just read this
What fuel is best to use?
The GT Turbo was designed for 97-99 RON leaded four star petrol in the UK. However, as leaded fuel wasn't present in all the places it's sold, it's probably safe to use unleaded without any significant damage to the valve seats occurring. The main problem is the octane (RON) rating. You should use 98RON Super Unleaded, 99RON Shell Optimax or 98RON leaded four star. If you're stuck, a fiver's worth of 95RON Premium Unleaded will get you to somewhere that sells Super or Optimax, but due to it's lower octane running Premium Unleaded will cause engine damage if used on boost for any length of time. Stay well away from Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) - although it's octane rating is good, it contains lead substitutes that attack the turbo internals due to the high temperatures there.
im confused now, do i use 4 star or carry on using normal 97?
i thought unleaded in a car designed for 4 star leaded dint last long?
thng is i fill up at 4 diffrent stations, depended on were i am when im low and depended on what direction im going from my house. and one is so expencive for super i dont bother
so should i make the effort to go get super or will i make no diffrence?
thing is with the car eating 14/17mpg i dont realy earn enoth to keep feeding it super

Depends on the car IIRC GT Turbo's have hardened valve seats and so are ok to run unleaded. Mines been running unleaded for years. I normally go for higher octane stuff as I'm running slight ignition advance. I don't really know much about this sort of stuff so someone else will probably come along and give you a better answer.
If you have a quick search back through previous threads, you'll see that it's perfectly fine to run c1j's on 95ron fuel.
Obviously the more boost/ignition timing you run, the higher the ron rating you may have to run.
ive always ran my r5 gt on super unleaded, will i therefore not really notice any diff putting the cheapo stuff in. its only standard boost and turbo

^ where did this come from
either i'm reading it wrong or by turbo they mean engine which still wouldn't make sense to me ? Just for that reason i'd not pay too much attention to what it said

No, by turbo, they meant, errrm, TURBO! Saab (IIRC) tested that LRP crapola, and found it to "attack the turbo internals".

so any way back on topic, im better to spens the few more pennies and get super or should i fill up 4 star?. my local garage does 4star, but im worried the swap back to 4star will do more damage than good, and if they stop selling it then id have to go back to unleaded,
in a word, am i best with super or 4 star
We should all take advice from the nova or saxo owners club, they would no more than some.... yeah dont listen to facts, just make your own mind up people. problem being that what you think is actualy fiction.. Mart summed it up perfectly

Supposedly, as I've read on other threads, they do run better and smoother on leaded petrol, from peoples experience, so I would presume it won't cause any damage to your engine.. I'd be interested to try it, but nowhere near me sells 4 star :(

Christ o mighty walks among us.... just find a good bp and get ultimate.... it never let me down, optimax maybe but i seem to remember the word optimax and pinking.
You have not got much done to your engine CORRECT?
Stick 95 if you have to it wont kill it, i used to all the time when i was poor

How long have you been using these places with your 5 ?
My car didn't like using shell, but that was probably something completely different. Anyway I use tesco 99 now as its the nearest place that does 99ron and cheaper than shell which i don't want to use anymore

4 Star is a LOT more expensive than Super, as in about 50p per litre more expensive.

Forget Swine Flu, I think we have an outbreak of Thick5hititus!
when i had the 205 xs (carbed 1.4) i found shell optimax used to cause it no end of problems, i blamed it all on the additives in the fuel but im not sure to this day. Used to get poor running and very low mpg.
Such a waste of bandwidth... how the smeg is this going on still..... it should have ended at marts first post...:cry:

And you can't spell so get over yourself.
I was thinking pre ignition, not post, so the unburnt crappola damages the exhaust side of the turbo, that makes sense.
I didn't kno where that was quoted from hence why I asked, no need to be rude

can anyone help my 5 cut out, and wont start just backfire's when i turn it over!!!
ive only had the car a week i usally use hi octain fuel in but they were all out, so i used standard unleaded, could this be why?
NO, the prob lies else where, either to much fuel getting in or not enough, god im tired and mashed:scratch:
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
damm more money to chuck at the car then just seemed strange i never had this problem before untill 10 mins after i fueld up
did you put correct fuel in lol, clean the carb with some carb cleaner, might be muck in the jet.
was it very very low on fuel when you filled up? might of sucked some **** up
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
i used standard unleaded instead of the v+ i usally use, i will give the carb cleaner a try!, but tbh dont hold much hope car was running fine till it cut out, had just under a quater of a tank
could it be possable for normal unleaded to cause problems like this?
like i said no.....
unless you have fiddled with certain ignition things ;)
damm damm damm, thanks jrp, looks like it will have to go to a garage get it looked at ffs, was ment to buying my carbon fibre buckets 2morrow ;(

I run 20psi boost and I always put in Shell V-Power (RON98 equivalent in Holland and 100 in Germany) PLUS a splash of lead replacement (Shell Millenium). The beast seems to like it... ;)
