I'm looking at upping the power on my 5, I'm after about 170-180bhp. I've currently got a KTR180 turbo and I was going to use a piper 270 cam. This idea seems to be pointless as the KTR180 is not man enough for such a camshaft. So I'm only planning on running 16psi and standard fueling as I need to keep it as reliable as possible.

Is a T25 hybrid and a hotter cam the only way to acheive a reliable 170bhp? I'm also looking for a set up with minimal lag as need good acceleration as I exit corners. Or whats the maximum power increase I could expect keeping it with a standard cam and the KTR180? I'm also lightening the flywheel.

Im not sure what the ktr180 relates to in normal terms as in t2 or t25.

But used to have a car with a 270 cam and a t2/t25 and it could have been a very quick car.... had it not blown up, sat on my drive for a year, then the loom went on fire..... not forgetting 3 MOT's later it worked then i sold it.

270 t2/t25... should do the trick, as its a track car ;) no doubt people will say im talking out my bum bum

Well I'm no turbo expert, but they reckon it's got a T25 compressor wheel, and the rest is standard T2? Hmmm I'm sure someone will set me straight soon enough. Btw this turbo was not purchased from K tec. so I'm only going on the info provided by the person I bought it from about 3 years ago.

Talk to some of the cup car owning people hub, see what they have done to their slags to make them quicker if anything ;)

The Piper 270 will be fine with even the smallest of turbos, but the question of whether it's worth your hard earned cash is another one.

For quick and not laggy car I wouldn't go anything bigger than T25/T2 hybrid. Do not use 270 cam since you will notice almost nothing even with vernier and proper timing ;)

So to summerise, If I stick to the small ktr180 I will have lag free power (160bhp??), and the piper 270 is nigh on OE so it's not worth the money? If I want any more power then a T25/T25 is the only way plus a hotter cam piper 280, allthough it will be laggy and more expensive...

Keep that KTR180 which is AFAIK some kind of T2/T25 hybrid (bored out compressor housing for bigger wheel) and go for Piper 285 with vernier and you will easely reach aimed HP figure.

I have a Piper 270 and a turbo of similar spec to the KTR 180. I run 18psi, day in/day out. Been on the rollers once ... 179bhp and 200lb/ft. As far as I know, the general concensus that day was for an "accurate" rolling road, so no Max Power-esque readings :)

Oh ... but I do have some alloy bits that probably added another 30bhp ;)

Those KTR180 turdbo's are only a T2, they use the larger trim Land Rover T2 compressor wheel.

As I mentioned in a recent thread about this, you can squeeze 170-180hp out of the o.e T2 running it at 17/18psi, and you'll likewise achieve that power figure with the ktr180 in situ at similar boost levels. Difference being is that there'll be slightly less lag with the o.e blower in situ.

Yeah I get what you're saying mart, but if I turn the boost up to 18psi to achieve that figure (170hp) then i'll have to start messing with the carb? so will it affect the reliability of both the T2 turbo and the engine, bearing in mind i'm going to thrash it all of the time? whats the best compromise?

But to get that power figure regardless, you're gonna have to tweak the fuelling as you'll be running a similar boost level on the ktr180 to achieve 170-180hp.

The o.e T2 will be reliable if you keep boost levels under 18psi.

Without wishing to sound offensive, but what's special/magical about having to run 170-180hp anyway?

For a bit of reference, my old raider, Trusty, and T-cup all ran 1bar boost on track, and that was plenty, trust :)
