My laptop only has the "male" serial port, as most others do, how have other people got around running there LM/LC stuff with laptops?

I was thinking something along the lines of http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/416G8F1vAdL._SS500_.jpg
Any other ideas would be appreciated. Cheers Chris

Male serial port, im guessing you mean the screen connection.

As for the USB to serial connector, I had one, but found it rubbish, did not like working sometimes and in the end gave up totally. Im now in the lookout for a laptop with a serial port on.

I used the converter for my ECU, first off it just liked cutting out randomly, then it didn't like picking up the ECU when plugged in, had to disconnect the converter about 3 times before it used to pick up, then it was getting more and more until the end where it just wont pick it up at all. Plugged it into a laptop with a serial port and worked straight away no troubles.

Have you looked into getting the right serial port put into your laptop, to replace the screen one? Is this a possibility?

Converters are not possible. only way I could possibly see a way round it is by using a pcmcia card if they do one with a serial port on there, this might be more reliable than the converter.

I have a laptop with a serial port, just that something has gone inside and doesn't like installing a new copy of windows on there, shuts down half way through the process, when I get a chance going to take it apart and see whats happening, it might just be the hard drive has had it as there was lots of fatal errors on it when I got the laptop for free.
