Annoying rattle and I dont know where its coming from, Ive had the car up on stands and had my ear to the sump and it does not sound like the bottom end plus its not all the time any ideas? I thought it was the rocker assembley so I replaced it but to no avail.

i heard this on mine today, not in car but with bonnet open and when warming up. as my choke lever dosnt push the cable back, i have to open it every morning, very annoying...

tho when i slightly raised the revs it went away but its like not knocking every time its like a rattle instead, maybe one of the shells going, but its hard to hear over my slightly tappy rockers

Sound like very similar symptoms, if really ****ing me off because it used to do it before I replaced the head and rocker gear but the car still drove well. On fast idle I was seeing around 2 bar on the o.e gauge.

Deffo not a loose bracket or anything, im taking it to the pod what ever even if it dies on the strip, as I rev it it goes away but then on the over run you hear it a little.

I bet this is a ****e job to do with engine in car. Gsf for bits?

Yeah, i changed mine in car, not too bad. Worst bit it getting the bottom of the timing cover to seal back up to the sump, without dropping the sump

Yeah GSF for chain and tensioner

It may be something completely different however.....lets see what other people suggest aswell :)

So it is do-able with the sump still on? I thought they both had to come off?

does that mean head off?
i dont hear mine in car, so maybe mines just starting to wear and not atturly fubared yet?
tho i didnt hear it today, but i was in a rush just flicked the choke and shut the bonnet.so dont think i was paying attention to noises

Is the alloy shield that covers the lower half of the flywheel tight? Mine worked loose & caused a horrible rattle, sounded like bottom end knock!

Noisy water pump/alternator is worth a check, Whip the fan belt off & run it for a few secs to check.

I will give that a go tomorrow as I have booked the day off work to sort it out, I hope its not anything to serious

Not that I want to be a bearer of bad news but I had this once, turned out to be a piston! :(

Sorry to add in ere ...i have the same knocking/rattle ...i took off the belt ..ran it ...first time start rattle went away after a few secs. Second time starting it ...i gave it a wee rev and when it went back to idle the noise appeared.

The noise is coming from the water pump area ..if that helps.

Could it be the tensioner thats gone? ..would it be a case of just putting a new chain and tensioner on to sort it?

Piston slap, cam, timing chain, valve clearances........it could be a few things
