any ideas on how to get the main bearings out from between the crank and the block. ive got a couple of the caps off and tried turning the crank with a spanner and they just aint moving.

You have to remove the crank to do the main bearings.

so if i were to be checking whether they have had it would i just be checking the shell in the cap or would i have to check both halves

Check the shell in the cap and the crank surface itself, you can't check the bearing behind the crankl so you only have the one in the crank to go on.

Normally though if one shows wear the others gone too.

ive just removed all 5 bottom halves and checked the shells and crank and there is only some light scoring on the shells. can there be a few light scrathes or have the gotta be spotlessley clean

its not a very good pic but this is the worse one if u can c the score on it. also on closer inspection the top of the shell dosent seem worn on the side without that little cut out

For the price of them I would put new in while you have it apart. Only my opinion though!

You have to remove the crank to do the main bearings.

fail.

you can change all except the upper one closest to the timing chain in situ.
use a feeler gauge to push the main shells round.

if you wanted to change the last shell, you'd have to take the chain tensioner off...

;)

could the crankshaft be distorted where the shells sit because when i removed the shells there was only wear on the bottom of the shells but the top half was not worn at all looked brand. i had the crankshaft reground when the engine was out so the shells where .25 when bought. maybe a crap reground could be the answer to my problems. how could i check the crankshaft

you would need to measure the crank journals and make sure the bearings supplied are the correct size for the regrind.

ive measured the journals and they are 54mm. but dont know what size they originally were lol.

Ah didn't realise that mate, must admit i did try once but they wouldn't budge so always pulled the crank out to do them all;)

start by tapping them round with a thin screwdriver first ;)

am well peed off got round to measuring the shells today and they are 54.25 ish so the fooker who was supposed to regrind the crank hasent by the looks of it. i know it sounds silly but can they reground a crank without taking anything off it. ill be out checking the big ends saturday :sad2:. at least i know why its knocking :)

Now to regrind the crank you will have to take the crank out the engine, thats for sure:D

Erm ive got a crank for sale if it helps. It would certainly help me lol.

to regrind at the cost of the engineering firm that was supposed to do it in the first place :)
