Hi all ,

is there any real reason the 182 lump isnt used for engine convertions?

Im thinking of going 2ltr 16v but stay with n/a for a while, I have the option a phase 1 172 engine and gubbings or a 182 inc all gubbings. I have a phase 1 172 gearbox for it already , i also know i would be better to use a 172 phase one inlet manifold as its cable operated. Is there any other differences between the lumps or reasons not to use the 182 with its different exhaust manifold?

with thanks

Get the 172 phase 1 lump like you say as its cable operated. They changed the exhaust manifold and something else just to get the extra power with the 182, but they charge loads more for the engine.

its only the throttle body itself you need to change fella, just get one off an early 172 and its a swap for the 182

i think the engines are the same, just manifold differences, doesn't the 182 have a tubular 4-2-1 manifold as std?

It is used but back converted to phase 1 setup for the cable TB matey you will also need a phase 1 plenium for the ICV (you can use phase 2 plenium but idle will be a little rough) that depends on what ECU you use OE unlocked or aftermarket i.e. adaptronic etc.., it is just easier to get a complete phase 1 setup with all the bits needed than gathering all the bits needed to convert back.

Phase 1 / 2 172 manifold is 4-1
182 is 4-2-1

ok cheers all,

so i could use a phase 1 full setup but with the 182 manny ? Thus getting a little more umph?

Ecu would be a unlocked model to start and get running, although if there is a fair bit extra to be had with a standlone ecu on a standard setup i may go that route. I cant decide wether to blow it at a later date of throttle body it. Ive had enough of turbos recently tbh.

you cant use a 172 or 182 manifolds. you need to make a custom one :)

The standard 172 map will be innacurate if you swap manifolds and other performance related bits remember.

Ashy, is that due to space or route? i do have a little extra room but not that much .

scoff, if Ashy says i need to make a custom manifold for it would ths too change map?. I suppose its silly really trying to retain the ecu anyway, i just want to get it in and running first then mess with that stuff

Nah, not enough for you to notice.

the 172 manifold runs over the top of the clio subframe rather than the under, like it does in the 5. the std manifold exits too high and hits the bulkhead!! choppy choppy is required i'm afraid!

Couple of pics of Parts required to fit it in an r5 in here There is also has a pic of ashys custom manifold. Also plenty of info in the project section aswell matey

cheers James, what exhaust stystem do people usually use on these 172 n/a convertions? Id guess i have to ditch the sidey?

Ashy

i started off with a normal scorpion then changed to a sidey!!

if you run it in na form I would recomend a rear exit system when turbo obviously sidey matey.

was thinking the sidey would not work too well in N/A so a rear exit would be needed. Ashy i bet the sidey was a little on the loud side :D

I ran the sidey on mine in na and it was very very loud matey in fact sounded like a chavved up nova :(

I tried a porsche box as they normally have just one silencer and even that was too loud for me.. I settled for an elise, it's still loud but not ridiculous only problem is it weighs so much :( ... n/a are so much louder as they haven't got the turbo to suppress the noise.
