View Full Version : New lock or locksmith?

As some of you may have read, I had the keys and fobs for my r5 stolen. I have just called a lock smith who said that he can come out and sort me some new keys but it will probably take him about 2 hours at £60 and hour + vat!!

Now I know that I will be able to break into the car easy enough and I can probably override the alarm and immobiliser once I find the switch and put it into valet mode. But the question I have is would it just be cheaper to just change the locks? The passenger door is already knackered due to someone breaking in and I already had a delocked door to replace it. The alarm system is keyless but it does not always unlock due to the age of the car and old parts. What do you guys think would be the best way to go about this?

Replace the locks. Might be more expensive than having new keys cut, but at least you'll have the piece of mind that whoever stole the keys can't get into the car if they come looking for it.

call your insurance, if you got a crime number they should cover keys on fully comp, worth a go mate :agree:
you may have to fork out first but they should pay you back

I do not have any insurance on the car mate, its sorn and locked up in a nice safe place. The keys were stolen out of my other car so the theives will have no idea where it is. There really was not point in them taking them..

Yeah I see your point but there is nothing in this thread that tells you where my car is.

I did exactly the same thing mate, so i bought a second hand set of locks, ignition barrel and petrol cap with keys and just fitted them my self. Only took bout an hour and cost me £45:)

ah i see, thats gutting, well what if you say it was broken in and my other car keys were in there, surely they must be able to do something!

only way i sugest you could get in is take the rear window out climb over to the front and pop the locks and the bonnet and then disconnect the alarm, at least your in the car that way, and then he may be able to get the numbers off the barrel, or if you get one of the locks out, a lock smith will get the numbers and cut you a new key
then pop along to a alarm shop, or maybe back to the shop that fitted it for you and reprogramme a fob, but thats at least 70 for the fob :disagree::disagree:

shame about your keys :disagree:

You can open the doors on a 5 with a tennis ball, universal remotes, etc etc :coffee:(almost as good as reversing vx nova's hazard switch round lol) but thats for another day & def not on public boards .It's starting them that's a ball ache IMO ...

Save yer self some grief ,just delock the doors but leave the boot as an access just in case lol .An ignition barrel can be sourced via a 5,clio or 19 if memory serves me right .

certain older cars (-mercs?) - use air or fluid to operate the central locking.- the tennis ball sucker idea was for use on that type of car.
the nova - hazard switch 'reverse', has been around for years too.

well id eat the tennisball if you broke in to a merc with one,
still a load of cods wollop,
the air systems on mercs are a inclosed mechinisam and i very very much doubht it would work, like i say it wont magicly pop the pins into the right postions and unlock, and as the lock has atturly got to turn at the same time, totaly impossible

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I am currently waiting for a repacement fob and I will then manually override the system (Just need to find the switch so that I can enter the pin number!) Luckly I have a spare ignition key so I think that seen as one door will be delocked I will just do the same to the other. From what I remember it unlocks ok remotely but struggles to lock. Does anyone have any ideas how I can go about sorting this?

Thanks in advance.
