check your water level...might be head gasket...or could be fecked turbo - the white smoke is infact white ash, from the burning oil....

water level is fine.
burning oil you say. someone stop me if im way off but..
i think my crankshaft oil seal has gone, the reason may be a popped piston ring causing the crankcase to over pressure. a popped ring would also explain white smoke?
all may have been caused by a blocked carb jet causing me to run lean and pop a ring?
thanks

you need to do a compression check.

i thought this engine had been rebuilt....?

Oil dripping from the flywheel would probably point to a crank seal...

White smoke, however, sounds like water vapour...

Win.

Soooo, why do you have white smoke? That doesn't indicate oil burning...

Ok, does it have an oil smell?

i couldn't say, i had been priming the carb alot and starting it and cranking. it just smelt of petrol.

I meant from the exhaust...

adam, i had a turbo once that caused thick white smoke to come out the exhaust like a smoke machine. i changed the turbo, and it stopped it.
i can only assume, either internal crack to the waterway, or smoke burning in such a way to create white ash, that looks like smoke.

yeah smelt petrol from exhaust

if i take my turbo off tomorrow and run it N/A that would show the turbo as the problem or eliminate it?

ok ive been really busy lately but managed to get back to work on the 5 today. i got it started first time and no oil leak or smoke so i took it for a spin and all looked good. but i noticed it didn't sound very good. upon further inspection cylincer no.1 (clostest to water pump) is not sealing properly on the spark plug. you can see the spark plug washer rattling around and a mist is squirting out of the side of the plug. cross threadded head?
thanks
