The tappets on my r5 appear to have got pretty noisy recently. Going to follow haynes guide to reset them. Ive seen folks do it pretty often but ive never had a car with adjustable tappets before so will be somthing to learn i guess.. :) any tips when doing this.

No thats just making life easy.

When u do your tappets its worth checking the oil is reaching them, if the channel from thehead is blocked they can get very noisey

hmm,, you say the chanlel from the head, is this going to be a case of ... remove rocker cover, and remove the king lead and see if when turned over, oil is getting to the head.

Its a case of removing the rocker shaft and seeing if oil comes of the channel in the pedistal nearest the flywheel, does mean you'll have reset all the vlave clearences from scratch and its a git to do with out removing the pedistals completely but that would mean removing 4 head bolts which is not great if ya just fitted a new HG

with regards to this presvious post ive bumped back up. As my r5 has recently been broken however is now working again due to a live direct off the battery the car now seems to have very noisy tappets , and a lack of power, the engine sounds so tinny and not as it used to, last night i was sure it was only my immagination, however this mornign when i started the car i decided it definatley wasnt. My question is what are the valve clearances as im going to run through and check them all i think.

i got a good way of doing them wrote down at my unit but if memory serves me right they go...

Inlet-Exhaust-Exhaust-Inlet-Inlet-Exhaust-Exhaust-Inlet

you get the opposite ones rocking ie the end ones then adj the other end and the same in the middle etc quite easy when you know how.....

that rule of 9 don't work apparently correctly on R5s

Haynes way is good enough. Replace the rocker cover gasket whist on with it, they tend to leak when reused & only a couple of ££.

I do mine 0.15(0.006) and 0.20(0.008). I think you'll find a lot of people on here do the same. :agree:
