I realise that if i'm having to ask this I probably shouldn't be thinking about it but I am seriously considering this as a project

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHASE-1-RENAULT-5-GT-TURBO-PEARL-WHITE-SPARES-OR-REPAIR_W0QQitemZ270438985624QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAut omobiles_UK?hash=item3ef76b6f98&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Are there any issues/pitfalls as to the fact that it's a ph1 as opposed to a 2? Spares are going to be more difficult but how much more?
I'm ready to be dissuaded from doing this as I have enough on my plate at the moment but it's a pearl phase 1 with it seems a sound body so do your worst.

There's also the fact that i'm a total novice really.

If you can, buy it. It'll be a fun project.
The only Phase 1 part I've found hard to get was a front bumper. Everything else kit wise you can buy new.

A few bits are unavailable now. Stuff like front struts are difficult to find. All bodykit parts are obsolete and interior trim. But nothing that a bit of hunting around, or learning what certain words on ebay france mean. I use mine everyday, i've done well over 30,000 miles since ive owned it. The cars done over 150k. Bits keep dropping off but you stick them back and carry on. 23 years old and still can kick it's heals up, imo they look better than a phase2 as well

LOL, the operative word was dissuade but keep it coming. Any opinions on the car with the limited info from the link.

Have a good look over it for rust, the pics dont show much imo. A mate of mine bought a garage stored ph1 years ago, from what looked to be a good shell on the outside turned into a weldathon :sad2:

Still, it looks fairly complete so worth a look if your after a project.

If you don't want it I think the club should group together and buy it and restore it

Hoolio

If I go for it it'll be the club restoring it by proxy anyway :-) I'll be needing help.

It says in the listing it has p1 front seats, just not fitted/pictured

Yeah it does say that they are there but they are not pictured so is a concern.

Anyway I'm hopefully going to see this tomorrow so what about stuff like the carpet was it originally red or grey? anything like this info will be useful. Also I sort of know my way around a 5 now (ish) without pulling it apart how and where should I be looking for the dreaded rust. It's clearly a non runner at the mo so any handy hints gained through experience would be really helpful

Dig about on the sills a bit, & the rear arch area also, they are favoroute places for rust, inner wings also. Just have a really good look under it as from the piccies it looks good but nothing from under it... where all the troubles can lie.
Pretty sure when I asked he said if it were him he would replace the brake lines as they are a little corroded, he seemed an honest sort of chap as I spoke to him via email & on the phone as I was seriously thinking about it for myself but am buying a different car now that came up. (sorry non-renault)
He said it would make a nice restoration project.

common places for rust on ph1's ive seen were under battery tray ,window surround , up above pedals under the dash, corners of quarters , tail gate ,sills and behind the rear bumper , i went to see 1 the other week there and there was rust in all of the above places :crap:

the operative word was dissuade

Don't buy it if you want it to be as easy as a Ph2 to restore. It wont be.

In what respect? I have to admit my sensable head has reappeared thos afternoon, I just don't want such a rare one to be broken.

I've tried from Renault before and they say no. Whether thats just that particular dealer or as a whole im unsure.

I ended using red trim tape on my old phase 1.

Bob at CGB sorted me out a roll of the red strip when I bought a pbumper from him earlier this year. I threw away the wrapper with the part number and forgot to write it down :dearme:
He might be able to help you out with it.

Did a club member win this as the bidding has ended?

Hoolio
15-08-2009, 09:43
I was going to ask the same question. I had an attack of common sense and took myself out of the running, I realise this is a rare commodity when it comes to 5's but although J510 may look mint there is a lot that I want to do and I thought if I bought another I'd take my eye off the ball.

I am seriously regreting it now.

In respect to the small number of RTOC members that can give sound advice on Ph1 specific items, and indeed because of the unavailability of certain parts peculiar to the Ph1.

You need a list of the differences between the phases? That's been discussed as many times as d/v's over the years. Do a search, there was a definitive thread on that a while ago.

Of course if you're not bothered about keeping it original Ph1, all this barely matters.
