after me and my m8 had re-done all the valves and stem seals.
i read in the manual that the collets are different for exhaust/inlet.
can anyone confirm this? as im sure they all looked the same?

also i seem to have misplaced the locating dowel which goes with one of the middle head bolts. is this a must to put the head back on?
or will it be ok without it?

thanks:agree:

collets are the same, you can use a spare starter motor dowel if you have one as im sure there exactly the same.

YES...in my opinion it's a must have.....

the head "turns" on this on removal so the liners are not lifted when you remove the head....
you also know its spot on when it slips over the dowel

I would also go with a yes.

Across the bolt holes theres got to be some play with no locator.

As far as I can remember the collets are the same. :D

Some starters jump and don't locate very well if the dowel is missing others it doesn't seem to matter. I have done head gaskets were the dowel was missing and in a hurry late at night and no shops open I have refitted the head so I can get the car on the road, but it does make like alot easier if it is present as already mentioned it helps you line you the head bolt holes and keep things in place. Use the starter one as it is much easier to replace that than remove the head again.
Hope this helps
