As I discussed on THIS THREAD (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=9324) a few weeks ago I've been looking into getting some replica OE Dial sets made so all of us who are fed up of looking at those sun bleached LIGHT PINK dials we have in our cars with nice new BRIGHT ORANGE ones :D
Well today I've had a response back from my supplier with an initial proof showing the dial design. Please have a look at the PDF which I've uploaded at the bottom of this post. I've also uploaded a picture graciously supplied by Bill showing a BRAND NEW set of OE dials so you can compare the two.
Because of the manufacturing process there are a couple of little differences which have both been pointed out to me and i have noticed myself and they are:
Their are not as many graduations on both the Turbo Boost Gauge and Rev-counter at the higher boost/RPM areas of the gauge becasue the concern would be that that the markings would not be as clear as the OE ones if they tried to replicate them EXACTLY becasue their would be "bleed" between the graduations.
Below the Jaeger manufacturers mark on the main Speedometer there's not the white Jaeger manufacturers code. I've not spoken to them about this as yet? Is this something which you guys would like on the clocks for the full OE apperance or can you live without it?? Maybe we could slightly alter the code to have some RTOC reference if we want to be cute?! (like RTOC-09) ;)
The guys have already said in their e-mail "Obviously it is not possible to show the colours correctly on the PDF, but on the actual print we will get as close as possible" so don't worry about them looking a bit wishy-washy at the moment.
I'm intending these dials to TOTALY REPLACE the OE dials your car was supplied with so would have to dismantle your dash & remove the old dial covers to ensure the illumination is correct. I'll write a how to for the "Guides" section as & when we get these made for those of you who are concerned about taking your dials apart.
At the moment I'd like the people that WANT TO COMMIT to having a set made to make themselves known on this post & any questions/comments to be raised also so I can get an modifications done PRIOR to commencing manufacture.
I'M AIMING FOR THE PRICE TO BE £35 FOR EACH SET OF DIALS & THEIR WILL BE A MINIMUM PURCHASE OF 20 PEOPLE

Any chance of them printing the zero point ref' dots on each dial as well? Not the end of the world if they can't; just it makes aligning the needle to the correct base point more easier when refitting them.
Either way, I'll have a set please mate.

What I was going to do was take a digital picture of my gauges to see where the zero point was before I started to pull them apart so I can put the needles back to the points on reassembly.
I've noticed that some gauges have different zero points so I don't think their is a standardised set point?

If you look right at the edge of each dial fascia/overlay, there should be a tiny dot - That's ya zero ref' point that the needle should point to when re-fitting.

there is obviously no concern over copywrite, ie - using the 'jaeger' brand name so im guessing they can use the serial number too? Personally, id prefer exact copies. If the serial number is a problem, then leaving it blank would get my vote.

Agree :agree:, the more exact and original the better.
I did look at mine while driving today and thought
1. Is the black going to match the rest of the parts in the dash
2. I assume the coloured parts behind the fuel light for example are not a problem?.

Salut Jean,
It's a tiny dot. Even Hubble would struggle to find the dot just going from Bill's pictures ;)
If the dot's that small then I think we can all live without it! ;) Just take a picture of the clocks with your pikey digital camera before you remove the needles so you know where to put them back on. You Geezer!

Copyright? Balls to Copyright! We're going to the effort of getting these made becasue Renault won't support us so I can't see Jaeger getting the hump! I don't actually know if Jaeger are still going?? I would like to see the lilttle code on the bottom of the dials so shall I just ask them to copy the code that are on the set of dials that they're recreating?
Will they be offering the different fuel guages as I think there are 3 different kinds?
The fuel gauge dial being recreated is the one shown in the PDF document in my initial post. Do people want me to look into getting another version manufactured?? This may push the cost up for all parties?
I have the fuel gauge in the picture rather than the PDF.

It will be the same black on all clocks as they will be printed together. As for matching the dial surround... I guess so?
As for the coloured lights I'm going to ask them the same question next week as i was having the same thought

Crack on with the one you have.

To elaborate, I mean the side strips for lights/indicators :)
Not the greatest pic, but thought this might help (saves having to keep running outside and have a look anyway) only difference being the mentioned code number.
For what it's worth, I'd personally rather have the fuel gauge increments as per Bill's picture, if available/possible.
So what's the story with the different style of fuel gauge? Is it different year of manufacture/different plants or what?

Yes the UK dials have MPH & KM/H so you can use them in France & set the correct speed.
I am speaking to the manufacturer to see if they can produce a set in K/MH. They would be an IDENTICAL replica with the correct BRIGHT ORANGE colour ;)

In that case have a look at this colour chart (http://www.ifspowdercoating.co.uk/ral_colour_chart.htm) & pick me a couple of options which you think are the right colours??
That goes for anyone else who wants to contribute so we all get what we want!

I'm in Devon at the mo mate, and I didn't bring my clocks with me . If you can wait until next week I'll have a look and see what I can find. But not all monitors are the same, so it might not be right
The thing that's popping into my head as being pretty close, is those fluorescent red pens you used to have at school (well I did anyway). Just a couple of shades darker :D

I like a set if you can get the KPH only version as I would need the odometer and trip counter to be in Km to.

Yes the UK dials have MPH & KM/H so you can use them in France & set the correct speed.
I am speaking to the manufacturer to see if they can produce a set in K/MH. They would be an IDENTICAL replica with the correct BRIGHT ORANGE colour ;)
thank you big steave!
thus for me it is OK for one in MPH and km/h at the same time!!
in any event how it is your model English or French, the color will be there even!! not ?!

UPDATE!!
Had word back from the manufacturer last night and....
The original manufacturing number will be incorporated onto the speedometer dials
The warning areas of the 3 smaller dials will be obscured as in the originals (They showed them as visible so we could see that they had included them)
They will provide us all an alternative fuel gauge at no extra cost!!! :niceone:
I'm still waiting for feedback on if they think they can make a K/PH version as they would have to make that up themselves!!
Once I've agreed the colour with them then we'll be all systems go!! :D

Therefore i'm just finalising the details now with Clee about getting half the cash to them so we can get a full proof made up for approval then we shall be putting them in the shop!!

Potential to loose out on numbers this way.. not everybody has the money to hand, and then may miss out. if left to pay as and when... more will sell especialy with somthing like this.
Yeah fair enough.................just don't wanna loose out on these bad-boys:laugh:
They will all go into the shop and it's first come first served . The club is paying half now to get the production rolling and once we approve the first off we will pay the balance and get them in the shop .
Final price is yet to be set but it works like this .Total cost delivered to me ,then we add 10% and that is the Member price .I then add 25% and that is the list price as seen in the shop to Joe Public ,all + £2.50 p&p .
Members need to use the discount code as listed in the club area . At the minute this gives 20% off but I will put it back up to the original 25% .We were losing out on postage for some stuff but overall upon closer inspection it all evens out .....

Yeah this is exactly why Clee & I decided to order 35 sets of dials.
How many times have we seen people put their name down on lists for something then when it comes time to stump up the cash people develop short arms & deep pockets!
Therefore we've decided to order enough sets to cover the 35 people that initially added their name to the list in the last 6 weeks knowing that some of them will not buy them so we won't be left with loads of dial sets we can't shift?
When will they be in the shop?

I do get this and made a reference to it in my initial post but as this has the feel of a limited one off offer I can see a scenario that ppl will just snaffle then up leaving some out of luck (obviously the best outcome for the shop) What I was trying to get at is whether there is the option of another run later.
This thread has been running long enough, and it took till only the other day for 35 names to be present on the list. If people are whinging they're not gonna get a chance of buying one, they should've shown more interest from the start.
IMHO, to keep it fair, those first 35 people on the list should be given the link to the purchase page via PM. If after, say, a week they haven't purchased them, then allow everyone access to purchase what's left over on a first come, first served basis.

some of us aint got the time to be on here everyday, even week?
i can understand the points against the guys saying yes but not digging into there pockets when the time comes, that just fooks it up for everyone, but what about the genuine people that are not always online, following every single thread day for day!!
the ones that will pay straight away????
fook knows maybe its just because im not on the list eh???

Fair comments guys, I'll discuss it with Clee & give the people who have put their names; down first refusal on a set via a PM to a secret link or something in the shop??
Be ASSURED though guys I've seen so many people sign up to lists on this club (like the Nurburgring threads) and then never hear any more from them again when it comes to committing!? :crap: :dearme:
I predict we're going to buy 35 sets & then sell 3/4 of them & then there'll be a few floating round the shop for a few months!! :coffee:
Blue Mack,
I appreciate that, but this thread's been running since end of August. We're now in October, and for the majority of the time the thread has been hovering around the top of the thread lists.
On the flip side, why should the first 35 people potentially miss out on a purchase as well then?
As you say, I'm sure it'll be sorted fairly for the genuine people interested in the dials...
Condition?
PS, how's my Devil brace? ;)
The dials are decent enough to copy, Jon has them.
This threads funny, it clearly says 35 only.
And in the next couple of hours after that amount was posted people posted there name on the list, it almost as if done just so they could moan.... ohhh dear why bother adding name after 35 unless your the reserve incase sombody does not buy up from that list of 35.

Why not offer people a chance to pay in advance so you know they are committed? Then it is win win, the club loses no money and the people who have paid in advance get there goods when they are done!
When they are listed they are listed and anyone can buy .I could list them now and people that wish to purchase can do so straight away .
Not possible to set a private invitation only page and I've not got the time or inclination to chase up potential buyers .If you want a set then buy a set :p
So what was the point of having a name list then? If it wasn't for those people initially committing to the idea/purchase, then I doubt Steve would've bothered having them made up.
Bit of a kick in the teeth given there's a good possibility that some of the 35 might not get chance to buy their set due to this first come, first served shpiel.
It's a RTOC tradition isn't it ?The names list .
Tell you what Mart ,when they come in you can chase everyone up on the list and get them to send the dosh direct to shop@rtoc.org
I will not list them for a week to give people chance to respond .

That's cool. The fact you've already posted about doing it that way should be a good enough starting point, but I'll happily put a group PM together for those first 35 names.
If they haven't paid after, say, a week, then the left-over dials are then made available for everyone to buy via the shop.
All we need now is the final price inc' P&P...
Or do you want to wait until you've physically got your mitts on the dials?

Is the discount 20% or 25% at the moment?

Everything has been finalised with the manufacturer & Ian S should be sending them them half the money so they can make the final sample ready for sign off. Once that final sample has been approved b (By Myself & The New & Improved Bill J ) then we will be full steam ahead! I reckon it's going to take a couple of weeks to sort that little lot out!?
Sorry this is taking a while to sort out guys but I want to make sure it's all right & you're all going to be pleased with them! :niceone:
also, when someone has the time to fit these, could you do removal/refitting guide for the articles section.?
When I get the first "final sample" I shall be fitting it to the clocks in my car & doing a FULL step by step guide on how to change them & putting it into the guides section together with plenty of photos of the dials so you can all see how lovely they will look! :D

Check them out for yourselves!

NEW DIAL FACES
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Raider/IMG_1715.jpg
They were fairly easy to fit but you do need to be careful as you have to pull the needles off each clock. I took a fair few photos for a fitting guide as & when I get round to putting it up here.
I've not as yet had a look how they look at night because my car is currently 35 miles away so I can't nip outside to plug them in but can only guess they will look as good at night as they do in the day! I'm certainly guessing that they will look 1000% better than all the wishy washy light pink dial sets that we're currently all running about with! :D
I know all you 35 are itching to get the opportunity to purchase your sets so I NOW FINALLY SIGN OFF THESE DIAL SETS & APPROVE THEM FOR PRODUCTION!!!
Clee & Ian S, please can you get the payment over to the manufacturer ASAP & get them all made?
PURCHASING YOUR DIAL KITS
When all the dial sets have been sent to the Clee in the Shop I will be sending a group PM to all 35 people with their names down and tell them how to send the payment to Clee.
You will then have ONE WEEK to purchase your dial sets from the club shop.
If after seven days no payment has been recieved from you then it will be assumed that you do not want the dials so they will be offered to the others who have shown an interest.
IanS and Clee are negotiating with the supplier about getting more made in the future so don't panic if you miss out on this round, their will probably be another group buy in the future.
I think that's cleared eveything up with this thread??
Thanks for all your support for these dials & the work put into getting them made, it is much appreciated!! :niceone:
I hope you all enjoy them!!! :D

I'm not sure that the GTT needles have faded that much over time tbf, certainly not like the dial fade. I thought they were always a different, lighter, more orange, slightly transparent colour from the dials at production?

If mine are anything to go by the needles are indeed quite a lot lighter than the dials.

I dont believe in the RTOC of 3 anymore... Look at the ring trips, track days etc.. we hardly have any members drop out...
:agree: good to see that things have changed.
Yeah but this is a group buy and they never work :D

Ah huh..... :innocent:
After this weekend at nd and hearing the stories at track days in the uk from days gone by, i have decided to pull out of this ring trip & trips for 2010.
Instead i will concentrate to work on my cup car & to do a few UK tracks & hopefully a few RTOC members will come along to.
Anyway guys & girls, enjoy this trip. :)

Hey Woz,
At this particular moment it's very far away as I've yet to get my hands on a KP/H set of dials so send off for manufacture.
As & when I get a set they'll be pretty quick to reproduce I guess.
Big Steve,
In that case i'll go with the MPH set.
Clee,
How much do I need to cover postage to Oz?
