Ok.

So the old lappy is on it's last legs. Power in plug is very loose etc. Been quoted near on £200 for repair. Time for a new one me thinks. We have over 1200 photo's and loads of music on the current one. Any tips on transfering all this.

Buy an external hard drive, drag and drop that stuff across. Keep a copy on your laptop and on the external hard drive.

That way if either of them fail you don't lose everything. :) Music and video is replaceable but photos are not

I nearly lost 15,000 of my photos when my external hard drive started failing ... had to send it to a specialist ... £600 later I had 95% of my stuff back! :(

Now I have a dual drive backup solution where it backs up onto two hard drives that are a mirror image of themselves (it's called RAID 1), so if one fails I can replace the drive and make another copy

You will struggle to find one smaller than your laptop hard drive, so just depends how much you want to spend :)

All depends how much external storage you want and how you want to go about it as there are various ways of doing it.

You could buy a portable hard drive which is of a predetermined size or you could just buy a HDD of your choice and then a caddy to suit.
