hi there the engine was rebuilt about 3 months ago all new big ends mains crank reground new pistons liners rings timing chain tensioner oil pump head gasket and bolts. the carb has had a rebiuld. and the head was skimmed. the prob is that since the rebuild there has been a tapping noise coming from the engine. ive taken the sump off to check all the main and big end shells and no play there. tried taking the rocker cover off and checking the tappets and adjusting and chaged the push rods put it all back and its still tapping. the only time it goes away is when i rev it at 4-5k then after 5-10 second the noise comes back. any help cause its a pain in the arse

If theres a hissing from the carb and its running crap first thing i'd check is that the mixture screw hasn't wound itself out? Its located on the left hand side (as you look at it) of the carb, may possibly be a white cap covering it.

hope that helps a little

Sounds quite like mine but a bit worse. I've had the piston slap diagnosis.

try running the engine and pulling off a plug lead one by one see if you can make the noise change .
i think it might be piston grab

pulling off a plug lead might help with identifing wich cyl it is

You could get away with just changing the cylinder at fault and save some cash.
Do what The Master said to help you find which one(s) gone.

ive done this already and as it goes it still knocks on all cylinders dont matter what plugs off. the only thing with this is that every time i take a lead off its gives me an electric shock lol fun times

i know the only thing i done was see if it was loose in ther liner. as for the mains ill have them all of tommorrow and check them. and i think ill just have to stick one of the old liner + piston wit new rings in for the minute till i save up for another bottom end build.

be sure to check all pistons not just the one

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

I have had the same noise when we rebuilded my engine with a complete set of pistons, linears, rings from Reichard Motorsport. Than I have sent the whole set back and they have chenged it. The clearances between the linears ant the pistons were about 0.1mm. But unfortunately we haven't measured it before building it into the engine.
