Just checked & I can find half a cork gasket left in my bag-o-spares that I've had from when I re-built my engine.

That gasket would have come from the GSF Head Gasket Set I bought when I did the head.

I didn't use the cork gaskets on my sump becasue it said they're not used on Turbo engines so i used a HEAP of sealant instead & i'm STILL plagued by friggin oil leaks on my engine!:mad::mad:

I'm going to pull it out again this winter sometime & get try & fix the oil leaks once & for all!!

This thread has got me thinking i'll have a go with the Cork Sump Gasket if I too can find another one??

My only concern though is that the cork will pull the sump off the seals on the end of the crankshaft & make things worse??

I don't know I've never had a sump gasket in any of the kits I've bought!

Can't see a sump gasket on Dialogys ... the part number on that website (7701 466 416) comes up as:

GASKET SET R19+ £41.90

i really cant see why so many people have problems sealing the sump.

assuming its clean and you have scraped off all the old sealant its usually ok.

you also need to do two distinct lines of sealant
- the first on the inside edge of the sealing area - looping inwards around the bolt holes.
- the 2nd over the raised portions of the sealing area -inbetween the bolt holes, but loop around the outside of each bolt hole.

you also need to put sealant where the horseshoe seal sits. - wipe it flat with your finger in a dirty sanchex style motion.

make sure you put extra where the 'ears' of the horseshoe seals sit.

also make sure you seal the horseshoe seals into the block/timing cover area.

when its put together, start at the middle of each sump side and work towards the horseshoe seals. Then wipe extra sealant over the top of the exposed side of horseshoe seal on both the timing chain end and g/b end.

let the sealant set before you add the oil.

I done the same as you described sparkie & the half moon seal still leaks. There is a perfect bead of mastixo under the seal & the oil weeps underneath:disagree: Not much but enough to annoy me:mad:

Edit - i did get it to seal better when i had engine out, but it did have a couple of weeks to go off. Maybe 48 hrs wasnt long enough for the mastixo to go off properly.

When I worked at Honda, I used the sealant we used on the engines there for both the timing chain cover and sump, cant for the life of me remember the name :)

That sealant was pretty ****ing good :agree:

As soon as I have a name, I'll stick it up here.

mmmmmmmm prices for the gasket seems a bit OTT! I guess I'll have to have a go with the sealant! I keep on getting leaks from the half moons! :'( I guess I'll just ahve to fill it full of sealant too!
