Just noticed tonight that after driving a while and the engines hot, 2nd gear seems tight, and reverse is impossible to engage, but if i let it cool down, goes back to being nice and smooth?

any ideas anyone?

oil change needed, oil is getting to thin,

or maybe clutch on wy out and slips when hot

lazy finger springs on the clutch?

could be a few things

check out the clutch via the inspection hole

It was a new clutch i put in when i rebuilt the engine so it should be ok. I'll see about changing my gearbox oil, what grade is best?

i'd go for duchams semi-synthetic 75-90ws

sure its not contaminated? gearbox seal could be leaking?

try the oil first, go from there, if not you could find the syncro meshes are buggered, do you change gear quickly like me?

i change gear so fast the turbo gadge dont drop nor does it have enoth time to relase its boost lol

i know before long ill have trouble selecting 2nd im feeling it stuggling to change gear at the moment so wont be long!

Nah not really, haven't really changed up to quick as i'm running the engine in. Also i am running a short shifter. Only have a problem once it gets hot, leave it for 30mins or so then its fine again

gotta defently be oil then, as a syncro would be all the time,

when was the last time you changed oil

im betting you didnt change with rebuild?

Have you got the correct oil in the box?

FurioKid

i have a b&m shifter an have fresh 75/90 semi syn oil an every so often
my box/selector seems to tighten up,no unbearable but do wonder why it does
it.usually after a long run....?

i suffer the same problem with the b&M short shift , it really got annoying after my drive to pod , im sure its the heat from the exhaust expanding the bearing on the shifter or something to do with the gear stick housing going tight when hot ,i tried using some high temp grease but didnt work , next step was to get some exhaust wrap for the section thats under there or try and make some sort of heat sheild .

Maybe a email to B&M is required ??

i thought that to,bit of expansion going on...maybe some exhaust wrap would
help the situation??...

Ah i see i ain't the only one. I've got some spare heat wrap at home so i'll put some on and see if it'd work?

also how much gearbox oil did you put in the gearbox filling it up 2 much will cause a problem getting it into gear ?

K just checked and its EP80W-90 GL5 mineral gear oil that i used, just filled to the fill bung hole

ive been using the mobile 1 diff oil and im almost 99% sure it has nothing to do with the gearbox side ,its most definetly to do with the b&M short shift stick getting affected by the heat .

I'm gonna see about heat wrapping the exhaust that sits next to the linkage, and also see if i can wrap the gear linkage without restricting movement

i once fitted the wrong oil in my box, i could drive around untill the car was up to temp then i would loose all gears.i had to turn off the engine, select second then drive home in second. turned out to be wrong oil.

but is EP80W-90 GL5 mineral gear oil the wrong oil??

im sure it should be 75w-90w but not sure if its semi synthetic or mineral needed.

should it be 75w/90 semi synthetic then?

Got myself some 75W/90 semi synthetic gear oil today so i'll change my gearbox oil either tonight or in the morning and go from there

FurioKid

Right well changed my gearbox oil tonight and roatested it home and found it no better, guess i'll be heat wrapping the exhaust and linkage tomoz to see if that improves it??

Adjust the linkage.......

FurioKid
19-06-2009, 22:14
but its spot on when its cold, only gets tight when it gets hot?!

Adjusting it will cost you nothing......heat wrap and a load of other expensive bollox will be a pain in the arse, especially if it makes no difference to the gearchange....is the gear selector rod under the car bent? Did the car ever ground out? If a clutch was changed, did the small selector rod on the bottom of the gearbox get bashed/bent?

FurioKid

The linkage is slighty bent cos i had to move it from hitting the exhaust, but i did adjust it afterwards and all gears seem spot on, but now after 200 miles reverse and 2nd get tight when hot
