Yelow is the 12v supply for the regulator, thats goes closest to engine. Purple is alternator warning light, that goes to front of the car.

Its n ot ideal to swap them about as you can burn out the regulater in the alternator

The big terminal with a 10mm nut on it will be 12v constant as its feed driectly from the battery via the starter motor

both wires will apear live with a multimeter since the battery warning lamp has 12v on the other side of it. the alternator switches it to earth.

Make sure the connectors fit nice and tight as they can loosen over time which will give you a flickering battery light. Have you tried the wires the other way round?
