well that depends on the what cable running from the motherboard to your drive

one is master and one would be slave. the cable from the main board goes to the hardrive is normally the master.

i think its something silly like that :(
in fact i might have messed them cables up a bit somehow .
there are 3 multi pin sockets (female) on the motherboard .
i think the small one is for the floppy drive which i have not got .
the other 2 are identical in size and number of pins .

is one of them for hard drive and the other for the dvd drive ?
if so how do i know which is which

the top one of the 2 is the primary location which i have running to my hard drive which is set to master.

the secondary location below is running to my dvd drive which is set to slave.

have you updated the drivers or firmware for your drive? also an option.

we should get there soon lol

hmm my dvd drive was deffo set to CSEL(what ever that means) for some reason .
will check the cable connections etc and report back .

i have done a lot to this pc since my 80gb hd fried up .
stuck in a 10gb hd from my ancient pc etc .
does not help when you dont know what you are doing

If your drive is being recognised in Device Manager then I doubt it's a jumper issue with the drive. CSEL stands for cable select, so if this is the only drive on the IDE cable it should be recognising fine. So you've tried various drives but have you changed the IDE cable (data cable to the motherboard)? Have you tried a different slot in the motherboard (i.e. swap over the two ports, although if the hard drive is working I doubt this is your problem either)? And probably the most important thing to try is a totally different DVD, you'd be surprised at how many DVD's fail!

What kind of DVD's are you putting in as well, proper DVD movies? DVD-R's? DVD-RW's? I'm just thinking that if you are trying to play a movie maybe your machine is missing important codecs to play it using whatever media player you use...
