View Full Version : Urgent help please.....
from the previous post carb top sitting to high.... http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=8799
The carb is not the problem as i fitted the new one today and its sits exactly the same.
Therefore my engine must be sitting too high?
i really need some help or advice on this what to do now as i cant understand whats happened, its sitting on brand new engine mounts and bolted down but the HT leads, carb top, breather pot, water pump to degasing pot are all catching on the bonnet.
Does anyone know what this could be? i really would be very greatfull for some help.
Please see other thread for more pictures.
Thanks Shane.
Are the engine mounts new? Or are they the orginal ones? I can't think of anything else that would make the engine sit higher other than the brackets and mounts
The brackets are the standard ones and the mounts are uprated ones from CGB.
Do you still have the orginal mounts? I would be tempted to compare / measure the mounts
no i don't, im going to take the mounts off and fit them again to see if that makes any difference.
I managed to find the old mounts, i fitted them on and put the engine back in and it still sits exactly the same. (it looks to high)
i also put the bonnet on and it touches the carb top with no clearance, im sure this is not right.
Any one have any ideas please, i will post up some pics in a sec so people can see if everything looks how it should.
Thanks.
Im absoutly fed up with this car now:cry:
Here is a load of pictures can anyone see anything thats wrong. surely the brackets can only be fitted one way.
All the mounts are the same size as the old ones. any help will be great ive had this engine in and out 5 times today and it still the same.

A stardard carb top is 2 1/2" height, going from the plate on top of the carb where the O ring and 3x 10mm nuts live to the top clearance point. you have about 1/2" then clearance to the bonnet. Your carb top looks too proud to me. Have a measure?
Thanks for the reply, My carb top is 85mm tall. and as been fitted and tested on another 5.
When i had the engine fitted earlier the bonnet would close but the carb top was resting on the bonnet lining with no gap so any movment in engine may result in denting the bonnet.
Im temted to refit the engine and buy a standard carb top as the size differance will give me enough clearance.
Its just really weird as loads of pople run lobsters with no problems but mine is catching.
Does everything else on my pictures look correct and in right postions?
thanks again

?lift your bonnet. The catch is adjustable 10mm nut holds it in place
Maybe with your new mounts giving alittle extra height and the lobster, its properly too close for comfort. Try using the original rear mount (one at the back) as it might give that extra flop to solve your problem :agree: Everything else looks good, Very GOOD :D.
Thanks:cool:
It begins to drive you crazy when you stand there looking at the engine, wondering what the F**k is wrong with it as everything else looks ok:cry:
Im going to refit the engine with a standard lobster and see how i get on.
Im happy with that as long as there isnt anything else that it could be as im going to be plumbing it back in so dont want to have to lift it all out again! just wanted to double check that nobody could spot anything that ive done wrong:ashamed:
thanks again
So we sure everyhting else is ok. :crap:
just making sure before i put it back in tomorrow.

check that the bolts going through the gearbox for the rear mount are going through the right holes in the bracket!i seem to recall a choice of holes either in the bracket or gearbox!!:)

i was about to mention the same thing, im sure there 4 bolt holes in the side of the rear engine mount i think.? you may have located the mount via the wrong holes.?

i had a look and the only holes i could get it to line up with were the ones that i put the bracket onto.
has anyone got any pics of the rear mount bracket attatched to the gearbox and the rear mount to the car?

does sit very high carb top looks very large
you have a very red and nice loooking crane.
dont mean to sound like im taking the piss.
A. is your gear box bolted to the right holes in the block, its not sitting turned a hole out is it?
B. your engine mounts possibly to large, pop old ones on see if problem goes away,
c. are your front mounts in the right places
guys - look at where the rear mount bracket is attached to the box. - the little rubber seal (he's sprayed it silver) that covers the hole - where n/a speedo cables go, isnt that usually MUCH LOWER inside the triangular bracket?
yup that speedo cable part on the box definatley looks like its to high up. like the mount needs to be higher
:coffee:As anyone got a detail picture of the rear engine mount bracket fitted to the block? just so i can compare, i cannot see any other way of getting the bracket to line up other then the way have i got it.
thanks for the help guys:cool:
Heres a picture ive found ive got my bracket bolted the circled holes:crap:

Hmmm, looking at this I'm not so sure, it looks v. similar

maybe its just when that mount takes the weight it goes down then....
That bracket won't move. It's hard to tell from the photos, but I can't tell if the brackets are at the same angle. From memory I don't remember there being a choice of holes.
Shane ... is this the same gearbox that came out of the car originally?
yeah same gearbox.
maybe it will drop when it settles in?
Shane, when you say you fitted a new one, do you mean from the same seller ?
If so try to get a standard top from somewhere to test, it looks to me like the carb top still sits a bit proud ?
Can't see it being the mounts if you say they are the same as the old ones (you did check they were the same yes? ) so it can only be that, the oil seperator does sit close to the bonnet anyway as it has a 90 deg take off... & i'm pretty sure my leads touched the bonnet..

Hi i had the same problem with my lobster being to high but i had quite a thick base where it bolts to the carb so i got it machined down abit to fit snug as a bug might be an option
