View Full Version : Refitting my bodykit skirts
Im having a pair of new sills welded onto my r5, however ive noticed on the repair panel they do not have the rivet heads that the clips on the skirts lock onto.
there fore is it a case of measuring up and re-riviting the sills.
If so does anybody have the part number for both the rivits and clips(mine are rotton).. and also rough quantity's of what i will need.
77 03 080 051 = Clips
77 03 072 289 = Rivets
= £22.91 in 2007 :agree:

Renault sell the rivests with special heads, along with the clips. There are 5 each side and you will also need some medium or long nose standard rivets to secire the base of the skirt to the sill (which you may have to drill if youve replaced the panel). Sorry cant remember the part numbers, but all in shouldne be much more than £25 from the dealer.:agree:
damn, £25 or so for a set of clips and rivets, ah well guess i gota buy em.. thieving c**nts lol. Yea ill grab a good sized bag of rivets for the bottom of the sill. Thanks for the help guys , will see how i get on :).

Hi damien, this is job i'm gonna have to tackle in a few months. Any chance of creating a mini project thread of replacing the sills and all the stages with plenty of pics. This would help alot of people out including me. :) cheers andy
Hey mate, as for the actual welding of the sills i simply give it to my friend james who will tackle that side of things buddy, everything else i will photo and comment on in my project thread though mate so will be able to extract whatever you need from there matey. :)
Just spoke to my welder and it sounds like hes real busy so i may not have the sills welded up for a little while, shame as id like it to bring to nats day.. :( ah well

get your missus to do it...she seems quite handy!
haha, i would but i sold my welder before i bothered learning to use it. :disagree:
been to get these parts today..
10x clips £3 or so
10x rivits £47.50 :S Surely that cant be right..
Needless to say i only got the clips
any alternatvies ?

I think I might have some Renault rivets I never used, if you are interested I will take a look?

I have the same job ahead of me...
Can someone please check what the distance from the rivets to the top edge of the sill is?? It's very difficult to measure it when the rivets are missing.....
Another question: I also got the side skirt repair kit from CGB
http://www.cgbmotorsport.net/body-kit-side-skirt-repair-kit-six-items-275-p.asp
What do I use to glue the metal clips onto the plastic skirts?

Well I am interested ;)
araldite should do the job, unless someone knows of something stronger....
I need to refit my sideskirts tomorow but the plastic bits have broken off the back of the skirts, if I'd have known in advance I would have bought the cgb repair kit and new metal clips that hold them to the car,
but
I'm impatient and don't wanna wait lol plus the idea of spending £100 to fit the skirts seems crazy to me, I'm gunna rivet the bottoms on but foam the tops to the sills.
Will let you know how I get on in the afternoon lol

I know... I already pm'ed stu thc too ;)
And what I meant was that I got those repair clips for my side skirts. I was just wondering how they attached it in the picture from CGB
id suggest using an epoxy resin mate.. get a good thinners to clean the area down, and a bit of 80 grade sand paper or somthign to rough it up and give it a good key.
Expanding foam m8, I use it for everything lol.
It holds my rear bumper on lol.

:wasntme:
one word - sikaflex ;)
 the first time i ever met you, at jct27 before the shrines do, you got out the car, shut the door and the sill trim fell off :wasntme:
to be fair i think you'd just painted it the day before!
'tis true, Vauxhall, 46p each when i bought them. Ask for body trim rivets ;)
before I discovered sikaflex

i drilled little holes and popped rivited the clips to the car, then covered them in some rubbery glue to protect from rust.. only did this as i was in a rush to get it done on my student budget:D

Is this serious or are you just joking? :crap: I was just looking at the website for product info and it does seem like good stuff. If you're serious... which one did you use? ;) Sikaflex 291 or 292?
sweet nice one stu, ill be paying a visit to vauxhall.. I used to use expanding foam, tiger seal , and sikaflex on everything but id prefer to steet away from that lot.

I assume it would be Opel in Holland? We don't have Vauxhall dealers here...
Well I am interested ;)
I will try and search them out if you want, I bought them years ago and did not use them. If I find them you can have them:)

I bought some of these rivets by mistake and couldnt return them. They ar ethe best part of £3 each.
I still have 10 sitting around if no luck in Vauxhall. I'll sell them a bit less to recoupe my pennies through stupidity.
and yes, that was £30 on rivets
Well my skirts are now fitted, by foam. Gotta love that stuff.

Yes very serious jan, it's automotive stuff, for body kits and whatever else you can think off. I use 221, you find it on ebay all the time (because I'm too lazy to go out and buy it).
scotchy up the areas of sill you are going to bond to, do the same to the lugs on the inside of the body kit, and use a big dolop of sikaflex where each lug goes, squidge it into position and then tape it up while it goes off. you can rivit the bottom sill edge if you want, or bond that as well. bond is probably better since water isn't going to get in then.
also, make sure your new side skirt rubber edge things are inplace, stuck to the side skirt before you bond the whole lot onto the car.

Alright... I'll give it a go :agree:
Do I really have to sand that beautiful fresh new paint? :( I guess so huh...
Oh and by the way... which lugs do you mean?
by lugs I mean the lumps on the inside of the side skirt, that the metal clips normally clip into (you know, the bits that have normally snapped off!)

Never mind mate... I'm going for the Sikaflex option ;) But thanks anyway!
:agree:
I thought about the Sikaflex option to. I think you can put windscreens in with it to!
I didn't like the idea of not being able to take them off if i wanted to e.g paint the car again...so made some very crude pikey clips:smokin:
That's y I like the foam, it is removeable if it needs to be. Mine are on there nicely.
I've nut and bolted the bottoms as i'm less likely do any damage when removing/refitting them.
My only concern with sikoflexing the bottoms on is that any water that does get in is then trapped.
And a helpful hint when using sikoflex is, heat it up first and it's a lot easier to use.
And yes it is used for bonding windscreens, any Windscreen bond can be used, and is probably easy/cheaper to get.
it's a doddle, you remove the rubber seal and cut the sealant with a stanly knife ;) good point re sikaflexing the bottoms, the trick is to only do it with blobs every 6" or so, so as not to seal the lot in.
does the foam not collect water ?

Once the foam has gone off it seals itself and is then water/flame retardant.
I put a bead across the top of the skirt, that way water shouldn't get in but if it does it can drain from the bottom.
