I have a friend whom has a 5 gtt and has recently got a brand new turbo, now the turbo is a T3 / T25 jobby.
He is suffering a problem with oil leaking (very wet) out of the rear exhaust wheel obviously causing the car to smoke, the bottom end of the engine has been rebuilt and an inline turbo oil filter is in situ to prevent any metal getting into the turbo. The turbo has now been removed and there is no oil in the exhaust manifold and none in the turbo mating flange. There is no in and out play in the shaft. The turbo company who built the turbo recon it's the engine at fault but we are now struggling to see how as it is pretty much new except for liners which have been re-honed.
We are thinking of running the car with the turbo removed to see if any oil comes out of the exhaust manifold and we will try another turbo out. And going to fit an inline oil pressure gauge to see what it's doing pressure wise.
Any other suggestions welcome please?

the inline filter has blocked and staved the turbo of oil....

or....

you've got crap oil pressure, which has wrecked the turbo bearings.

or the second it was fired up reving the nuts out of the car with out properly priming it maybe the cause.....:sad2:

That didn't happen did it? Lol just seen your edit reason it is annoying sorting one thing and something else goes wrong this 5 seems jinxed lol

Cheers sparkie will check those.

Just spoken with my friend on the phone who has said that the turbo company have looked at the turbo and said it is fine. Will get him to get an oil pump refurb kit and fit an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. He has only done a max of 70miles since fitting.

If there was not enough oil pressure could the seals in the turbo not be sealing?

Is the oil return off the turbo kinked/blocked?

were the gudgeon pins fitted correctly and not over heated. only reason i say is i had this problem and the pin scored ollowing oil to pass the rings. gave the same symptoms as if the turbo was at fault

If you have wet oil coming out the back of the turbo but dry in the manifold then i would say it was coming from the turbo itself, can i ask where he turbo come from? (pm me if you don't to put it up here), only ask as it sounds a familiar prob that happened recently on a car i worked on.

Mark I believe it came from CRT turbos http://www.crturbos.co.uk/contact_us.php

As I said, as it is the 2nd NEW turbo to do a similar thing (last time you were advised to check the engine & you rebuilt it) as I said on the phone, I would start looking at oil pressure (high or low), oil starvation, oil blockages & do a comp test 1st before stating it is the turbo at fault Chris... Just in case it makes you look silly.. Try all the above or get a cheap T2 & see if it lasts ok under the same conditions (in line filter etc) , if it does ok I'd be asking them for my money back for sure, If not you have problems elsewhere in the engine/breather system.

Is the oil return off the turbo kinked/blocked?

or full of old thrust bearings:coffee:

The only reason it went back first time was because the exhaust housing was held on by somm :crap: circlip and literally would move if you touched it very slightly:dearme: this caused oil to leak from where the core joined with the rear housing. Chris then spoke with the turbo company who advised that it is the engine at fault but they still took the turbo back. We rebuilt the engine bar a new oil pump refurb kit & honed liners (please remember there was no problems with the previous turbo in situ before the re-build it was a case of unbolt old turbo and place new turbo on).

The turbo then returned from the turbo company with a new exhaust housing this time the bolt type to keep the core in place, and the oil leak is now directly from the exhaust wheel area. The car has covered no more than 60 miles as Chris has been driving like Mrs Daisy.

The exhaust manifold is bone dry and so is the exhaust inlet to the turbo itself. This then points to me as though as already stated above either a blockage or oil pressure problem. Seeing as the car is breathing perfectly fine I am not to worried with the rings but will do a comp test to eliminate anyway.

Chris will be checking the brand new oil feed & new oil feed filter and oil return to sump tomorrow for blockages and will try the turbo again as it is returning tomorrow.

What I have just remembered now I am writing all this is that when the turbo went back for the first time Chris borrowed a T2 from JRP (many thanks John) to which the car was only stood idling with no problems at all for about 30 or so minutes and no oil was leaking out of the housings and the car was also held @ 3000rpm ish for a couple of minutes also to see if any oil leaks and yet again none.

Definetly check oil feed and return...

Ive never changed a turbo without making sure either has good flow...well, most of the time anyway
