View Full Version : Wont idle, running rough
Currently running in my car after rebuild,
So far done 60miles with just a few minor probs odd oil leak etc. Went to go for a drive in it tonight and it will not idle every time you come upto a junction it stalls revs just drop.If it does idle its rough and gets lower and lower until it stalls. It has been like this from cold, and when its warmed up.
When its running it drives ok apart from feeling a little hesitant.
The past couple of days its been fine.
The carb is fully refurbed and was running fine.
Ive cleaned the idle jet.
Removed DV incase that was leaking
What else can i do? is it worth adjusting the idle?
is the mixture screw still in situ

Yeah thats still there, its quite lose should it be tight?
will try and get a fuel filter tomorrow.
anything else?
clean the idle jet again, while warm and afterward set the mixture. its common for the jet to block a few times after the carb has been apart or disturbed.
Will clean it again tommorrow,
To set up the mixture do i screw it right in then undo it some many turns?if so roughly how many turns?
Is the idle screw worth looking at or should that be ok?

without a AFR gauge connected ive always set the idle mixture by "eye" you can hear when the engines happy :)

Sounds to me as though you could have an air leak. When the carb was sorted did you use a gasket for the base? was it old or new?......in my opinion the gaskets are crap, just use silicone sealant.
How does the car run if you pump the brakes a few times? When idling pump the brakes a dozen times and see if the revs drop. If this happens i would also suggest to check the brake servo, possibly air trapped. Or check the valve in the inlet.
If you want to adjust the idle, this is very easy. There is a screw that sits beneath the accelerater spring on the left hand side as if you were looking at the carb from the driver's wing. It sits at an angle with head pointing towards you.
Also when the carb was put back together was the black 'o' put back, as this can cause problems
Boost hoses all good?
These are just a few ideas, hope they help.
update,
Ive tinkered with the carb, mixture and idle and it still wont idle.
And then after wiggling all the pipes around near carb:wasntme: it started and idled fine. didnt know what i touched or what i done so switched it off went inside washed hands came back out thought i will take it round block, started it up and im back to square one.
Now i dont know if it was a coinadance playing around with the wires and pipes around carb or not.
What can have affects on the idle?
Ive cleaned the idle jet many times, ive took the fuel pipe of carb and theres plenty of fuel coming through.
Its also difficult to start have to pump accelerator, and hold accelrtor down once started else the revs just fall.
If i put choke on it needs to be almost full and it idles at 2k but not smooth, sounds like a misfire.
Ive checked the ht leads and dizzy cap, they are all new and still look as new after 60miles.
sorry for the essay just want to get this sorted as it was fine the other day and now overnight just wont work.
any help appreacated.
thanks
Fixed it, woohoo:cool:
Still not 100% on what it was but the three things i did before it started was Clean idle jet again 5th time:crap:.
Then the tdc sensor, where it connects near bulk head was cabletied to some other wires to keep tidy but the wires looked to be doubled back on themselves so cut cabletie and straigtned wires out.
And finally one of the breather pipes was in its holder on top of inlet but was being pinched together so was quiet narrow so took it out holder.
So one of those things solved it:agree: I thiunk it may be the tdc sensor so going to replace it.
Now just got to fix the next problem which is offside front brake sticking on so im guessing ive got grease the sliders.
thanks everyone
