hey folks, the pug boys seems to be loving non sunroof model 205s over the sunroof versions, claiming the non sunroof models weigh more or the shell not being as strong as a non sunroof version

well seeing as the pug boys think the non sunroof models are the more appealing, what do we think on here about the gtt? are the non sunroof gtt worth more? better shells?

I have always been under the asumption that non sunroof models of any cars are slightly lighter and stronger. I know that it's easier to fit a roll cage sometmes on models without sunroofs. My gtt is non and the saxo is sunroof, And is very solid , there is no play whatsoever in the saxo, but that's been polybushed allround, and havn't driven the gtt enough to compare.

non sunroof less chance of rust on the roof

Non sunroof is less weight, and more importantly it's less weight high up.

So in theory a car without a sunroof will handle better as you want to have what weight there is as close to the ground as possible.

Non sunroof is best, no leaks...

what about back in the day when people would take an angle grinder to a non sunroof model and make a sunroof? did they even bother strengthening it? these must be lighter than a non sunroof model then if there was a chunk missing in the roof, altho the body would of been weakened

:agree: Totally agree there, thats why when I purchased my last GT Turbo I made sure there was no sunroof

the glass will weigh more than the same amount of normal metal roof surley , so the sunroof model will be heavier

correct! :agree: just cos you can see through it doesn't mean it's lighter ;)

But are the sunroof models not strengthened elsewhere to prevent twisting and deforming, the roof provides a hell of a lot of strength and rigidity to a shell.

not strenthened anywhere else.

Not sure how much strength the roof adds to the 5.. i have no head lining and the roof panel is like a sheet of tin foil i can't see it giving much bracing to the shell.

Its not just a sheet of metal, its the shape of it, we took the roof panel off a mini then rolled it into the body shop, when it was time to weld the roof panel on it was a mile out, we had to use ratchet straps to straighten the shell to get the roof to fit!

heat rises , sunroofs are good for them times when we have to have the heaters on full bore to stop overheating !

my old 5 didn't have a sunroof, and the roof used to pop in at 80mph with a window down...

both of mine now have sunroofs, bit annoying as the raider one is sealed shut, and the one on my orange one meant i had to sell my full SD cage as it wouldn't fit

a sunroof is a must!!!!!, think about it ur with ur missus or some random gal, and you breakdown!, and if like me you have back seats in the car and a cage, the front seats dont recline very much, so if u havnt got a sunroof it must be bloody uncofertable servicing ur missus, so get a sunroof and you can pop it open and she can put her legs out of it and enjoy :D
and if shes some random gal thats not really very nice to look at u could even stand up with ur head out the window so u dont even have to look at her....and thats a propper brucey :agree:

Think about that man.. you really think a piece of glass, and all the opening mechanism, etc is really going to be as light as a small sheet of wafer thin metal :wasntme:

quality post, however im desperately looking for a non sunroof 205 to chop the roof of and weld onto mine.

Reason being ,lighter, looks better, and less to go wrong.

My roof hasn't been strengthened. When you shut the doors the roof bobs a little from it :cartman:
