarantee.
